The first-generation Lexus LS 400 debuted as the marque’s flagship sedan, the product of a secretive, no-expense-spared effort to develop a world-class luxury vehicle for global markets. It was designed entirely from the ground up, using no existing Toyota platforms or parts, and equipped with a 4.0-liter V8 paired with a rear-wheel-drive layout. Finished in Black Jade Pearl over tan leather and upgraded with 17” BBS two-piece wheels, this 1991 example is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Illinois with approximately 123k kilometers (~76k miles) showing on the odometer.
This XF10 is finished in Black Jade Pearl and rides on aftermarket 17” BBS R90 two-piece wheels. Equipment includes halogen headlights with integrated fog lamps, headlight washers, body-colored lower bodyside cladding, and heated and power-adjustable side mirrors. Black trim and badging have been applied, along with window tint. The seller notes the hood and passenger side have been refinished due to sun damage and minor road wear. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report noting damages in 2004, 2007, and 2025.
The cabin features tan leather upholstery with Genuine California Walnut trim. Amenities include cruise control, a power tilt steering column with automatic tilt-away and manual telescopic adjustment, automatic climate control, analog gauges, a digital clock, a leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel, power windows and door locks, remote entry, and a rear window defogger. A Sony XAV-AX6000 digital multimedia receiver and replacement speakers have also been installed. The seller notes the front driver’s seat requires attention and the heater display is inoperable, although all other gauges, electronics, and accessories are confirmed to be in proper working order.
Beneath the hood lies a 4.0-liter V8 engine generating up to 250 HP and 260 lb-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven through a 4-speed automatic transmission. Performance features include an Electronically Controlled Transmission (ECT) with Normal and Power modes, speed-sensing power steering, four-wheel power-assisted ventilated disc brakes, an anti-lock brake system (ABS), and 4-wheel double wishbone suspension. The seller notes that the rear brake line and steering rack are leaking.
This sale will include a Canadian registration.
The seller would like you to know: “This 1991 Lexus LS 400 is a first-generation example of the legendary Japanese luxury sedan that helped redefine the premium market in the early ’90s. Finished in its original elegant color combination, this LS was owned by the same family from new until I acquired it recently—marking 34 years of single-family ownership.
As expected from a car of this vintage, it shows signs of age and use. According to the previous owner, the car was involved in two minor incidents: a low-speed garage bump in 2007 and an earlier bike-related incident in 2004, both with no structural damage reported. The granddaughter who sold me the vehicle didn’t have detailed records, but the car presents very honestly.
The exterior had typical sun damage—mainly on the front hood, bumpers, and sides—so I addressed this with fresh paintwork and finished it with a professional ceramic coating. I also updated the factory stereo for improved functionality while retaining the cabin’s original ambiance.
Mechanically, the LS drives with the smoothness these cars are known for, but it is not without its needs. The previous owner noted a leak from the rear left brake line and power steering rack. As with any 34-year-old vehicle, routine maintenance and mechanical attention are expected.
This LS 400 is not perfect, but it represents a rare opportunity to own a true Japanese icon—a car celebrated for its durability, engineering excellence, and reputation as a million-mile machine. With the right care, this LS can continue to deliver the bulletproof performance it’s famous for.
Whether you’re a collector, a Lexus enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates analog luxury at its finest, this LS 400 offers a strong foundation with a documented legacy and a timeless design.”

PCAR is looking into releasing all the videos. 1) driving 2) all the functions 3) interior 4) outside
I posted videos of all the functions. The steering is moving up and down as well as in and out. I will check with PCAR as to why it hasn’t been made available
@Jwellman I’m not sure the question. It cost me 2200 cash to paint the hood, the bumpers and the bottom all around. I posted the before picture.
What kind of paint was applied though? I see the button is missing for moving the steering wheel. Does that still work, or is the motor out?
@apekovic I'm back in Canada. I was going to drive back. However, it would sell better if the car was located in the USA. the paperwork should not be diffcult as it's a 25years or older.
i’m located in northern illinois too so i was wondering if you already had the documents because that would make the registration a lot quicker
Additional Enhancements:
The car has been treated with a full ceramic coating for long-lasting paint protection and a deep gloss finish. It also features nano ceramic window tint for enhanced UV protection, heat rejection, and added privacy.
@Apekovic that’s something TFX or similar transport can help.
do you have the papers/documentation for the import ?
@Jwellman Hi @Jwellman — just uploaded a shot showing the sun damage before paint. I also blacked out the gold grille using a removable black wrap, so it can be peeled off if you prefer the original look. I was actually on the hunt for the gold trim, as I think it really complements the green, but couldn’t track one down.

@vo152 Appreciate the kind words—completely agree. The LS400 is one of those cars that just puts you at ease the moment you drive it. Engineering brilliance wrapped in timeless luxury. Just saw a similar one go for $15K here on BaT, so it’s great to see these getting the recognition they’ve long deserved. Thanks again and all the best!

If you have never owned one you will never appreciate just how beyond brilliant they truly are. Engineering excellence and a true luxury sedan.
