Produced between 1989 and 1991 as the most high-performance version of Porsche's 928 grand touring car yet, the 928 GT featured a more powerful 5.0-liter V8 than the standard 928 as well as a 5-speed manual transaxle paired with a variable PSD limited-slip differential. This 1991 example is one of only several hundred sold in the United States and comes finished in Midnight Blue Metallic over a Marine Blue leather interior. It came factory-equipped with optional supple leather seats, side protection moldings, an electric sunroof, and enhanced rear-seat air conditioning. It remained with its original owner in Illinois and was acquired by the seller in April 2022 after it had been sitting idle for several years. The perfect candidate for a restoration accompanied by thousands of dollars worth of new parts, this 928 GT is now being offered for auction as a project car out of Idaho with approximately 57k miles on the odometer.
This 928 GT is finished in Midnight Blue Metallic (L37W) and features optional body-color side protection moldings, an electric sunroof, pop-up headlamps, a rear window wiper, a roof-mounted antenna, dual exhaust tips, and a black polyurethane rear spoiler. It rides on polished 16” flat disc “manhole cover” wheels. The seller believes that the paint remains original and notes two dents are present in the rear as well as one small oxidation spot on the passenger door. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
The cabin features Midnight Blue (PG) leather upholstery with matching carpets and optional supple leather seats. Accessories include a leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel, power-adjustable front seats, power windows, automatic climate control with optional rear air vents, a central locking system, and a Blaupunkt AM/FM cassette radio. The seller notes some loose stitching on the steering wheel and some fading of the leather upholstery. All gauges are said to be fully functional.
The 928 GT is equipped with a 5.0-liter 32-valve V8 DOHC engine specially tuned from the factory to produce up to 326 HP and 317 lb.-ft of torque with a modified control unit and a more aggressive camshaft layout. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle and a variable PSD limited-slip differential. The seller indicates the car has not been started in several years and is accompanied by a host of new parts including a timing belt, water pump, a gasket kit, and tune-up kits for the fuel and ignition systems.
This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “You have a rare opportunity to acquire a low mileage beautiful GT that you can restore to your specification. This care will allow you to experience a crucial piece of Porsche history a bargain price that is sure to continue to appreciate.”

Well, I am making my estimate on the limited info gleaned by the pictures,
you could easily go into the 50Ks with a full on respray and interior refresh,
not to mention adding in HGs, half shafts, front and rear Lower control arm bushings and BJs.
But your right fixing one of these cars is not inexpensive, especially if your interested in long term reliability.
Bid in the amount of $24,200
Argh I wish you could edit comments on here. My comment below was a general statement, not wholly directed at @mrmerlin. He well knows what it takes to do these cars right.
@mrmerlin Agreed, and I think your estimate is at a minimum. I've done 3 of these (928 S4 or GT), and the LEAST I spent, parts and outside services alone (only one had any paintwork done), was $27k. The highest, well it was multiples of that. That said, this looks like a good candidate for such love. Just don't kid yourself that it will be cheap.
Bid in the amount of $23,928
Definitely needs all what @mrmerlin has said not accounting for any "gotchas" that could occur along the way.
Im going to WAG this machine as needing 18 K to 25K in parts to go through it, could be more or slightly less.
NOTE this estimate is for a back to front go through and based on the available pictures.
No labor is included in this estimate.
I see some parts like a water pump and assorted odds and ends are included.,
no mention of clutch condition, at the least new hydraulic system and clutch inspection.
a good chance the PSD system needs serviced , rebuild.
check for slave leaking into the transaxle, replace its seal.
The shocks are ready for replacement ,
I would go with Bilstiens or Boge Reds if there are any left.
AC system ready for a redo, not sure how deep you have to go here.
This estimate would also include a new carpet set .
I would change the color to Camel/ Cashmere,
this would give the interior a warm aura.
Now its too much blue.
Swap in door panel inserts with etched Pasha leather that matches the carpets.
Intake refresh, includes the cam covers , new coolant hoses, PS system lines, rebuilt rack, MMs and trans mounts, ignition wires and fuel lines, maybe dampers and FPR.
T belt and WP and oil pump rebuilt and new cam gears.
4 Tires, Zimmerman rotors, Hawk pads, SS lines and new MCs for brakes and clutch ,
and a new slave plus a new flex hose for the slave.
