Up for auction is this 1994 Porsche 968 Cabriolet finished in Black over a Cashmere Beige partial leather interior. Starting life as a coupe, all open-top 968s were converted into cabriolets by ASC of Heilbronn, Germany, before returning to the Porsche factory at Stuttgart for final assembly alongside the 911 and 928. One of just over 2,000 Cabriolets produced for North America in total, this 6-speed 1994 example was acquired by its current owner out of Texas in 2018 and has since undergone substantial service including replacements of the timing belt, water pump, alternator, and A/C compressor along with new paint, refurbished wheels, a new cabriolet top, and rebuilt gearbox.
This Cabriolet is one of 432 North American examples to have come factory painted in Black (A1) and was completely refinished in its original color in 2020. The factory 16” C2 5-spoke wheels come fitted with colored Porsche center crests and BF Goodrich tires. The wheels have been refinished and the cabriolet top was replaced in 2019. Some slight imperfections are noted in the finish and the seller reports the cabriolet top may only be operated manually at this time. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
The Cashmere Beige partial leather interior has been refreshed with reupholstered door panels and fitted with a set of black power-operated seats. The A/C compressor was recently replaced and the tachometer has been upgraded with new gears and LED lights. The upper passenger door window seal has begun to separate, and the seller reports the odometer is currently nonfunctional. Some other cosmetic damages are depicted throughout the cabin.
The 3.0L inline four-cylinder engine features Porsche’s Variocam variable valve timing system and produces as much as 236 HP and 225 lb.-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels by way of a 6-speed manual transaxle while stopping power comes from fixed 4-piston brakes paired with ventilated rotors at each corner. The owner consulted the specialists at Vertex Auto upon their purchase of the car in 2018 and subsequently carried out recommended service including replacement of the water pump, timing belt, rollers, and alternator. The gearbox was also recently completely rebuilt at a cost of over $6k. The seller reports occasional dips in the power steering fluid level and notes the pump may be due for replacement soon.
This sale will include a clean title. For any driver in search of a vintage transaxle Porsche, this 6-speed 968 Cabriolet offers an excellent value.
