Representing the final evolution of Porsche's iconic 944 transaxle sports car, the S2 series debuted with standard equipped power steering and anti-lock brakes, Turbo body styling, and a new 3.0-liter inline-four DOHC engine with four valves per cylinder. Finished in black over matching upholstery, this well-cared-for 1990 example is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida while showing approximately 142k miles on the odometer.
This 944 was previously refinished in black. The S2 features body-colored side moldings and the bodywork of the 944 Turbo, including an aerodynamically revised nose with integrated fog lights and a body-colored diffuser beneath the rear bumper. Some scratches are noted throughout the exterior, including the roof, bumpers, and a quarter panel. It rides on 16” alloy D90 wheels with Firestone Hawk Indy 500 tires from 2019 and 2020. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with an accident-free CARFAX report.
Inside, this 944 is appointed with a black partial leather interior. An aftermarket Kenwood stereo has been fitted, while the Sound Package was factory-optioned, along with an amplifier system that will accompany the sale. The seller notes a slight peel in the headliner near the rear hatch, the dashboard has minor cracking at the corner vent, the passenger side trim holding the clock is broken at the end, and the clock is non-functional. Additionally, the air conditioning mostly blows cold, although it runs on R12, likely requiring a recharge soon. The left turn signal blinks rapidly, though both bulbs are operational.
The largest displacement four-cylinder of its time, the 944 S2 carries a 3.0L 16-valve DOHC engine rated at 208 HP and 207 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by a 5-speed manual transaxle, while stopping power is handled by fixed four-piston calipers with ventilated disc brakes and ABS. Previous service by Stuttgart Performance addressed several major maintenance items, including replacing the caster blocks and tie rods, changing the timing belt, oil pan, and multiple front engine seals, and installing a new water pump. A general tune-up and full inspection were also completed, and an earlier-model exhaust system has been fitted. Recently, the car underwent light suspension work and significant engine maintenance, including the timing belt, water pump, engine seals, oil pan gasket, valve cover gaskets, a tune-up, and a full inspection. The seller states there are no significant issues, although the brakes squeal slightly, the pads are not low, and the rotors are in good condition. A host of service records is said to accompany the sale.
This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, sales literature, a spare tire, and a storage cover for the top, and the original stereo and amplifier. The CARFAX indicates an "Exceeds Mechanical Limits" report.
The seller would like you to know: “Original, black on black, time capsule 944 s2 in great driving condition. Not raced or modified in any way. It is a timeless design with incredible handling characteristics. A turnkey, fun, and reliable daily sports car inspired by a Le Mans endurance racer. Here are some words from the owner: ‘I decided to buy a 944 because I love the timeless design and handling characteristics. Plus, they are built like tanks. I decided on an s2 instead of a turbo because the power is similar but has a smoother, more linear power delivery. And more tractable around town. I looked for the best one available in the US (without being a low mileage garage queen) that I could drive and park on the street, etc. I found this one with reasonable miles. Not too low that I didn’t want to drive it, not too high that it was a concern. I bought it from a father-son vintage car restoration company in Ohio. They had a full workshop where they restored high-end antique cars. They did a comprehensive amount of work on the car. I suspect it was many years of deferred maintenance. When I bought it from them, I had them do the belt service as well at my cost. They did a pretty good job of painting it, too. During my ownership, I’ve done about 5000 miles and more or less performed all other remaining deferred maintenance; as of March 24th, 2024, I had a lot of major maintenance items taken care of by Stuttgart Performance. These services included changing caster blocks and tie rods, changing the timing belt, oil pan, many front engine seals, and a water pump, as well as general tune-up and full inspection. The car runs in top shape. I had an aftermarket exhaust system installed before, but I also had Stuttgart Performance install an OEM muffler and cat from an earlier year, 944, to give it a stock sound for mature driving. The car is very original, which was important. Most other S2 available at the time were either raced or modified. This is a good-condition time capsule that took me back to high school. The power delivery and the speed were surprisingly strong. Because it’s a light car, it’s quicker than you expect. Always kept in a garage. Until a year ago, I lived in Chicago and would store it over the winter with Midwest Performance, a Chicago-based transaxle Porsche specialist. They would do the service in the spring and return it to the road for me.’ Thank you for viewing. Feel free to ask questions in the comments. Thanks for viewing my auction.”

@nsolson67 yes I’ll add them now
Can you get compression and leak down numbers on the engine?
@Chrisngill22 thank you, and I agree the black looks very good on a 944.
@Streetsnake there is a dent present on hood and as for the paint on the car it’s not without its faults but it wears it’s color well there’s no fading clear coat or mismatched color panels I would give the paint a 7/10 on account that I think all black Porsches look nice.
In pic #39, is that a dent in the hood? About 11 o’clock of the emblem. Also, on a zero to 10 scale what condition would you say the paint is in? I appreciate the close ups of the larger, obvious scratches but it seems there is significant “speckling” on the front and around the wheel wells. From a distance, in the lighting, it looks great but just want to confirm. Much appreciated.
Heres a video of the car driving around for anyone’s viewing pleasure.

@jfporsche I would be happy to get a video of the car driving through the gears I’ll record one tomorrow and post it as soon as I can. I can answer your question for the owner and I can confidently say that this 944 is cable of long distance driving without any mechanical drama. These cars at heart are supposed to be touring cars from the factory, being that this one is in tip top shape , it would have no problem giving anyone (with or without mechanical know how) trouble free driving. That being said it’s important to remember that this is now a 34 year old car.
@Chrisngill22 Wondering it you could post a driving video going through the gears at decent rpm? Wondering if the owner would feel comfortable having his wife and daughter drive this car from FL to CA? Meaning...is the car reliable enough to make a cross country trip by two non-mechanical people that don't need any (mechanical) drama? Thanks.
Hello Everyone my name is Chris Nicolo-Gill, and today is the first official day of the auction and I would like to start things off by saying the car for sale is a very nice 1990 Porsche 944 S2 that I am consigning for Russel Christopher. The owner has had the car for a few years now and he’s loved and enjoyed it the entire time. It’s clear he had some passion for the car in the maintenance he kept up with and the condition it’s currently in. If anyone has any questions please feel free to comment or message me directly. Thanks for viewing the auction.
@BScifers thanks, the car is a real gem the owner took great care of it and loved it for every minute he’s had it since he acquired it. As for staying in the PCar family once you get one of these cars it’s hard to stay away. I currently have a turbo and 924 safari as well so I’m here to stay.
If MPC maintained it here in Chicago, bid with confidence folks. Great looking 944 Chris. Hope you're staying in the P-car family otherwise. 😉 GLWA
