Introduced in 1992, the third generation of the Mazda RX-7 (FD3S) represented a significant departure from its predecessor with a modernized design and increased performance capabilities. Powered by a unique rotary engine, this example is said to have been modified to R2 specification by the specialists at Peter Ferrell Supercars including lightweight components along with engine, suspension, & brake upgrades. Featuring a 5-speed manual transmission and finished in red over black upholstery, this RX-7 has undergone extensive service in 2022 and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Ohio with just over 39k miles on the odometer.
The FD3S is characterized by sleek and curvaceous body lines featuring pop-up headlights, a wide front grille with large air intakes, side air vents, aerodynamic mirrors, flush-mounted door handles, and a rear spoiler. This example comes finished in red and rides on aftermarket 17” SRR Performance-branded wheels dressed in Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 tires that were mounted in 2022 within the last 200 miles. The seller adds that this example has been modified to lightweight specification as in the R2 variant, a PFS fiberglass lip has been fitted, and the headlight covers have recently been replaced. Some areas of paintwork were performed under previous ownership and some paint imperfections dings are noted. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
The cabin presents black microsuede-upholstered bucket seats with a matching dashboard, center console, door panels, and carpets. Amenities include power windows, mirrors, and door locks, along with metal floor pedals, RX-7-branded door sills, and a Pioneer Premier radio with a CD changer. The seller adds that a boost gauge has been mounted ahead of the driver’s seat and an aftermarket sound system has been fitted. The gauge cluster is said to have been restored in 2022 including electronics cleaned along with necessary replacements by RXclusterworx as part of an extensive service, and the radio display is slightly dim. The seller also notes the airbag warning light appears intermittently.
The high-revving 1.3-liter 13B-REW Wankel rotary engine features twin sequential turbochargers for an output of 255 HP and 217 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven through a 5-speed manual transmission and a Torsen limited-slip differential. Performance is said to have been fully upgraded by the specialists at Peter Ferrell Supercars beginning in 1999 including increased engine output as well as modified suspension and brakes. The seller also states that a thorough fuel system service was carried out in 2022 including a new fuel tank, injectors, pickups, diffusers, and pumps. This service is also said to include a battery replacement, vacuum lines serviced, fluids changed, and brake fluid flushed. The seller recommends charging the air conditioning system.
This sale will include a clean title and some factory parts as shown in the gallery.
The seller would like you to know: “In the 1980-90s Peter Ferrell Supercars was at the forefront of the RX-7 performance competing against Stillen, Lingenfelter, Callaway, and other super tuners. They competed in many super tuner challenges with Car and Driver, Motortrend, and other publications. PFS produced race cars and performance street cars. One of 13,879 Mazda-produced FD RX-7s that were brought to the US, this car is a piece of automotive history with its factory Wankel design rotary engine.”

@RJ80 You are very correct and is being addressed by PCar. That was a miss on both parts as not corrected from the a type change. This is not a R1 or R2, it has the desirable seats and the rear spoiler. Thank you.
The seller is apparently confused about the R1 to R2 "upgrade." The R1 package was only available for '93 model year, this is a '94 which was the introduction of the R2 package. If I remember correctly, the only real difference was a more compliant spring/damper package, since there were complaints about the R1 being too firm for real US roads. By now, the suspension has been replaced with Konis and PF springs, so the original R2 suspension parts are long gone. R1 cars are generally more valuable these days than R2.
Other R1/R2 shared items were no sunroof, cloth seats, rear spoiler, front air dam lip (replaced with PF bumper on this car), extra radiator for oil cooling. Available colors were red, yellow and black.
