The BMW 318is is celebrated within the E30 3 Series lineup for its balanced performance, reliable engineering, and engaging driving dynamics. This 1991 example is powered by a 1.8-liter M42 inline-four engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Refinished in Alpine White over a gray interior, it has a host of aftermarket upgrades, including a power sunroof, a Z3-sourced steering rack, a front strut tower brace, OZ Racing 16” wheels, Raceland lowering springs paired with Bilstein shocks, Garagistic rear subframe reinforcement plates, and ECU tuning. This E30 318is is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Tennessee.
The 318is is distinguished by its classic lines, unique 2-door compact sedan profile, and iconic BMW kidney grille, complemented by a front spoiler and a decklid spoiler. This example is refinished in Alpine White II, with the paintwork completed in 2017. It features fog lights, an aftermarket power sunroof, a power antenna, color-keyed mirror housings, and black bodyside moldings. It rides on bronze-finished OZ Racing 16” nine-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in Toyo Proxes R1R tires. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
The interior features manually adjustable front sport seats upholstered in gray cloth, with matching material extending to the rear bench and parts of the door panels. It is equipped with air conditioning, an onboard computer, power windows, and an AM/FM/cassette stereo. The shift knob is wrapped in leather and paired with a shortened shift linkage that was installed in July 2021. The seller notes that the air conditioning system was converted to an R134a refrigerant in September 2016, and there is a crack on the upper dashboard.
Power comes from a 1.8-liter M42B18 inline-four engine that has been enhanced with an aftermarket ECU tuning chip. The rear wheels are driven through a Getrag 5-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Aftermarket upgrades include an ECU tuning chip, Raceland lowering springs paired with Bilstein shocks, a front strut tower brace, Garagistic polyurethane bushings, and a Z3-sourced steering rack. In July 2021, the driveshaft and transmission bushings were replaced, and the clutch, brakes, and transmission fluids were flushed and replaced. Additionally, the control arms, sway bar links, and tie rods were replaced. The brake pads and rotors were replaced in June 2017, and in 2016, the clutch was replaced, and the rear subframe was reinforced with Garagisticplates.
This sale will include a clean title.

Here we go… headed into the final stretch. I’m here to answer any questions.
Owning ‘Greta’ for the past three years has been an incredible journey for my son Jack and me. This 1991 BMW 318is isn’t just a car; it’s been a passion that we’ve poured our hearts into. From the moment we won the auction back in 2021, we’ve taken pride in not just maintaining Greta, but in nurturing her with the love and attention she deserves.
We’ve invested in several thoughtful upgrades and conducted meticulous preventative maintenance, always aiming to preserve and enhance what makes this car special. The driving experience that the 318is offers is truly unparalleled—its handling and dynamics set a standard that I’ve found hard to match, even after driving scores of rear-wheel-drive ‘drivers cars.’
Unfortunately, with our recent downsizing and Jack heading off to college, it’s time for us to part ways with Greta. It’s a bittersweet moment, but we’re excited to pass her on to the next enthusiast who will appreciate one of the finest driving experiences out there. Greta has been a joy, and we know she’ll bring the same joy to her next owner. Bid with confidence, knowing that you’re not just getting a car, but a piece of driving history that has been cherished every mile of the way.