You will find out the cooling system condition when you remove the water pump.
could indicate need for new HGs. (not a definite here)maybe just a coolant flush.
Still its GT in a more rare color with low clock miles.
You will find out how pitted the cams are when the covers come off,
A good PDR and paint buff to keep the paint original should suffice for daily driver duty.
This would be a cool project for a DIY guy to fix and keep and drive.
It is at the tipping point for a full on restoration,
thus to keep it as a viable piece of operating machinery that can be used for long distance operations.

@Bilal928S4 There are no major scratches on the gauge cluster, I submitted 3 more pictures to Pcarmarket to upload that are close up of that area. The steering wheel leather needs to be re-stitched under the top of the wheel.
Additional content has been added to the gallery for this listing.
@Dozer I looked into getting a paint depth meter but it would takes several days to arrive and not in time to answer your question before the auction ends. The paint is all original and would buff up nice, however there are imperfections with paint and body as pictured.
@Dozer It has the origional Blaupunkt head unit, but missing the master volume knob, I never left the battery connected long enough to know if the clock works. The rear latch assembly parts are included, I assume it will function properly once installed.
Are those scratches on the cluster? Can you provide a close up picture of that area.
Bid in the amount of $9,200
Sorry, both sides
Any chance you know if the clock works? How about the hatch release from bit sides? Also, I can’t zoom in on my phone to see if it’s the original radio? Thanks.
Bid in the amount of $8,928
@porsdrvr95 the car was hand cranked and moves freely, as is stated in comments below. Please read all the previous comments. I simply didn’t start the project. There is no good reason the reserve will not be exceeded this is a wonderful car and an excellent opportunity for a serious collector/ enthusiast. Re: carfax report, the report confirms clean title no accidents, as a buyer I felt that was good information.
Can the car not be hand cranked to determine a solid engine. With this car being so rare a failed engine totally diminishes its value. How did the car change hands without any car fax data. I’m sure without knowledge of the engine status, the car mostly like not reach the reserve, in my opinion
@porsdrvr95 Thank you for your interest. I would perform a leak down test to evaluate motor in addition to oil analysis. I didn’t compression test because in doing so you risk breaking timing belt and causing valve damage, because the timing belt is very likely out-dated. If I had the time to do this project, the way I would approach this is full refresh of all systems pull motor inspect and reseal, etc. that way I would guarantee healthy engine. But winning bidder can determine how they’d like to approach it. One could put new fuel and crank it. It’s a rare engine, It’s really owners call. Car comes with all factory manuals with all diagrams and specs. This is a perfect opportunity for a Porsche GT lover to invest time and end up with a low mileage gem.
@Bilal928S4 ironically I’ve had two other 928’s and the both had an aluminum oxidation bubble on the passenger door both were California cars. The spot pictured is the only one on this GT.
Has the car been repainted? The rust bubble by the rear-view mirror is strange as that is an aluminum door.
Any other rust bubbles? Especially by the middle of the lower lip of the rear side window?
Thanks
I am extremely interested in this car. The Carfax shows little data, do you have any other information? Would a compression test be possible. It would give insight into potential engine issues
Bid in the amount of $7,928
@Dozer yes it is
Bid in the amount of $7,300
Is it possible to get paint meter readings?
Is all the paint original?
@YoBigT Thanks BigT, the trip to wyoming wouldn't be that bad if the roads aren't snow and ice covered. I know the professional car haulers are still moving vehicles though.
@BLH944 The electrics do function. There are two pictures of the gauge cluster with power on. There is a new battery for when its ready to run. I did notice that the driver power seat wasn't moving so the seat motor or fuse will need attention.
@jpiljan3878 The tires need replaced.
@Alraf @ jpiljan3878,
Your questions have already been answered by the seller.
Look at what he said in the comments section below.
What are the date codes on the tires?
Why has the engine not been turned over?
THanks Seller for being forthright with info. Do you know whether electronics, gauges, radio, windows, lights & signals etc all function? I presume nothing can be said about transmission, suspension, or any other driving functions... GLWTA!
Thanks for reply Jdell. Do you consider Wyoming "fairly close" to Boise?
Actually the part of Wyoming I'm in would be a substantial hump from Boise. But shipping is definitely a consideration. I'm going to stay engaged with this listing. Thanks for your reply.
Thanks for the replies @Jdell. I agree it is a car worth saving.
