This Porsche 911 Turbo is one of 600 Cabriolets produced for the U.S. market in 1989 and marks the only year in which the 930 came equipped with the improved G50 5-speed manual gearbox. It comes finished in Guards Red over a Cashmere Beige leather interior featuring optional Sports Seats with deviated black piping as well as a limited-slip differential and a shortened gearshift lever. The car is owned by a longtime PCA member who oversaw fastidious maintenance including the recent replacement of the convertible top and a previous engine-out service with a complete valvetrain replacement. This highly collectible 930 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of North Carolina while showing less than 48k miles on the odometer.

The 930 is characterized by its wide fenders and tea tray rear spoiler. This example comes finished in Guards Red (L80K) with a black cabriolet roof which was recently replaced with new OEM material and serviced with a new motor. Other equipment includes a front valence with integrated fog lights and a chin spoiler, black sharkfin stone guard decals, headlight washers, a periscope-style third brake light, and a dual-tipped exhaust muffler. The car rides on factory 16” Fuchs forged alloy wheels dressed in Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires (2018). The seller notes the hood and front bumper were previously refinished to address rock chips and the nose section is preserved under a layer of 3M clear paint protection film. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin is adorned with Cashmere Beige (QH) leather upholstery and features optional deviated black piping on the front and rear seats. The seller notes the front seats were reupholstered with factory-spec leather in 2010. Factory equipment includes an optional elevated steering wheel hub, adjustable driver’s seat lumbar support, a shortened gearshift lever, velour luggage compartment lining, and a Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46 radio with an amplifier. Other accessories include heated power front seats, a central tachometer with an integrated turbo boost gauge, power windows, heated mirrors, a central locking system, and air conditioning.

A turbocharged and intercooled 3.3-liter flat-six engine provides up to 282 HP and 289 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 5-speed G50/50 manual transaxle and an optional limited-slip differential. The seller notes a complete valvetrain replacement was performed in 2018 by Karl Troy of European Road & Racing along with the installation of new gaskets. An extensive collection of maintenance records is said to accompany the sale.

This sale will include the original owner’s manuals, a window sticker, a toolkit, a spare tire, an air pump, a battery charger, a clean title, a shop manual, and over 40 pages of maintenance history and documentation.

@Deichenb Appreciate the compliment on the 930 Turbo Cab. The tiny red lights are rev limit indicators that typically illuminate while the engine is cold.

In your inventory, this Porsche is marked as sold, which matches the information from the web. Before it was sold, however, it was listed in their inventory as 1989 Porsche 930 Turbo Cabriolet For Sale 1989 Porsche 930 Turbo Cabriolet Stock #70164. Is that right?
Question, was the Porsche marked as sold because of the auction? The web says "Sold Jul 30, 2023 with 47,797 miles Location: Durham, NC, USA". They are now offering the Porsche with 47,784 miles. I don't want to raise any doubts, just understand the various pieces of information.

What does a "complete valvetrain replacement" by Karl Troy in 2018 consist of?

  • MGDuece (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

    Hello,
A few pictures of the undercarriage would be a nice addition.
    Thanks

  • JohnBlackyoldtimer (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

Hi, is it correct that MCM sold the car before 2 years ago and if so can you give us the reason why it is to be resold after 2 years. Is something wrong with the car, or why is such a great contemporary witness not kept in the collection?

@flatcrank Thank you Ferdi Porsche for contacting us from the after-life! This example was owned most recently by a very seasoned collector. He completely understands that deferred maintenance equals larger repair bills downstream, so he does not cut corners with relation to maintenance. He also understands the added value associated with assembling complete documentation. You're more than welcome to travel to our showroom to sift through every last page of documentation. We'll offer you a cold beer and comfortable seating.
I just counted 120 pages of documentation that conveys with this Porsche 930 Turbo Cabriolet (comprised of service receipts & images of every last factory Decal, VIN#, Date Code, Marking, Stamping or Sequence#).
Comprehensive Service Records date back to 1999. This 930 Turbo Cabriolet had a 'partial engine out' complete valvetrain overhaul performed by European Road & Racing in N. Charleston, SC in December of 2017 (44K Miles on the Clock). I just uploaded a couple of receipts outlining significant engine repairs. Cheers!

To reach into the price range this could attract, I think it would be effective to scan all the service documented history.
The carfax suggests this vehicle sold new in 1990, 2nd owner in '94, 3rd and 4th owners in 2001 when it covered 8K miles in one year, which sounds like a near daily driver and enthusiastic new owner, and has been around dealers since 2011. The odo hit 40K circa 2003-2004 and is approaching 48K now in 2023.
I think a basic health check of the engine (compression and leak down performed by a Porsche dealer) is warranted.
Overall looks like a fine example with my preferred equipment level (LSD, short shift, and no goofy 90's audio system or security system or car phone, etc.)

@ftsuru We'll have our detailer capture the paint meter readings on Friday, then post the results. To the best of our knowledge, the Hood (Bonnet) & Front Bumper were resprayed to address multiple rock/stone chips. The remainder of the vehicle has factory paint.

Point of clarification, the transmission that comes stock in the ‘89 Turbo is the G50/50, not the G50. I assume that’s what is meant here, but technically as currently listed it’s being advertised with the normally aspirated version of the G50. The G50/50 is a far superior transmission to the G50, so correcting this is warranted.
