Based on the E34 5-Series sedan platform, the second-generation BMW M5 features an S38 inline-six paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. This 1993 example is finished in Schwarz II over a Black Nappa leather interior and is equipped with dual-zone automatic climate control, an electric sunroof, power-adjustable front sport seats, self-leveling rear suspension, and 17” M System II wheels with “throwing star” covers. The S38 was completely rebuilt under the care of its previous long-term owner including a 3.7-liter displacement upgrade with a Weisco forged piston kit and a Mark D’Sylva EAT 93 octane performance chip. Benefitting from extensive refurbishment carried out in recent years, this M5 is now being offered for auction out of Illinois with approximately 92k miles showing on the odometer.
The M5 can be distinguished from a standard E34 5-Series by its aerodynamic front spoiler, mirrors, side skirts, and rear valence. This example is finished in Schwarz II and rides on three-piece forged aluminum 17” Style 20 M System II wheels with magnesium bolt-on “throwing star” covers. The car rides on 235/45 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires from late 2020. Other equipment includes fog lights, an M5 grille badge, a power sunroof, and a dual-tipped exhaust outlet. The lower front chin spoiler was repaired and painted in 2023. Some minor cosmetic imperfections are noted around the exterior including light scratches on the roof and cracks on the left front fog light and right rear taillight. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
The cabin is appointed with Black Nappa leather upholstery, dark wood trim, and M5-branded floor mats. Amenities include power-adjustable front sport seats with power leg bolsters, a four-spoke leather steering wheel, power windows and door locks, an onboard computer, cruise control, automatic climate control, and rear seat A/C vents. A Continental Bluetooth stereo has been installed along with a custom-fabricated cup holder. The headliner, sunroof cover, front overhead console, rear shelf, and inner pillars were replaced in May 2023. The seller adds that the driver’s airbag has been deactivated and the blower resistor, heater core, hazard light switch, and SRS airbag slip ring were replaced under prior ownership.
Power comes from an S38B36 engine with individual throttle bodies and dual overhead camshafts. It was bored to a 3.7-liter displacement under prior ownership and fitted with a Weisco forged piston kit and Mark D’Sylva EAT 93 octane performance chip. The engine rebuild included new bearings, gaskets, seals, ignition components, a new oil pump assembly, an oil sending unit, a crankshaft position sensor, a thermostat, a fuel pressure regulator, a fuel tank, a fuel pump, and fuel injectors. The catalytic converters have been removed from the exhaust. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Getrag 280/5 5-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. During the engine rebuild, the flywheel was machined and a new Sachs clutch kit was installed. Service in 2020 included new tie rods, front sway bar links, rear control arm links, brake rotors, and brake pads. In 2023, the car was serviced with a new harmonic balancer assembly and drive belt. An oil service was completed in September 2024 along with a pre-purchase inspection. The seller notes the right rear shock exhibits minor seepage.
This sale will include owner’s manuals, factory sales literature, a toolkit, a spare tire, a car cover, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “Greetings P-Car Market members. I'm a long-time car enthusiast who has been enjoying buying, fixing up, and selling European cars for the past 40 years. Recently I've started to use my knowledge and experience to help folks prepare, market, and sell their beloved classics. Everything I represent is hand-picked and thoroughly gone through to ensure that what you see is what you get. They're not always perfect, but I go out of my way to make sure that the buyer knows EXACTLY what they're getting. Through the constant interaction of the auction, and the very thorough and detailed NARRATED walk around and driving videos, I make sure that the experience is the next best thing to being there. It's how I would want to be shown a car that I'm interested in. This last US year M5 has been fastidiously maintained by this current enthusiast owner with an "open checkbook" approach. The subtle but potent modifications would cost close to double if done now if you could even locate the parts. I'm representing the car for a good friend from our local area car club and am intimately familiar with it. That will all come through as you watch the videos and follow along the thread. I'm looking forward to helping put this beautiful M car into the next caretaker's garage.”

Some questions are have come in about the serviceability of the motor with the Wiseco Piston kit installed. The serviceability is exactly the same as a stock motor. The seals and ancillary hardware are identical to a stock motor. As you can see by the BMW Dealer invoices when it was rebuilt, all stock parts available.
Another question about the HP / Torque increase with the mods. Our owner never had it dyno'd but it's noticeable. By the seat of the pants, it feels like 25-35 increase in both EASY. If it was plenty stock, it's more than plenty now.
@jbeinhor, Thanks for the bid.

