Up for auction is this well sorted and unique Porsche 968 Cabriolet.  Equipped with a handful of bespoke upgrades, this 968 is set apart from the rest.  The car began life on the west coast, where it remained for many years before eventually finding its home in Virginia.  Since 2011, the car has been in the hands of a meticulous Porsche owner who has only driven a total of 6k miles since purchase. It is being auctioned in excellent condition with only 35,500 miles on the odometer.

The factory Midnight Blue paint is stated to be all original and in excellent condition. The seller notes that the vehicle has been consistently garaged during ownership. The photo gallery is a true testament to how well kept this vehicle has been throughout the years. Installed, are a set of upgraded euro style turn signal lights.

This 968 rides on a set of pristine factory 5-spoke wheels with colored Porsche crests.

This 968 highlights an incredibly unique and well cared for interior. The factory beige leather is perfectly complemented with luxurious ‘grain-matched' Macassar ebony that covers the dash, console, instrument cluster and shift knob. You will also find bespoke stitched leather on the map pocket, armrests, shift boot and console.  Additional upgrades include:

  • 996 steering wheel
  • JVC navigation system
  • Custom roll bar
  • Oil temperature gauge
  • Boost gauge

Power comes from a 3.0L 4-cylinder that is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. Thanks to the installation of a rare and reliable DR 1 SC supercharger and RS Barn cat-back exhaust, power is increased to approximately 290HP at the wheels. The seller states that all seals, belts, and rollers have recently been replaced. Additionally, service records will prove consistent maintenance performed on this 968 has over the past decade. The car is stated to be in excellent running condition.

The sale will include a clean Carfax, all books, tools, keys, and service records.

@hws408 Thanks for the note and the questions. I'll try to answer them.

    Does the shift knob rattle?

The shift knobs on the 944 and 968 are 8.4 ounces. They’re engineered to play a role as a harmonic dampener. Aftermarket knobs weigh much less. So ... they rattle like hell. I engineered this shift knob for zero resonant vibration – so it’s the only aftermarket 944 or 968 knob in existence that doesn't rattle. I accomplished this simply by molding the wood around the weighted core of the original factory knob and retaining the original factory rubber dampeners.

Where are the screws in the door panel map pockets? Did you glue them to the door?

No, I painted the screw heads the exact color of the map pockets. All of the interior mods can be removed with screws or just pop out [as with the original shift boot] for inspection, etc.

Did you remove the plastic ‘bubble’ that protects the instrument faces?

Yes, I sourced laser cut ‘decorative’ surrounds for the instruments in the cluster – 2 made of plastic, and 2 made of aluminum. With the cluster removed from the car, I sandwiched the 2 plastic surrounds to build up to the 1/8” needed to provide clearance for the instrument needles. Then I attached 3 pieces of clear Lexan [one for the center and 1 each for the 2 side instruments.] I then hand-bent, sandwiched and glued the 2 aluminum surrounds to fit the contour of the instrument faces. That done, I sent the aluminum-surround-sandwich out to the great veneer guy in Denver to match the veneer he had installed in the rest of the interior.

@LongRunner Thanks for the note. I think I described the wheels as 'factory' wheels, not specifically 'Cup' Wheels. They came on the car. I can personally certify that they are 'nice' wheels. But I'm afraid I'm not up to speed on the fine distinctions of the vast array of Porsche wheels. I welcome your additional wisdom.

Gorgeous car! I love the cold box incorporated into the supercharger.
I have a couple of questions about the interior:
Every aftermarket shift knob I’ve come across on a 944/968 rattles. Does this one?
Did you remove the plastic ‘bubble’ that protects the instrument faces?
Where are the screws in the door panel map pockets? Did you glue them to the door?

Beautiful Stellar Example, Just want you to note that those are not Factory Cup One Wheels as described, They are very close in resemblance though, had a set just like those on a 928 I just recently sold.Overall a great example, Best of luck with the sale,I hope it gets a Well Deserved High Bid.

A couple of people asked me offline to describe the supercharger. The DR1SC was developed by Bob Larson in California specifically for 968 road cars with stock engines, using premium fuel [not racing fuel] and peaking at 3800-4800 rpm instead of at 5000-6000 rpm as a supercharger would for a racing application. And it's California Air Resources Board [CARB] certified.
It came as a turnkey kit, including a tuned chip. Larson only made 30-some. His estimate is that only about 6 found a home on cabriolets.
For lots of great 3rd party information on the SC, check the 968 forum: http://www.968forums.com
