Now up for auction is this 1991 Porsche 964 Carrera 2 Targa finished in Guards Red over a black interior. Representing one of only 746 U.S. specification Targas produced for the model year, this 1991 example was purchased by the seller in 2008 and has remained garage kept while being enjoyed during the summer months.  The car has been regularly serviced and upgraded with several performance modifications including a Rennsport engine chip, adjustable RS sway bars, Bilstein shocks, a Monty exhaust system, and more. Having undergone a major engine-out service in January of 2021, this Targa is now being offered for auction by its owner out of Texas with approximately 126k miles showing on the odometer.

This Carrera comes finished in the traditional shade of Guards Red and features a wraparound glass dome rear window, removable roof panel, and black Targa band.  A color-matched Pro-Wing rear spoiler has been added along with aftermarket black bi-xenon projector headlamps and clear corner marker lenses. The top was completely rebuilt by Dan Petchel in 2008, and the finish is said to remain well preserved with typical signs of road-going wear.  A small area of rust is visible at the base of the windshield, the front trunk strut is due for replacement, and there is a small chip on the passenger side of the windshield.  The driver-side door handle is also chipped and there is a scuff mark present on the driver-side mirror housing. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. The brake calipers have been painted red and this 964 rides on a set of 17” Porsche Boxster Twist wheels with colored center crests and Cooper Zeon tires showing date codes from 2016.

Inside, this Targa is appointed with a black interior featuring custom aluminum trim, aluminum instrument bezels, and an upgraded Pioneer stereo paired with a trunk-mounted amplifier.  The center console has been fitted with a silver insert and a perforated leather cover has been installed over the steering wheel. The seller notes that the cabin is in good overall condition with some wear present on the driver seat bolster. All gauges and accessories are reported to be fully functional apart from the passenger seat power height adjustment.

This 964 is equipped with an air-cooled 3.6L M64 flat-six engine rated at 247 HP and 228 lb.-ft of torque stock. A Rennsport chip, Fabspeed Carrera Cup airbox, and Monty exhaust give the flat-six a more aggressive tone and improved performance. Power is sent to the rear wheels by way of a G50 5-speed manual transmission with an upgraded RS clutch and lightweight flywheel. The suspension has been upgraded with adjustable RS sway bars, Bilstein shocks, H&R springs, and an RS front strut brace. The brakes have also been upgraded with cross-drilled rotors. The seller notes that annual oil and filter changes have been carried out during their ownership. Additional services include new valve cover gaskets in 2017, new shift rod bushings in 2019, and most recently a major engine-out service in January of 2021.

This sale will include original owner's manuals, service records, and the original headlights, corner marker lenses, and catalytic converter. This rare 1991 Targa has been well maintained and upgraded with high-end performance parts, do not miss your chance to become the next owner.

Why would a shop do an engine out service and put it back without the exchanger sleeve? Even if it was not on when they took it out it should have been done when replaced. If something that simple wasn't done I'm not sure you could trust other shortcuts more expensive were not taken.

  • cjmack4 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

    @Singer2020 No, sorry.

  • Singer2020 (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

do you have the original wheels?

  • cjmack4 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@USimport sorry, missed this one earlier. Yes the AC blows cold.

  • cjmack4 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@USimport I did ask them about the heat exchanger sleeve, and they said it was missing when the did the service. They could not get a new one in this week, but I've found one on Pelican Parts. It will not get here before the auction ends, but I will pass along once received. I still have the original headlamps and they were working when I did the conversion. But the driver's side lens was cracked.

  • USimport (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

Did you find out why your mechanic didn’t replace the heat exchanger sleeve and is it something you will take back and have them do since it was them who didn’t replace it?
Can you please tell me if the original head lights are still in working order?
    Thank you.

  • USimport (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

Can you tell me if the air conditioning blows cold air please?

  • cjmack4 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@Jdsarn I will say that acceleration is strong and Smooth throughout the power band. I’ve never noticed any hesitation or loss of power. You can also take a look at what the balmond said in his post earlier.

  • cjmack4 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@Jdsarn I’m sorry. They were not able to squeeze me in this week.

  • Jdsarn 2 years, 11 monthsago

You mentioned you were going to have Hance's do a compression test - did that happen?

  • cjmack4 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

Good morning, everyone! We are headed into the final hours. I’ll be here to answer any questions you might have. She’s truly an awesome car, a great example of one of the last air cooled targas. I will be sad to see her go. Happy bidding!

@Analog_911 Direct Message. On the right side, near the top of the listing, there should be a grey box with details of the car. Below that is a button labeled "Contact Seller." You can use that to send a direct message to me, so that we can exchange information and arrange a meeting.

  • Tartan43 (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@cjmack4 and a few more undercarriage pics pls!

    Thanks.

  • cjmack4 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@Tartan43 Thanks for pointing that out. I am taking the car to Hance's tomorrow hoping they will be able to do a compression test. I will ask them about the heat exchanger sleeve when I am there.