With just under an hour to go, I'll recommend to folks to rewatch the videos so you can see just how well everything on this car works and how EASY it is to enjoy it. The easier a car is to just hop in and drive, the more often you'll find yourself actually using it. It doesn't get much easier to enjoy a classic than this.
Also, I just added a few more pictures showing how clean the bumpers, side aero, and wheels are. So, it'll look just as good sitting in your driveway or garage as it will when you fly past. And, the relatively recent, almost full tread, super sticky Michelins just have a few thousand miles on them so those will be good for years and miles to come. Check out the pictures and rewatch those videos.

@Bmwm5guy @Bmwm5guy, You're welcome, and Thanks for the repeat bids.
I can't stress enough how TURN KEY and ready to go this M5 is. As I mentioned earlier, it's been on SEVERAL out of town (200 mile) trips and performed FLAWLESSLY. For a 31 year old car, it's ridiculously modern with every creature comfort one could want. It has power everything, windows, locks, sunroof, seats, the works. The heat is hot heat, the A/C is ice cold. It's a joy to drive triple speeds on the highway as it's an autobahn car, but it's just as agile and happy to be driven around town with that silky smooth HAND BUILT straight 6. And, believe it or not, it gets impressive highway mileage so you can REALLY take it on a long trip and not have to stop every 2 hours for gas. People in the know take the E34 over the E39 all day long.
@ok.ivanzm, thank you for your repeat bids.

@AutofileClasssics thanks for replying. I went back and checked to confirm.
@jbeinhor @jbeinhor, Yes, I shared that with both of them and had them review it, even bounce it off a couple of their guys, before I followed up. We've had the video since Wednesday evening so I've been doing my homework. Their consensus is that full open, rest, full shut IN A FLUID MOTION WITHOUT HESITATION OR INTERRUPTION is what you look for to make sure that communication is working. Both were surprised that it did it twice in the video link you shared. And Eurocar even went as far as to say he didn't like the jerky motion of the operation of the you tube link. Just sharing what I was told and folks are welcome to reach out to either shop, both shops, or call their own trusted BMW service center. In either case, as previously stated, the car was just in recently for an oil service, PPI, and passed with flying colors. There's maybe 200 miles on the current oil so it's ready for its next road trip.
Also, I just added a few more "glam" shots of this beauty in front of our owner's home so check them out.

Thank you for providing the video -- that is interesting, I've always seen it do it twice as described in this helpful handout: https://www.m5board.com/attachments/e34-m5-intake-resonance-flap-pdf.972135/
@jbeinhor et all, Here is the link to the video of the "flap test" taken by our owner and his son. You will notice that it opens fully, rests, then closes fully. I was initially told that it's supposed to cycle twice, but after talking to 2 different master mechanics at 2 different local shops, that the 1 full and complete cycle is correct. I spoke to the owner of Eurocar Imports, and the owner of Luke G Workshop, both of whom confirmed this. Check out the link.

@jbeinhor @jbeinhor, Yes, we took a video the other evening and I'm coordinating with my P-Car rep to get it loaded. Please stand by.
Good Morning everyone, Happy Friday, and welcome to the last day of our auction. Hard to believe that it's been 7 days but the week has flown by. Thank you to everyone who's participating in the comments, questions, and bidding.
@ok.ivanzm, Thank you for your bid.
@jak123, Thanks for the bid and you're on top.
With just a few hours to go, I'll be adding a few more groupings of pictures but folks are welcome to chime in on what they'd like to see. To date, we've added pictures of all of the documentation, all interior and exterior lights working, showing the A/C blowing at a finger numbing 9 degrees, and some more great shots of the car out and about. So, let me reach into my bag and see what other great pictures we should look at.
Have a great morning everyone.

Oh you just answered, thanks! Please let me know about the flap!
Hi seller — any luck with the intake resonance flap test or oil pan gasket questions? I’m interested, but these both are important. Thank you!

