Available for auction is this 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider S4 Veloce finished in white over a saddle leather interior. The final generation of Alfa Romeo’s original Spider was launched in North America for the 1991 model year and featured several improvements in refinement and reliability. This 1991 example was acquired by the seller earlier this year from its previous owner out of Georgia and comes equipped with premium Veloce trim. It features air conditioning, power-operated accessories, leather seating, and more. Treated to notable services over the last several years, this Spider is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York.
The more modern Series 4 Spider can be identified by its plastic body-colored bumpers, full-width rear taillights, and larger body colored side mirrors. The Pininfarina-designed bodywork of this Spider is finished in white with a black convertible soft top, a tan boot cover, and Quadrifoglio badging on the fenders. It rides on a set of 15” phone dial wheels mounted with new Michelin Premier A/S tires in January 2021. Detailed images can be found in the gallery along with a full CARFAX report.
The seats are upholstered in saddle leather with suede inserts and contrasting black door panels, dashboard, and carpeting. Amenities include simulated wood trim on the door panels and center console, a leather-wrapped airbag steering wheel, power mirrors, power windows, air conditioning, an AM/FM/cassette radio, and Alfa Romeo branded floor mats. The seller confirms all gauges and accessories remain functional apart from the passenger window which has come off its track. The odometer was reportedly replaced in 1992 and the CARFAX report indicates a potential rollback in November 2002, and “Not Actual Mileage” titles issued by New Jersey in 2013 and 2017.
This Spider is equipped with a 2.0-liter twin-cam inline four-cylinder engine with Bosch Motronic fuel injection. As much as 120 HP and 117 lb.-ft of torque are sent to rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Series 4 Spiders came equipped as standard with four-wheel disc brakes, power steering, and a driver-side airbag. Service is said to include new engine mounts, valve cover gasket, belts, spark plugs, and transmission and rear differential fluid flushes in 2017. Under previous ownership, the clutch master and slave cylinders, clutch hydraulic hose, drive shaft, torque tube, universal joint, battery, window regulators, and the rear section of the exhaust and muffler are all said to have been replaced.
This sale will include a clean title.

Does this generation of Alfa still have solid lifters requiring shims to adjust valve lash or did they move to hydraulic lifters?
If the former, how long has it been since the valves were shimmed?
