One of 674 U.S. market examples produced for the model year, this 1991 Porsche 964 Turbo comes finished in Black over a Cashmere Beige interior. It was acquired by the owner in April 1993 with just over 4k miles and subsequently converted to BTR specifications by RUF in 1996 as part of a project in coordination with Alois Ruf himself. It began with the installation of a replacement Turbo 3.6 engine which received a 3.8-liter BTR upgrade kit. The car was tuned by RUF in Pfaffenhausen, Germany from March to June of 1998 and produces a claimed output of 425 HP. Showing just over 100k miles on the odometer, this BTR-modified 964 is now being offered for auction by its longtime owner out of Massachusetts.

This 964 is finished in Black with wide Turbo-specific bodywork and a distinctive Tea Tray rear spoiler. A RUF-style front spoiler was added under current ownership along with a set of BBS RSII wheels. New Michelin tires were installed earlier in 2022 within the last 500 miles. Signs of road-gear wear are described to be commensurate with the car’s age and mileage, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The Cashmere Beige interior has been fitted with a pair of custom Recaro electric seats in matching leather upholstery. In 1994, the rear seats were replaced by a custom fiberglass enclosure housing two 10” subwoofers controlled by a knob mounted on the dashboard. A new Porsche PCCM Bluetooth radio was installed in August of 2022 and the seller reports all gauges and accessories to be fully functional.

A replacement engine was sourced from a Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 and enlarged to a 3.8-liter displacement as part of the RUF BTR conversion in 1997. This upgrade package also included a RUF turbocharger, exhaust system, sports air filter, and fine-tuned electronics. The car was tuned by RUF in Pfaffenhausen, Germany from March to June of 1998 and produces an output of up to 425 HP and 450 lb.-ft of torque. RUF claims acceleration from 0-60 MPH takes place in as little as 2.9 seconds with a top speed of 205 MPH. An advanced RUF Electronic Clutch System (EKS) was also installed in 1997 but was later removed due to technical complications. A RUF 6th gear was added to the factory G50 transmission in 2006 along with the replacement of the clutch by Sports Imports of North Falmouth MA, overseen by an authorized RUF technician onsite. The turbocharger was replaced in 2019 at 98k miles and recent maintenance includes the replacement of the spark plugs, battery, and A/C service.

This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, service documents, and official correspondence from RUF.

Thanks - and sorry just came back, but Spartan was above where I was going to stop.

Sorry for delay in the asking of questions, the email reminder was late on this listing.

I dont know anything about RUF, but I do know a fair amount about 964s - i think new owner will love it. I will be on Cape for Thanksgiving maybe ill see it being loaded up off to Spartan's house

@spartansix I agree his questions were reasonable. For some reason, it took 3 times for my answers to show up. Hope this helps the rest of the bidders.

Your questions were reasonable (if a bit late) but I think you need to be realistic about this car... it's got 100k miles, it's from coastal MA, it's clearly got things that could be corrected if you know RUF and 964s. If it comes home, it's on a trailer...

    @LVMoore audipwr1

    Can you confirm

    1. There has been no paint work to the car? Very minor - all done before 1999.Dimple in hood, right front headlamp panel, one dent-doctor. Outside of the right rear bumper, and the rock guards as noted, nothing visible.
    2. To your knowledge there has never been an accident / or body repair work done to the car? NO
    3. Can you walk us through once more what documentation you have (service history, RUF records). Each summary sheet is backed up by work order receipts.
    4. What caused the spidered rear bumper? You happen to have sourced a replacement? I backed into the corner of a low brick wall at < 2mph
    5. Confirm heat / AC / all electrical (front & rear wipers, sunroof, windows, side mirrors, seat adjustments, etc) - all function. CONFIRMED
    6. Is that water ingress / rust on pic 78? NO! I just looked at it. It's a green discoloration of the rug.
    7. What service would it need to be picked up and driven 3k miles back west? None.

@LVMoore Hello everyone. We are just about at the end of this auction. I NOW KNOW THIS CAR WILL SELL TODAY.

I’m grateful for your comments and hope I’ve been responsive to your questions. I just posted picture #138, a recap of my driving history from 1993 through today.

Putting this history together brought back many beautiful memories and reminded me why I purchased this car - my fourth Porsche. It was to, within my means, raise the already high level of Porsche engineering to its pinnacle – a RUF BTR with a 3.8L motor, a six-speed EKS transmission (sigh), and an incredible, modern sound system. AND THEN DRIVE IT EVERY F***ING DAY.

At no time did I ever think of covering the car, putting it in a garage, driving it a couple of hundred miles a year, hoping that it would appreciate while growing old, and regretting every day I didn’t drive it.

I look forward to seeing the look on the new owner’s face on their first drive.