@URS6 I can only speak for how it was stored for the last three years I've had it, (garaged and dry). The car came from the midwest, but with low miles it seems it was not driven in the winter due to the lack of any serious corrosion. It's a 34 year old car and I don't have a full history on the car other than the carfax report, I believe the original owner was an entrepreneur from Ill. I don't know how the dents were made, but ironically I've had another 928 with dents in the same spot and theres a youtube video of a guy doing a paintless dent repair of the same type of dent on a 928. I was planning to pdr them as part of the restoration, but never got started. It will be rewarding to complete this project and have a super low mile GT in midnight metallic blue on the road once again.
@URS6 The photo of the underside are wet because I pressure washed it.
Also curious to know more about why and how it was stored. The pictures of the bottom of the car almost look like it was sitting in a puddle of water or some damp environment.
@Jdell, did you buy it from the first owner? Any more know about its history before you acquired it? The Carfax is just a bit light on information! For instance, any accidents? How did it get those dents on the rear quarters? Thanks. Very intriguing vehicle.
@jpiljan3878 This auction is for an extraordinarily rare opportunity to have a complete 928gt in a beautiful color combo with low miles, but requires mechanical reconditioning (aka. A project car) before any attempts to run the car are made. The car will come with several of the essential items such as water pump timing belt kit, ignition tune up kit, belts, etc.
@YoBigT cars are shipped at buyers cost. I can assist with coordinating etc. if you are fairly close to Boise ID. I may be able to deliver since I have an enclosed car carrier.
Will the car run?
Will the car engine turn over?
Seller pay shipping? Looks kinda clean, but doesn't run. Not like one can fly out and drive it home. Just asking. Please don't go off.
@stenakt trailer only
@Alraf It has not run in the last 3 years that I've had it, has been garage stored for the last three years. No attempts have been made to get it to running as previously stated. I never started the project, just started to assemble the new parts, which are included in the auction.
@Jdell thank you. You don’t need to send the part numbers. It would be great if you could let me know what attempts have been made to get the car running and what was found. Also how long has the car been a non-runner and how was it stored?
@ashmohaj I acquired all of the parts. I do not have any information on why the car stopped running, but being mechanically aware, I knew the car needed to be heavily serviced, since I was told it had sat for several years. I did not want to try and start the car because I assume that the timing belt is out of date, and did not want to risk it breaking t-belt and cause damage to valves, etc. I got as far as checking the oil, hand turning the motor to confirm it wasn't stuck and then started buying new parts, but never got to start digging into the car. Life has since gotten in the way, and I do not have time to perform the work and I am willing to allow another Porsche enthusiast an amazing opportunity to have this beautiful 928GT.
@Alraf I tried to reply with part numbers but the site thinks I am trying to exchange contact information. To summarize, over $3,500 in brand new uninstalled parts including full timing belt and water pump kit, all engine seals, tune-up kit, filters, belts etc. I check with the administrators of the site to see if they will allow the part numbers to be posted. Also included are quick reference specification booklet, the full volume of Porsche factory manuals, and other technical data worth $3k, all included. As well as two sets of wheels forged sport cups and D-90's
Does the engine crank? Has there been a compression check? These cars are prone to overheating and that may be why all the seals and gaskets are included from previous owner. Cylinder heads are expensive, that is why I ask the question as to compression test. Thank you
Bid in the amount of $6,900
PCM community welcome to the auction, I will do my best to answer all of your questions, bid with confidence this is solid car. The 928gt had factory port matched heads to allow this version to scream to redline. Own a rare piece of Porsche history.
Do you have a list of parts that comes with this car? Sounds like the previous owner(s) have attempted to get the car running. Can you let me know what attempts were made and what stopped them? When was the last time it ran and how was it stored since then?
@buccicone “manholes” we’re on s4’s. This car comes with its original D90’s and forged club sports so two sets of wheels.
@stenakt not started. Will be trailered. Motor is not frozen. Oil appears uncontaminated. I noticed that fuel pump relay was bad. ( new Bosch relay included). This could have been the reason for stop running. But because it has sat for an extended period, everything should be inspected and resealed. All seal and gaskets are included.
@jmorin D90’s are included.
I'm pretty sure the Club Sports were only on the 89s. These would be D90s.
Has the vehicle been started recently? Can it be driven away or is it a trailer only?
The wheels are 16” Club sport or D 90’s not manhole.
