Styled by Enrico Fumia of the legendary design firm Pininfarina, the Alfa Romeo 164 was produced between 1987 and 1998 and was cooperatively built between Fiat, Lancia, Saab, and Alfa Romeo. This 1991 164 S (Sport) is finished in red with a factory aero kit over a black leather interior. It is equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 engine that produced up to 200 HP, which is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. Reported to be up-to-date on service and accompanied by extensive documentation, this Alfa Romeo is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Michigan showing approximately 109k miles on the odometer.

This 164 S is finished in red and features a factory aero kit that includes gray lower cladding and molding along with a rear wing. It rides on upgraded 16” Alfa Speedline wheels dressed in Pirelli Cinturato P7 tires from 2015. Imperfections are noted including clearcoat peeling on the roof and trunk, slight paint chips on the hood, and corrosion near the rear passenger-side fender side marker. The seller notes that the original 15” wheels are included with the sale. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin is upholstered in black leather with gray carpeting and features optional Recaro seats with front seat heating and power adjustment. Interior details include power windows, power locks, a sunroof, air conditioning, and a cassette stereo. The seller notes some headliner sagging. All gauges, electronics, and accessories are reported to be working properly.

This 164 S is equipped with a Busso-derived front-mounted 3.0-liter V6 with alloy construction, Bosch fuel injection, and polished intake runners. It was factory rated at 200 HP and 189 lb.-ft of torque, which is sent to the front wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. The seller states there are currently no outstanding maintenance items.

This sale will include a clean title and spare tire.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting my auction. I have owned this wonderful car for 10 years now. It has been garaged for most of the 10 years. Maintenance is up to date and the car is completely stock.”

I never understood what the fuss was about these Alfa V6s until I drove one. A fabulous engine. This one however does not sound like it's running on all cylinders. A V5 perhaps?

Thank you. Way better than I expected.

@bwinn99 Yes sir. Only the best. He knows the car very well as he services it. The second owner, whom i bought the car from worked for Dean for many years. His name is James Hollowell. He is retired now. A great Alfa enthousiast. The car was bought new by its first owner half a mile from my current home, Lochmoor Chrysler/Alfa Romeo. Its a very local car.

Thanks for the quick reply. I see you use Dean at Trail Auto. He is one of the best in the country. I grew up down the street from his shop and we used to ride our bikes down there to see what he had on his lot.

@R1958R4CV Hello R1958R4CV!! I posted some undercarriage pictures as requested. I did my best with a rolling Jack. Please feel free if you have any other questions!! Thank You!

@bwinn99 Hello bwinn99!! Timing belt was done about 5000 miles ago in 2018!! I am located on the east side of Detroit. the Grosse Pointe area.

  • CavalloA (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@Lyonsfin Hello Lyonsfin!! Transmission mounts and engine mounts and drive train rubber seem to be ok to my knowledge. The vibration is only on acceleration, this is my third 164 and that is a normal phenomenon. Air conditioning was kept original. My mechanic here is extremely bent over originality!! I had an Ansa exhaust with a european center muffler pipe installed on my other 164S and he (mechanic) despised it!!! It was sweet sounding. I have a European center pipe that will come with this car.

Maybe I missed it, but has the timing belt been replaced recently? Also, what part of the Detroit area are you in? Thanks.

Beautiful car! I noticed the shifter vibrating quite a bit. Are the transmission mounts and drivetrain rubber OK?
Was the AC updated to R134A?

@Rob234 Hello Rob234!! The knocking noise is a exhaust leak, very small in the center part of the exhaust. Locating an original part takes some patience. I do have a center pipe that will come with the car that is for European 164 with no catalytic converter. I do not want to install it as i don't want to remove cats, but it can work.

  • R1958R4CV (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

    Ok. Thank you

  • CavalloA (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@R1958R4CV Hello. I will try and take some undercarriage pictures, although challenging as i dont have a lift.. i will do my best.

  • CavalloA (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@Recambios Hello recambios. The exhaust note is a little aggressive because there seems to be a small exhaust leak in i believe the center part of the car's exhaust system. The rear muffler was replaced in 2018 with an original S muffler from Cisam. To locate an original center pipe is a small challenge as i am waiting to locate it. The exhaust note is louder than stock, but i like it.

@SailorMike Everything electric is in working order, seats, heaters in seats, heaters, radio etc... a new ac condenser was put in 3 years ago. It just needs a recharge with refrigerant.

  • CavalloA (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@SailorMike Hello Sailor Mike. The car starts on the first try. There is a picture of the sagging headliner in the picture gallery. It gets driven every Sunday!

  • Rob234 (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

    About the knocking noise?

  • R1958R4CV (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

Are there any undercarriage photos available? Thank you

  • Recambios 1 year, 4 monthsago

sounds like a dead cylinder ?

  • SailorMike 1 year, 4 monthsago

Also ... does everything work: electric seats, heat, A/C, radio, etc. And can you please add a photo of the "sagging headliner," so that I can have some idea of how severe that is?

  • SailorMike 1 year, 4 monthsago

How reliably does she start and generally run as a "daily driver"?