@Bmwm5guy @Bmwm5guy, Hi there, A/C blows at sub freezing temps as can be seen in the pictures in the gallery to the right. Most of the way down, you'll see I'm holding an orange temp gun and it's blowing at 9 degrees!! And yes, it's been converted to R134a. Thanks for your question and check out the pictures in the gallery.
@jbeinhor @jbeinhor, Same, apologies for only seeing your question now. Yes, it's no longer leaking and the engine area is otherwise bone dry. The only remaining issues have been noted in the write up. Thank you for your question.
@purto86 @purto86, Not sure why I didn't see your question until now, so sorry for the delay. Yes, the engine has been completely rebuilt with Wiseco high performance piston set which is why it's now 3.7L. It was also completely resealed at that time so you will see all BMW parts on the invoices included in the gallery at the right. A new clutch set with flywheel re-machining was also done at that time all laid out in the invoices. Much work also done since the rebuild in the invoices. Please give those a look over and everything will be clear. Thank you for your question.
Hi I didn’t see where it was mentioned if the AC is in working order and has been converted. Can you confirm either way?

Good Afternoon, Happy Hump Day, and welcome to another full day of this beautiful E34 M5 auction
@purto86, Thank you for the bid.
Please enjoy further demonstration that everything on this Black Beauty of an M-Car works, and works well. Enjoy the pictures and have a great Wednesday.

Hi! I’m one of the records it notes that the oil pan was leaking — was that ever corrected? It’s a big job on these cars. I believe it was a 2023 record.
Thank you! I’ve owned many of these!
This is my dream car,and I hope I will be the one who will take care of it….
So the engine is rebuilt like I understand?

It just occurred to me that our below invoice tally does not include the interior refresh work. Thousands more went into this process to ensure that this M-Car looks as good as it performs. Please note that no expense or effort was spared in getting every part of this black beauty's interior looking like new. Most of the interior, as can be seen, had to come out to make sure that nothing was damaged and that everything fit back exactly as it should. And, the sourced OEM material ensures that every refurbished interior component looks exactly like it would have the day it left the factory. Please take some time to view the most recently added pictures of the exhaustive interior refresh. Enjoy.

Good Morning everyone, Happy Tuesday, and welcome to the 4rd full day of our auction of this stunning last run E34 M5. I hope everyone got through their Manic Monday ok, coasting through the work day if you worked, or enjoying the day off if that was the case. Whichever it was, we’re glad to have you here with us.
A few members have requested to view the engine refurbishment and service docs so that's what's most recently been added. You'll see everything from the machine shop work, all factory parts purchased from one of our local BMW dealers, the assembly and installation receipts, then finally the most recent "upkeep" and thorough sorting work done at area BMW / Porsche experts Luke G Workshop. In all, over $35k in receipts in transforming and sorting this subtle but potent "Brute in a fancy suit". I guess it's more of a tuxedo::--)))))
Enjoy the added pictures, have a great Tuesday, and stay tuned for much more to come.

@JohalE32 @JohalE32, You're welcome. I've just added another round of pictures of the engine compartment, viewing that amazing motor from every angle. Enjoy the pictures everyone and have a great evening.
@AutofileClasssics Thank you very much for the prompt reply. That makes a lot of sense

@JohalE32 @JohalE32, that is correct, the timing was such that our next service visit to perform the PPI, oil change, etc, including the SRS light, was after the video was shot. It was subsequently addressed and the rest of the videos were shot after the PPI visit.
The cats were removed under prior ownership and we don't have them.
To be clear, the engine currently in the car IS the original engine. We can only speculate that it needed some refreshing or resealing that the previous owner used as an excuse for a dream build.
Appreciate your questions.
In the first video at 4:18, it looks like there is a piece of tape or something covering the airbag warning light? Can you please confirm this? Any idea why the original engine was rebuilt? Are the original cats included? Thanks!
Good morning everyone, happy Monday, happy Columbus Day, and welcome to another full day of the auction. I hope folks generally had a relaxing weekend, and if your team was playing, whatever team that may be, that your team won.
For those of you lucky enough to be off today, thank you for spending some of your free time with us.
As I mentioned earlier, we have many more pictures just in summary of the car and it’s goodies, so we’re going to have to kick things into high gear to even come close to covering it all before we wrap up.
So, please view the gallery as the first round of pictures has just hit. I added pictures of the all original factory glass etchings, that afore-mentioned security sticker, and some exterior details in the form of the M specific door handles and badges.
Enjoy the pictures and more are on the way. Have a great Columbus Day everyone.

