The final evolution of the Porsche 944 sports car, the S2 version debuted in 1989 with Turbo-derived aerodynamic bodywork and a new 16-valve 3.0-liter engine, the largest production four-cylinder engine of its time. This 1990 example is one of 2,402 Cabriolet models delivered to the United States in total over a production run spanning from 1989 to 1991. It comes finished in Guards Red over a Black partial leather interior and features a 5-speed manual transaxle, 17” 996 Twist wheels, air conditioning, and power seats. Recently serviced with a new clutch, fuel injectors, spark plugs, and starter, this 944 S2 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida with approximately 35k miles showing on the odometer.

The 944 S2 Cabriolet was the first open-top 944 model and was built in a complicated process where each car was taken off the assembly line and delivered to ASC in Heilbronn, Germany, for structural reinforcements and conversion to an open-top convertible. The car was then redelivered to Porsche in Neckarsulm, Germany for final assembly. Compared to the original 944, the S2 model features an aerodynamic front end and rear diffuser borrowed from the 944 Turbo. This example is finished in Guards Red with a black convertible top and rides on 17” 996 Twist wheels. Other equipment included pop-up headlights, headlamp washers, integrated front fog lights, body-colored side moldings, dual power mirrors, Porsche-branded brake calipers, and “16 Ventiler” badges on the front fenders. The seller notes a small chip is present on the driver’s side door handle and the Hankook Ventus V12 Evo tires show production date codes from 2012. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

Inside, you will find a Black partial leather interior with electrically adjustable seats, air conditioning, cruise control, and a central locking system. Other accessories include black carpet floor mats with red Porsche lettering, a digital clock, a locking glove box, and an aftermarket Pioneer Bluetooth head unit. The armrest and glove box mechanism were recently replaced and the original Blaupunkt radio is included with the sale. The seller adds that all gauges and accessories are working properly, however, the dashboard gauge lights are dim.

The S2 is equipped with a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine rated at 208 HP and 207 lb.-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle. Since acquiring the car in May 2023, the seller has cleaned the fuel tank and overseen the replacements of the fuel injectors, clutch, spark plugs, and starter.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a spare tire, the original radio, a convertible top cover, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This car looks great and runs better! I used it every day. No problems at all. This is the best-running 944 S2 Cabriolet on the road.”

Have any on the belts or rollers been serviced ? How about clutch and throw out bering ?
    Thanks. DJT

  • Jimbo1907 (registered bidder) 4 monthsago

Thank you. The new owner should plan on having the belts changed before driving the car, I think.

  • bartda (registered bidder) 4 monthsago

@Jimbo1907 There are two belts, but only one timing belt. The other belt is the balance shaft belt. The timing belt is critical because if it breaks while the engine is running, the valves will come into contact with the pistons resulting in significant damage. Porsche recommends the timing belt be replaced (along with balance shaft belt) every 30K miles, or 3-4 years. If there are no records to document that the belts have been changed, bidders should consider this.

  • Jimbo1907 (registered bidder) 4 monthsago

The air compressor was included in the car when new. It is part of the emergency equipment, used to inflate a flat tire whilst plugged into the cigarette lighter receptacle.

An engine which has been cold for a week should not be revved up in that fashion; the oil is not warm and circulating, and revving the engine up to 4K revs will dramatically increase wear to the internal engine parts.

I think there are two timing belts to these engines, one for the valve train, the other for the counterweight shaft (I could be wrong here, I am no Porsche specialist) Have they ever been changed, if you know? I don't know what the recommended change intervals are, but a 34 year old car would have been supposed to have at least one change of them, and more than likely, two.

It's a handsome car, but to get full value, additional documentation would be essential.

  • Techspec360 4 monthsago

As a Porsche enthusiast, I cannot even fathom why you would start that engine cold and rev it up like that. This is not doing any favors to your auction as majority, if not all of us here looking at this are cringing at that sight and sound….

This is why a seller should never go it alone on these auctions. A consignment specialist that specializes in online auctions could have answered these questions and eliminated the question marks in the prospective buyers' heads. There are plenty of reputable Porsche independents in the Tampa area that could have helped this auction. As it is, it is going to be a struggle for the car to bid to the money it probably (or probably not?) deserves.

    mgatepi,
I went to ABE paints in Tampa. They gave me a code match for the paint, but they could not give me a thickness reading.

    Thanks for the question PorscheGT3,
I don't know the answer to that. When I purchased the car May of '23, it was not running. I had to get new fuel injectors put in.
There was no problems with the timing then. I just spoke with my mechanic and he never checked the Timing belt.

  • PorscheGT3 (registered bidder) 4 monthsago

Has the Timing Belt been done? If so, Date/Mileage?

  • bartda (registered bidder) 4 monthsago

@cmyunez Not referring to the air conditioning. All 944s came with a portable air compressor to inflate the spare tire. It came in a black plastic case embossed with the Porsche script and was originally stowed with the spare tire. Is the original tool kit with the car?

  • cmyunez (seller) 4 monthsago

    Thanks for the question mgatepi,
I will get a paint thickness reading tomorrow morning, and will let you know.

  • cmyunez (seller) 4 monthsago

Thanks for the question Bartda ,
I just uploaded the photo of the options code sticker.
As far as the "Porsche Branded" air compressor. I don't know the answer. I believe the air conditioner is original.
    Options code # 573

Has there been any paint work down? Paint thickness readings would be helpful

  • bartda (registered bidder) 4 monthsago

Can you provide a picture of the option codes sticker? Also, is there a Porsche branded air compressor with the car?