@82turboruf Hi, thank you for your question. I sold that engine in 1997, with about 35,000 miles on it. I remember being surprised at how fast it sold once I put it on one of the boards.

Regarding HP at the rear wheels, I have not put the car on a dyno. See the comment from CapeCod97 and two-page letter from RK987 - two people who have been in the car at speed.

  • LVMoore (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@Clay7484 First, new Bilstein shocks were installed in 2002. I talked to the mechanic at Sports-Imports, the guy who wrote the two-page letter about his experience with the car for the past 8 years. His statement was this: "I highly doubt it is a stock suspension setup, as RUF likely dialed in the ride height and corner-balanced the car."

  • LVMoore (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@LVMoore Good morning, bidders. First, a big shout-out to Reed, the principal mechanic for this car for the last 8 years. He provided additional servicing detail that calls for a couple of new photographs. Picture #133 shows an intercooler bypass tool he built to allow the engine to run without the intercooler, which greatly simplifies servicing the car. Pictures 134 and 135 show two views of the engine with the intercooler bypass installed. I am including this tool for the winning bidder.

Finally, picture #136 shows the Durametric cable which enables the reading and clearing of fault codes and graphing of various signals such as spark timing.

    @LVMoore
Good evening. What suspension setup is on the car? Was this work done by RUF. Thanks

  • RK987 1 year, 10 monthsago

@RK987 Cruising the highway at 80 mph in 6th gear, the tach reads just 2200 rpm – quiet enough to talk or listen to music. But, if you decide to bury your right foot, you better be prepared. At 2900 rpm, the turbo begins to spool up; at 3500 rpm, you'll know you're driving something special; at 4800 rpm, the car is screaming. There is nothing about this car for the faint of heart. It demands your undivided attention. Pushing it even close to its limits requires more talent and focus than anything I've ever driven. It is the most raw, analog, visceral driving experience I've ever had.

Larry has spared no expense in caring for this vehicle, and it has been an absolute honor to work with him and this legend of a 911/964 RUF 3.8L BTR turbo. It deserves a good home, and I'm sure, after the first gearshift, the new owner will fall in love.

    I know I sure did.

  • RK987 1 year, 10 monthsago

Hello to my fellow Porsche aficionados observing this auction!

I am proud to claim most of the responsibility for the service/repair/upkeep of this extraordinary vehicle over the past decade.

I grew up down the street from Sports-Imports of Cape Cod, the shop that has performed most of the maintenance on this 911/964 RUF BTR supercar.

When I was five, my father and I walked into this jaw-dropping shop full of gorgeous European cars where race car motors were built and tuned on an in-house dynamometer. Back then, Sports-Imports fielded an independent race team that swept victories throughout New England in the 90s.

Years later, as a teenager with the best afterschool job a car nerd could ask for, I first laid eyes on Larry's RUF. I soon learned it was not a typical 911. That's because the car had been shipped to the RUF factory in Pfaffenhausen, Germany, to be converted to a RUF BTR 3.8L turbo with an EKS transmission (no clutch pedal); it was THE topic of conversation among the shop's mechanics.

When the shop's owner took me on a test drive at 13, I became obsessed; I wanted to know everything about RUF cars. I watched the infamous video of the RUF 'yellow bird' lapping the Nurburgring dozens of times. Now, 20 years later, I have serviced, repaired, and driven every generation of 911. Reading the description of this car's history on this auction site, much I wasn't aware of, has given me a new appreciation of the exceptional care this car has received.

Diagnosing and repairing this BTR has given me a deep appreciation for RUF's engineering. Almost every air-cooled 911 has at least minor oil seepage from the timing covers, head studs, oil return tubes, or the engine case's halves. Not on this car. As you can see in the photos and videos, the underside of the flat-six is completely dry. It does not smoke, its power is smooth, and it doesn't misfire. I don't doubt for an instant that it can deliver another 100k of unparalleled driving euphoria to the next owner.
?Servicing this vehicle used to be somewhat annoying. That's because, to do almost anything, the first step was to spend 15 minutes removing the RUF intercooler. With the intercooler on, access to the engine bay is restricted; off, the engine is inoperable. So, to gain access while the motor was idling, I fabricated an intercooler bypass pipe/hose assembly for various component tests at idle. This bypass rig significantly improves servicing; it will be included with the car.

RUF retained the original factory Porsche 19-pin round diagnostic connector by the passenger footwell. It will communicate with compatible software from Durametric, allowing reading and clearing of fault codes, graphing of various signals/tests, etc.

This car is like no other. For the longest time, it was my benchmark for speed. To this day, I've seen few road-going cars that combine an incredible sound system with breathtaking performance.

  • Clay7484 (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Thanks for the reply. These air cooled turbo cars need to be rebuilt every 50k mi +/-. A $600 leakdown would go a long way as to how many miles the build has left before an expensive/long rebuild process.

