To celebrate 30 years of the Ford Mustang in 1994, the SVT Cobra Convertible was chosen as the official pace car of the 78th Indianapolis 500 race. A limited run of 1,000 replica cars was offered for sale, finished in Rio Red over a Saddle leather interior. These special editions feature Indy 500 logos, “Official Pace Car” decals, 17” cast aluminum wheels, and a 5-speed manual transmission with a Traction-Lok limited-slip differential. This example was acquired by the seller from its original owner and is now being offered for auction out of Pennsylvania with only 30 miles showing on the odometer.
The Indy Pace Car edition comes finished in Rio Red Tinted Clearcoat (E8) with a power-operated Saddle convertible top as well as an Indy 500 badge on the trunk lid and replica “Official Pace Car” graphics on each side. Other equipment includes a body-colored rear spoiler, Cobra fender badges, side air vents, dual exhaust pipes, front fog lights, Cobra-branded front brake calipers, and cast aluminum 17” five-spoke wheels dressed in original Goodyear tires. The seller notes very minor cosmetic imperfections including a small paint chip on the driver’s door and a mark on the driver’s side rear wheel.
The cabin features Saddle leather seats with Indy 500 winged tire logos embordered on the backrests. Accessories include a Cobra-branded four-spoke steering wheel, air conditioning, power windows and mirrors, and a Mach 460 AM/FM cassette stereo. The seller describes the interior to be in excellent condition with all gauges and accessories remaining fully functional.
This Mustang is equipped with a 302ci small block “5.0” Cobra V8 engine with electronic fuel injection and GT40 cylinder heads. Up to 240 HP and 285 lb.-ft of torque is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission and a Traction-Lok limited-slip differential. The SVT Cobra receives special chassis tuning compared to the standard Ford Mustang as well as upgraded brakes with larger 13” vented front discs, 11.65” rear discs, dual-piston rear calipers, and ABS as standard.