  • cjmack4 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@Tartan43 I have not had any diagnostics done on either warning light. Frankly, I find them to be not very useful. As when they do come on, like as you noticed sometimes starting out or coming off of acceleration, it always goes back off right away. I've heard bad sending units can do this. To check oil level for sure, I wait until the engine is warm and check gauges at idle on level ground.

  • Tartan43 (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

In picture #107, the passenger side heat exchanger rubber sleeve is missing. Since the engine was recently serviced its worth going back to Hance’s and having it reinstalled.

  • Analog_911 (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

    @cjmack4 - What is a "DM"

  • cjmack4 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@Analog_911 Hi! Thanks for your questions. I believe the original tires on the 964 were 205/55R16 (front) and 225/50R16 (rear). Currently on the car are 205/50R17 (front0 and 255/40R17 (rear). The small windshield chip is visible in photo 44. The pic showing the small rust spot did not get uploaded for some reason. I have re-uploaded it and have requested it be added to the auction posting. I am away from home all day tomorrow, but we should be able to work something out on Wednesday. Send me a DM and we will set it up.

  • Tartan43 (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@cjmack4 have you noticed when you’re at a full stop at the intersection and starting to turn right, your check engine (left most light on the oil gauge is on? Also, your check oil light goes on several times in the driving video? This is consistent with a warning for low oil pressure as it happens when you lift off the throttle and slowdown? Have you had any diagnostics for either warnings done?

  • Analog_911 (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

What are the original tire sizes. front and rear. and
What are the current tire sizes. front and rear ??
Seems like the current "Boxster-sized" tire (on the Boxster rim) would be significantly less wide than the original tire width.

I'll be in Dallas the next 2 days (Oct 12th and 13th) and would like to see the car if you have time.

Please add some photos of "the small area of rust ... visible at the base of the windshield" and the "small chip on the passenger side of the windshield"

Seems like photo #44 was supposed to capture both of these, but I could not detect either of the 2 noted imperfections.

    @Jdsarn Driving video is up!

  • cjmack4 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@jbauto Well, that was me. I like the looks, and the bi-xenons light up the road fantastically well. Not your cup of tea? That's ok.

  • jbauto (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

What possessed someone to buy and install those headlights? They look stupid. Why try to beam light thru a lens with a light blocker?

  • balmond (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

I was able to get by and check it out sunday. Overall its presented fairly and accurately. He has submitted the paperwork on the last major maintenance when they pulled the engine for PCarMarket to post. Basically it was a complete engine seal replacement. We took it out and its a very solid car. The engine gave me no indication it needs a rebuild. Really solid through all gears and from low rpm to high. We went windows down so can't comment on the AC. Seller has done a great job pointing out any blemish. The black point coming off on the door handle is not as bad as the pic looks. I'd pull both and get them powered coated as a cheap fix. The only thing I would have added is the paint oxidation that the seller has already posted on. It's probably due for a repaint but mechanically, nothing to report on, well cared for 911. I have a 74 targa so may not bid on this one but if you are in the market for the last of the air-cooled / window wrap around Targas, will not be disappointed.

  • cjmack4 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@balmond came by today to check out the car. I will let him post his impressions if he would like. But he did point out something that I feel I should disclose. As this is the original paint, it is oxidized in spots, mostly around the spoiler and above the taillights. We debated whether a clay bar would take it out, and agreed some spots may be a little too deep. I still love the original paint, but a little work might make it shine a little better. Unfortunately, I was not able to capture the oxidization well in a picture.

  • cjmack4 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@Tartan43 Not to my knowledge, the engine has not been rebuilt.

  • Tartan43 (registered bidder) 2 years, 12 monthsago

Thank you! And was the engine ever rebuilt? Between the mileage and the early MY production date (likely before the cylinder head gasket), it would be great to know.

  • cjmack4 (seller) 2 years, 12 monthsago

@Tartan43 Hi! The recent engine out service is in process of being posted. The clutch was replaced by the previous owner, but I have the paperwork from RS and will get that uploaded too. I’m going to get the car up on a lift this Monday. I will get pics and more info for you then. Thanks for your interest.

  • Tartan43 (registered bidder) 2 years, 12 monthsago

@cjmack4 Beautiful 964! Was the engine ever rebuilt? Can you post the major maintenance records - engine-out service, clutch replacement, etc. Since the car spent time in the rust belt can you post some additional undercarriage pictures with the car on a lift - suspension parts, wheel wells etc. Lastly what’s the engine block number - I’m trying to figure out if it’s the later revision with cylinder head gasket? Thanks.

  • cjmack4 (seller) 2 years, 12 monthsago

@balmond Thanks! Send me a DM and we will work something out.

  • balmond (registered bidder) 2 years, 12 monthsago

@cjmack4 Great - Love the car. One more question. I'm local near White Rock lake, you open to let me see it in person?

@balmond Hi, thanks for your question. Hance's European in Dallas did the work. I will get a pic of the invoice from the work uploaded. And sorry, I don't have the original wheels.

  • balmond (registered bidder) 2 years, 12 monthsago

A couple questions: 1) What was done in the Jan 2021 engine out service? 2) What shop did the work? 3) Assume the original wheels are not included?