  • LVMoore (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

    @Clay7484 Hi,
My most recent leak-down test was done at 60,000 miles, which I realize is not that recent. However, I've been religious about oil changes at 4,000 miles; filter changes every other oil change. In the years I did very little driving due to an all-consuming job, oil changes were even more frequent.

Here are the numbers for the last leak-down test.
    Cyl PSI Loss%
    1 140 2%
    2 140 5%
    3 145 2%
    4 140 3%
    5 145 4%
    6 145 2%

I first saw this car in August and met the owner, Larry, as I was picking up my Speedster from the same shop where he was picking up his wife’s Audi. I got a chance to look at the car, which was impressive, as it seemed to have original paint and obviously was a truly unique and special car. I gave Larry my retirement card because we shared an interest in Porsches. It turns out we live about a mile away from each other! About a month later, he asked if I would shoot the video of him driving and shifting the car and I was glad to help him out. I got a chance to ride in the car at speed and was highly impressed at the power and quality of the high-speed abilities of the vehicle. It was so far superior to my 930 Turbo that I was quite shocked. I now understand the excitement about the 964 Porsches, as my focus has mostly been
G-bodied cars. Whoever gets this car will certainly be getting something unique! Good luck to all parties!

A truely special car indeed, and I have to say what makes me the happiest, is it was both driven and maintained appropriately. Congrats on 30 years of excellent care-taking @LVMoore and I hope the next owner will continue to carry the torch appropriately

As a North Falmouth resident, and Porsche fanboy, I can attest to this cars beauty. I’ve grown up in the area my whole life and have lusted after this car since I was a little kid. Growing up in MA Ruf was not something you saw often. I’ll be sad to see this leave the streets of Cape Cod!! Who knows, maybe a local will snatch it up and I’ll get to continue dreaming about it! Good luck to the next owner, you are going to be getting a very special machine!

  • LVMoore (seller) 1 year, 11 monthsago

@38ZFX Hello. Thank you for your question. The short answer to your question is yes but with a caveat. First, I have a four-page list of parts used to bring my 3.6L replacement engine (see note below) up to a RUF-spec BTR 3.8L with a 6-speed gearbox and EKS transmission. Second, I have documentation attesting to the car’s shipment to Germany and of my payment to RUF ($14,000) for the work performed over the three months the car spent at the factory. The car, upon return, was incredible
Here's the caveat: before I put the car up for auction, I wrote to the RUF factory asking for the complete documentation of the BTR and EKS installation done in 1998. Sadly, in the early 2000s, the factory flooded, and their records were destroyed. So, I sent them all my correspondence with the RUF factory and asked them to certify that 1) the car was in their possession from February 1998 through June 1998, and 2) that my car was brought up to the minimum specs for a 964 3.8L turbo. That letter is included in the listed documents. However, the minimum specs understate the car's actual horsepower and torque. The Porshe mechanic who has worked on my car for the past 8 years will be posting a comment stating his belief that the car’s performance is among the best he’s worked worked on.
Note: I’d like to clarify why I replaced the stock 3.3L Turbo engine with a 3.8L Turbo motor. Two reasons: First, the RUF EKS transmission required a motor with an electronic engine management system which the stock motor did not have. Second, the RUF conversion kits, as I remember it, transformed a 3.6L turbo to a 3.8L turbo.

@CartBeforeHorse Hello, as you can imagine, I had many reservations about putting this car up for auction. I'm glad you and others see the car for what it meant to me - unadulterated pleasure for years.

I'd like to draw your attention to the sound system, and the deliberate selection of Nessen Dorma displayed on the PCCM radio. At the song's finale, with the volume up, the two 10" subwoofers - powered by two 130 amps in the boot - placed in the small of the driver and passenger's back provide an experience that must be felt as well as heard.

  • LVMoore (seller) 1 year, 11 monthsago

@38ZFX Hello; apologies for the confusion. The car's exterior is original, except for the front spoiler, the headlamps, and the RUF emblem above the Turbo emblem on the rear trunk lid.

To the Seller: Amazing, simply stunning!!! I’m certain the notion of moving on is tough. Compounded by the fact you USED IT, as intended and certainly bonded. I’d wager that the new owner you’ll pass it on to will be a driver as well. Hopefully giving you some comfort. GLWTA
I’d like to see a the winning bid looking like a Singer sold.

Scrolling through the pics and looking at the wear on the car over 30 years. Normally that bothers me, but in this case I see 100k miles of absolute enjoyment and likely great memories….all the smiles this car gave leaving the office early on a Friday or carving up a canyon. I’d imagine this car has many years and many miles to give to the buyer here. This is like buying a vintage Rolex….you could buy a new one instead but you feel compelled not to. Thanks for the presentation.

I look forward to your questions and I'll try to answer them quickly and thoroughly.