Good afternoon everyone, happy Sunday, and welcome to another full day of the auction. Some good observations and questions so far and some more answers on the way; everything that the a great platform and community should be about.
By now, hopefully folks are starting to get an idea of what we’re all looking at. A lot of time, care, energy, and certainly money has gone into what’s being presented.
The reality is, we are all here because we share a passion in the love of these mechanical works of art. It’s very easy to get wrapped up in aforementioned things like investment costs, overhead costs, return on investment, budget, and a bunch of other stuff that has been dragged into what should just be a hobby about enjoying, appreciating, and loving these machines.
It’s funny, I’m not that old, 54, and it wasn’t long ago that there were terms like “the family car “. And if a family had more than one car, they were pretty well off. The only people that had more than a couple of cars were Arab sheiks and princes, The queen of England, or The sultan of Brunei. And even at that, it was just a handful of folks on the planet. Now, we have guys like Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, heck, even “regular working stiffs” like Dave McNeil who are epic car collectors everywhere, with more that we've never heard of falling out of the sky seemingly every day.
Well, our current owner isn’t quite in that category, but he does have a few cars and has taken care of this car from day 1 like he was. There’s definitely something to be said for having just a few.
@sbeinhor et all, I talked to our owner today and he went out to test the alarm. Since we only have keys in hand, all he could do was lock and unlock the car using the door cylinder(s). When he does, everything locks, but the light in question on the rear console does nothing. We believe it's just a "dummy" that was installed at some point as a deterrent. There is still the factory "immobilizer" per the original stickers on the doors, but we're not inclined to test it by breaking into the car::--))))) Hope that helps.
Pictures of the factory stickers and others to come.
@pdmiller03 Thank you for the strong opening bid.
Have a great Sunday everyone.
Bid in the amount of $10,000
@jbeinhor @jbeinhor, sorry for the delay in answering, still trying to get used to the format. Some quick answers to your questions:
- Minimal play in the steering. You can see it's rock solid and dead straight in both driving videos where we approach Autobahn speeds. Check out the videos if you haven't already.
- 3 factory keys (shown in the gallery) but no remotes transferred with the car.
- All interior door panels are in excellent condition and thoroughly secured. Again, watch the walk around video to see me open and close all doors multiple times with a beautiful rattle-free vault-like note as they shut, even from inside.
- Yes, the "little red light" has been on the rear console since acquisition. I'll inquire about an alarm with the owner, but having crawled all over the engine compartment, I don't believe there's any siren. Whatever alarm was installed may have been removed when the extensive engine work was carried out.
- No paint meter readings as I have no paint meter. We believe it's all original by look and feel and by the clean accident free Carfax report.
- Not familiar with the intake resonator "flap test" but will gladly look into it and get back to you.
Thanks for the questions.
Good Morning everyone, Happy Saturday, and welcome to the auction of this stellar E34 M5. Everything described and mentioned above is correct and 100% documented. There has been no part of this car that wasn't improved upon under current ownership. The exterior, interior, electronics, and mechanical (in spades) have all been carefully and thoughtfully finessed.
The only thing I'd like to add is that the car has been on several out of town trips since the videos were shot hence the slight discrepancy in mileage. Most recently, we attended Bimmerfest up near Whitewater Wisconsin 2 weeks ago. And, like the other trips, it performed FLAWLESSLY. So, if you didn't already gather by all of the recent work, this M-Car is sorted to the nine's and completely turn key.
I'll be adding more pictures as we go showing everything from the in process work on the interior and mechanical, to demonstrating the A/C blowing at an incredible low double digit Fahrenheit temps. So, please ask any and all questions, and this should be an enjoyable and informative 7 days. Have a great Saturday.
Sorry, do you also have paint meter readings? Regarding the alarm, you can see one was installed with the red led light on the back of the center console by the rear seats.
Good morning! A few questions: are you able to post a video of the “flap test” for the intake resonator? Also, is there any play in the steering? How many keeps do you have — and do they have the alarm for 1993? Also, how are the door panels? They are notorious for coming loose.
Thanks!
