Now available for auction is this 1995 Porsche 993 Carrera 4 Coupe finished in Black over a Classic Grey partial leather interior.  This 1995 example was sold new from Rietzl Porsche Audi of Norwell, Massachusetts, and has had only one registered owner since.  Factory equipment includes an 8-way electrically operated driver’s seat, cruise control, a sunroof, and 6-speed manual transmission sending power to all four wheels.  Showing approximately 79k miles on the odometer, this 993 Carrera 4 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of South Carolina.

This 993 comes finished in Black (L741) and rides on 17” Cup 2 wheels fitted with “Carrera 4” logo center caps and Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires.  Designed by Tony Hatter, the 993 differs from its predecessor with rounder front and rear ends, a larger retractable rear spoiler, broader wheel arches, and flatter front fenders with new ellipsoid headlights.  The Carrera 4 can be identified by its Titanium-color brake calipers and rear model designation.  A comprehensive two-day paint correction process was recently completed and the seller reports some minor imperfections in the finish including a few stone chips on the hood.  Detailed images are provided in the galley along with a clean CARFAX report.

Inside, this 993 sports a Classic Grey (TT) partial leather interior with an 8-way power-operated driver’s seat, sunroof, cruise control, an Eclipse stereo, and vintage K40 radar detector system.  Some wear is depicted on the shift knob and driver seat bolsters, and the seller reports all gauges and accessories to be fully functional.  The factory specifications label on the underside of the hood lists the following equipment codes:

  • 437 – 8-Way Electrical Seat, Left
  • 454 – Cruise Control
  • 650 – Sunroof
  • 694 – CD-Radio Alpine

The 993 carried over the air-cooled 3.6L flat-six engine from its predecessor, with updates including lighter connecting rods and pistons, larger valves and intake passages, a new mass airflow meter, and a dual-flow exhaust system.  As much as 272 HP and 243 lb.-ft of torque are sent to all four wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission, while stopping power is handled by fixed 4-piston aluminum brake calipers paired with ventilated and cross-drilled rotors front and rear. Images of the undercarriage are provided in the gallery and the seller has supplied an invoice for a recent service including a new distributor belt, motor mounts, spark plugs, and brake fluid flush.

This sale will include a set of two keys, the original owner's manuals, sales literature, wheel lock key, spare tire, jack, touchup paint, and a clean title. Any ideal choice for any air-cooled driving enthusiast, this 6-speed 993 Carrera 4 is just waiting to be enjoyed.

This is a fair price for what is pretty much a drivers car rather than a collectible investment. i just missed it as was working and was within what i expected for this with lots of questions in the history and lack of information. At the end its still a 993 so i think the winner is LUCKY

4 videos, 190 pictures, a Carfax, and paint readings.
Not to mention all the days you had to ask your questions.
Your attempt to sabotage the auction is clear.
You’re probably going to use another account to bid.

If you want the big dollars you have to paint the complete picture and leave no doubt.

  • CartBeforeHorse (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

Hi trident, you said you were leaving.
    Good luck to you.
The rest of us are trying to conduct commerce.
    Thanks

  • Trident1 2 years, 11 monthsago

I just tuned back in . Who puts partial paint meter readings up??

  • CartBeforeHorse (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

It’s not as odd as waiting until the last few minutes to attempt to sabotage an auction. But I doubt you’ll be successful.

  • Trident1 2 years, 11 monthsago

It’s just a little odd that there are no maintenance records on a car with few owners and mention about it being collector - owned . The paint meter readings help but not real sure where they are taken and which areas are omitted . It’s typical of these cars to be original here and resprayed there. This combined with the 8 years with only 200 miles and no compression / leak down numbers make it difficult for me to bid with confidence . Appears to be a nice one but toomuch of a leap of faith for me . Good luck everybody !

  • CartBeforeHorse (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

As our clock winds down please check out the driving video, scan through the photo gallery one more time, and check out those paint meter readings. Then follow your heart.
These cars are still on a growing valuation curve and you have an opportunity to protect some cash from inflation and have an amazing time in the process.
    Good Luck Bidders!

Unfortunately I have to leave and will not be around for the final charge. I will submit my highest bid. For those of you making small increments to see how high I will go, you're on your own. I like this car and would be proud to win. If not, I will keep looking. Good luck.

I hope you won’t make the wrong conclusion and end up missing a great car. I cannot tell you if the paint is single stage or clearcoat. It seems from the PCA link I posted it’s not an easy question to answer for them either.

The owner of the car has sent some paint meter readings that I think will satisfy your concerns.

Please look at the recently posted paint meter readings and also look at the Carfax.

Thanks for your continued interest and thanks bidders.

  • rnak (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

I can only conclude that your car has had an accident or paint work since you have not answered my question.

  • CartBeforeHorse (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

I’m not sure that I can answer that definitively. Unfortunately I was not there when they did the paint correction. I do not know if there was transfer to the foam pads.
    Please see this article
    https://www.pca.org/tech/single-stage-paint

  • rnak (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

Thanks, Seller. I had almost the identical car in red and it was single stage. Are you sure your car has clear coat? I am asking these questions in lieu of paint meter readings. Equally important, I would like to know if the car has had any paint or body work of any type. I would appreciate these details.

