We are pleased to offer this 1994 BMW E36 M3 finished in Avus Blue Metallic over an Anthracite M-Cloth interior.  In 1992, BMW launched the second generation of its M3 high-performance 3-Series with a new body style, chassis, and 6-cylinder S50 engine which offered an increase of nearly 100 HP over the original M3. This example was built in January of 1994 at the 3-Series production facility in Regensburg, Germany, and was delivered new to its original owner in Japan where it resided up until 2019 before being imported to the United States. Modifications under prior ownership include ARC adjustable coilovers, front and rear Racing Dynamics anti-roll bars, a Supersprint exhaust system, AC Schnitzer pedals, and wheel spacers. Acquired by the current owner out of North Carolina in September of 2021, this European-spec E36 M3 is now being offered for auction with approximately 127k kilometers (79k miles) showing on the odometer.

This M3 comes finished in Avus Blue Metallic (276) paint with black Shadowline trim. While offered only for the 1995 model year in the United States, Avus Blue Metallic was available on European models from 1992-1996. Exterior details include pop-out quarter windows, Euro-spec glass headlights, front and rear fog lamps, and a power-operated sunroof. The M3 can be differentiated from a standard 3-Series by its aggressive lower front air dam, sculpted rockers, rounded aero mirrors, and lower rear diffuser with larger diameter exhaust tips. An M3 Lightweight replica rear wing has been mounted to the trunk lid. The seller reports some minor dents on the driver’s side door and quarter panel, scratched trim on both sides of the rear bumper, and a small rock chip on the passenger side headlight. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. The original 17” BMW Style 22 DS1 wheels wear BMW Motorsport engravings and Riken tires showing date codes from 2019.

The interior is trimmed in rare Anthracite cloth “M-Rain” fabric, with power-adjustable Vader sport seating featuring cloth inserts, power-retractable thigh supports, and suede side bolsters. Other details include a leather-wrapped M-Sport steering wheel with M tri-color stitching, M3-branded door sills, and an M-badged instrument cluster with a 280 KM/H speedometer and 8k-RPM tachometer. The driver is supplied with an onboard trip computer, power windows, central locking, cruise control, automatic climate control, and a BMW Business cassette stereo. The aftermarket AC Schnitzer pedal set was fitted by a prior owner. The seller describes two small tears in the carpet in the rear floorboard, separation at the top of the passenger side A-pillar, and shrinking of both interior door pockets. The passenger-side auto window down function does not work when the door is open, and some pixels are burnt out on the onboard computer display. The 6-digit digital odometer reads 127,426 km, but due to a registration error in 2020, the mileage was not recorded in kilometers and registered as inconsistency on the CARFAX report.

This Euro-spec M3 is powered by a 3.0L straight-six S50 engine which produces up to 286 HP and 236 lb.-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. The 3.0L Euro S50 produces over 40 HP more than its U.S. counterpart thanks to individual throttle bodies, continuously-variable VANOS valve timing, heavy-duty valve springs, and higher compression ratios.  An upgraded Supersprint exhaust has been installed along with ARC coilovers and Racing Dynamics anti-roll bars for the suspension. Upon delivery to the United States, this E36 M3 was serviced by German Car Specialists of Bellevue, Washington, including a new air intake hose and power steering lines.  An oil change was completed more recently in September of 2021 along with the replacement of a fuel pump gasket.

This sale will include a clean North Carolina title. Sporting a robust European-spec engine, tasteful period upgrades, and one of the rarest factory colors on U.S. roads, this Japanese market 1994 example could very well be the E36 M3 you've been waiting for.

@Robert.FU.Hastings Agreed. It’s an undervalued car and for $34k this was a great deal for the buyer. With the M rain seats, this is a $50k car.

  • Robert.FU.Hastings (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Tom44 I'm with you. I think E36 is currently undervalued/underappreciated even though the prices have been on the rise. It may just be you and me, but E36>E46 due to the totally neutral and unflappable chassis. E36 with a euro S50 or S54 is sublime!

  • jimmy9980 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Tom44 I got a good deal on my e46 M3 but I bought it back in March 2020 during covid days everything was cheap. My e36 I feel like I over paid but for the shape and milage it was the best I could find in this crazy market.

  • Zfirst1 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Whoa….I went to bid again with my personal maximum which is much less than the current $27k. I’m out.

I had a 1993 for a year as my daily when living in Europe and these are an absolute blast with the S50 motor. Enjoy the M3!

  • Bbonfanti (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Is the car currently registered in NC?

  • mdriver61 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@pu911rsr I just have US records. I do have the importation papers though.

  • pu911rsr (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

How much of the ownership history do you have documentation for. US history will be on carfax, any documentation of Japanese and Canadian ownership history.
    Thanks,
    Phil

@butlejm5 Motorsport Connections in Winston Salem.

  • mdriver61 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Zfirst1 The shocks hold great and are in good health. No there's no weird smells. Just that great late 80s early 90s bmw smell.

  • butlejm5 2 years, 10 monthsago

Nice E36! Who did you fuel pump gasket change and oil change a few months back?

  • Zfirst1 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Also, any unusual odors (e.g. smoke or mildew)?

  • Zfirst1 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@seller. How is the condition of the trunk shocks? Do they hold open ok with that massive wing mounted?

  • racemor (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Correction: I guess I should have said ROW, not so much Euro, since it's a Japanese market car.

  • racemor (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Love these Euros, and local to me. Wish I'd seen the listing before today, I would have come to check it out.

@ralienskier Yes it was optioned from the factory that way. All original.

  • ralienskier (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Was the Anthracite cloth “M-Rain” fabric optioned with the vehicle from factory? All original?

  • mdriver61 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Zfirst1 No I don’t have either. The screwdriver is one of the few missing tools from the toolkit. The suspension was installed by a previous owner so I never got the special tool.

  • Zfirst1 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@seller. Do you still have the special tool for the adjustable suspension? How about the (always) missing screwdriver for the factory toolkit?

@amirposh the service records I have just go back to when it was imported and it looks like just power steering lines were replaced. The cooling systems on these euro spec m3s are a lot more reliable than the US version so I’ve had no issue there. From what research I’ve done, the shims on these s50b30s are very similar to the s14 and s38. So I imagine the shim adjustment would be similar to those engines. The engine feels strong and pulls hard. I’ve had no issue with it burning oil which is surprising considering it’s a bmw. I’m selling because my wife and I bought another vehicle and I no longer have the space to store it or the time to drive it.

  • amirposh (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

it appears you’ve owned the car for only 8 months, may i ask why you’re selling so soon

  • amirposh (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

few questions for you: if any, what other services have been done to it? any cooling components replaced? do these engines need the valve train shims adjusted like the s54? how’s the engine feel? does it burn any abnormal amount of oil?

  • Socaldriver 2 years, 10 monthsago

@mdriver61 Thank you for the reply. I will research on this. GLWA!

  • mdriver61 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Socaldriver the only modification to the car that would effect anything like that would be the Supersprint exhaust, but even then I doubt it. The car passes a NC inspection no issue. I don’t know about California, but I know NC and other are states are pretty lenient of cars +25 years old.

  • Socaldriver 2 years, 10 monthsago

    Hi,

    Beautiful car!

Are there any modifications on the car that would not pass CA SMOG. I live in Southern California and want to make sure this would pass CA smog check before bidding.