  • CartBeforeHorse (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

Thanks for the question. Paint correction was done to remove the swirl marks in the clearcoat. They did a phenomenal job.
What remains is some paint chips in the hood. These can be seen if you zoom in on pic 48.
I believe the buyer could pursue some additional paint correction in the way of filling these chips.

  • cgfen (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

I like the grey interior. Never understood why "double or "triple" black was all that desirable.

  • rnak (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

Hi seller, could you please tell me more about the paint on the car? Has there been any paintwork or accidents in its history? After the paint correction are there any remaining cosmetic damage or issues? Scratches, dents, swirls, blemishes etc. Has the paint worn thin anywhere? Not sure if the car is single stage paint but it is common for the primer to start showing through. I know this was an issue on 930 models.

Good day to all. We are covered in snow here in Greenville, SC.
According to Stuttcars.com Alpine is the correct description for that code.
Just wanted to wish all bidders the best of luck. We are still a good bit from the reserve but based on the questions I’ve been asked I think this auction has the energy to get there. I think this 993 will go to a new owner today.
    Best of luck bidders!

    Code 694 alpine radio…..

Never seen that code. Don’t think it exists. Porsche never installed Alpine radios.

Car looks wonderful. Watching intently. Car similar to mine minus the X51 package and Japanese deliver.

Good luck with sale. These good examples are getting harder to find.

    Hello all.
PCar has replaced the 4th pic with a clean engine bay pic.
They also added some new close ups of the dash top to the end of the picture gallery.
    Thanks!

  • CartBeforeHorse (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

It’s fine to ask the question however it’s just speculation that the car was ever “stored”.

I think it’s more likely the car was hovering just below 80K miles during a period of significant financial appreciation in 993s and was therefore (sadly) sparingly used. I believe the previous owner was waiting to see what would happen in this market and while it’s sad he didn’t enjoy the car his speculation likely paid off when he sold the car.

I’ve sold other cars for the current owner of this 993 that he only drove less than 200 miles in 4 years. It’s a rather common event for people who have collections exceeding 20 cars.

Of course, I’m speculating too which is all we can do.

    What we know is:

    1. The car ran, stopped, steered like a scalded beast up and down the mountain….demonstrated in the driving video. No signs of any mechanical malfunction…just glorious Porsche witchcraft .

    2. The car is not leaking as would be the primary concern from a period of storage with absolutely no use.

  • 1969911Ss (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

anyone have any experience with maintenance on one of these once they start be driven again after a long storage?

  • CartBeforeHorse (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

Hello all. The 993 owner took offense to my criticism of his engine bay filth and he has done a little cleanup. I’ve sent the photos and a few more interior photos to PCar for posting.
It occurred to me to point out however that the engine bay was dirty but the underside is free of oil deposits. I think this helps to answer the question about potential leaks. The car was in my possession for 2 days and didn’t leave a trace of oil here.
    Thanks bidders!

  • CartBeforeHorse (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

I believe that most people who would own a car like this understand that some regular use is important. The car is available for a pre purchase inspection if you would like to have one done. Thank you.

  • Trident1 2 years, 11 monthsago

Thanks for the description. How it was managed during those 8 years of no use is important . Is the engine wet in any areas? Any oil leakage? Seals drying out is typical of this history. Providing compression and leakdown numbers would come back to you exponentially in bidder confidence . Any chance of getting that done ? Thanks!

  • CartBeforeHorse (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

Thanks for the compliment Dom. Not a writer but I have a deep love for these cars that started at 8 years old when I walked past my first 356. The admiration has never left me.

Probably no more than a few months. The owner frequently buys, enjoys for a bit, and then moves to the next shiny thing. I’m trying to get him to stop buying 930s. He may need professional help.

  • DonN (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

How long has the current owner owned the car ? Thanks

  • CartBeforeHorse (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

These cars often end up in the hands of collectors with large numbers of cars. That is the case currently. The gentleman who owns this car now has several vehicles that are rarely driven. I do agree that the engine compartment could use a good detailing. Thanks.

  • Trident1 2 years, 11 monthsago

The Carfax shows nearly identical mileage in 2014 . Only 200 or so miles in 8 years ? Can you tell us about that history ? May explain an unusual looking engine compartment condition

Slaps Roof “They don’t make ‘em like this anymore”
Nothing could be closer to the truth.
As I drove this car back to its storage location a light drizzle started that turned into a heavy rain. As the awesome double wipers cleared my view, I went from being mad about the detailing job getting wet to realizing I was in a continent crossing, all wheel drive, completely comfortable, completely stable, real aircooled Porsche that also reaches back into history to connect its technology with my 356 (which incidentally I would have been terrified to be driving in the same rain). The 993 is the ultimate iteration of what an air cooled Porsche can be and can do. New enough to make any journey you put before it but old enough to have real and unmatched German quality inside and out. Much was lost in the German car industry just a few years later.
This is where it’s at. Reserve your edition soon! How about now!?
