Up for auction is this 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa in Grand Prix white. It takes just one look to see how crisp and well cared for this car is. History shows that this car spent some time in TX with the bulk of its life in CA. In the short time owning this Targa, the current owner spared no expense to make it one of the most well sorted examples available.
The original Grand Prix White paint is in excellent condition, other than a cosmetic re-spray of the hood and decklid. The original Fuch Porsche alloy wheels will be included in the sale (see photo gallery). The photos show the car wearing a set of great looking replica Fuch wheels that are wrapped in brand new Bridgestone RE71R tires.
The original black leather interior is stated to be in remarkable condition. Pictures show some normal wear in the carpet near the clutch pedal. The seller made some repairs to the door pockets due to some minor cracks. The seats, dash, and carpet are all reported to be in good shape and many photos highlight that in the gallery. The all-original VDO instruments including the clock, work as they should.
The original 3.2-liter flat six is paired with the iconic G50 5-speed manual transmission and is in perfect running condition. The term “age is just a number” is one way to characterize this car. The 112k miles on the odometer are clearly overshadowed by the amount of work performed that rejuvenated this 911. Here is a list of the work performed within the last 400 miles:
Records of all work performed as well as a compression test are shown in the gallery photos.
This G50 Targa is being sold with all of the recent records, a clean Carfax, original books, and two keys.
The 1989 Carrera Targa was the final year and most sorted iteration of the g-body 911.

@buzzbanjo look online. It's a Contintental VDO unit. Then there's a guy in the Netherlands that sells the Porsche overlay sticker
@EuroFixer by chance where did you find that Porsche VDO radio/stereo system in the White Targa? I Have a 87 911 I d like to put that in. thanks
@Archer911Carrera Congrats!
wow reserve is met people! cool so see this site come out of no where
@Robert718 so true. something I am starting to learn more and more...
@Petroli @Adam just shows that mileage doesn't matter, its how your care for the car
Cant get over how clean / fresh this looks. It looks like a Toy.
@Archer911Carrera you can quote me on it.
@EuroFixer Will hold you to that shipping at your cost if I buy this ; - )
@Archer911Carrera I'd rather just as well ship them. If the car is transported, I do not want the transport company to have any opportunity for excuses if something were to get damaged due to the wheels being inside the car. One wheel could easily shift and hit a turn signal stalk or something of that nature. Plus even with bubble wrap I don't want them laying on the leather. I'll pay for the shipping if that helps and I'll place the bypass in the frunk. The aftermarket wheels are relatively cheap in the grand scheme of things.
@EuroFixer Maybe the best thing to do for whomever buys this car is to bag the 4 extra wheels and put them inside the car as well as the CAT bypass pipe. With enough bubble wrap around everything no impressions will be made on the upholstery.
@Archer911Carrera and others. A few updates. I have put the catalyst back in the car and got a smog test. It passed with flying colors and I took a picture of the results. I also took a picture of the cat with heat shield installed for reference. Pictures of the interior door pocket reinforcement repair have also been submitted.
@mdsmds the car will come with 2 sets of wheels. When I saw how much the fuchs were commanding, I took them off the car to preserve them. The wheels on the car are replicas and have fresh tires. Logistically, if preferred to ship the car with the fuchs on it, that can be arranged and the others shipped to your location or vise versa, but probably best to ship the car with the fuchs on it.
I will take pictures of the door pocket repairs and send in to pcar tomorrow. The area is the plastic frame area inside the pocket when you open it. Basically reinforced it to keep it proper.
Bid in the amount of $50,000
Also, can you clarify the wheel situation? Is the car selling with two sets of wheels? Thanks.
The seller made some repairs to the door pockets due to some minor cracks.
Can you post pictures of the repairs?
Bid in the amount of $45,500
Bid in the amount of $36,000
@Robert718 it is very special. First time I drove it, before all the work, it was evident.
Nice @Archer911Carrera
Way to separate the time wasters from the real players. This car looks very special.
Bid in the amount of $35,000
Bid in the amount of $22,000
Bid in the amount of $20,000
@lukenallen As is customary, and out of respect for the fine people of pcarmarket, I will just say that the reserve price is very realistic and based on a combination of the current market for such a car and the fact that auction reserves need to be at a certain level to ensure that vehicles actually sell. Thanks for the bid and good luck!!
Do you mind telling me the reserve?
Bid in the amount of $8,000
@tyerden gotcha! Thanks for looking. Should you go that route I can certainly help in getting the car to them as both shops are less than 5 miles from mine and you'd be in good hands with both of them.
@EuroFixer I hear ya, but I am located in a remote mountain location with 350 miles to nearest "dealer" so I like to have my entire collection in "top form" at delivery. That said, your post is very well taken. Your detailed responses demonstrate your passion and knowledge about the car that is refreshing!
@tyerden Not sure why you'd want to do that to a perfectly sound engine? We do not work on these cars as part of our regular business. Locally, for air-cooled cars I recommend dealing with Steve Grosskemper of Black Forest or Jae Lee of Mirage International (Jae has built several engines for Singer) Both are experts in air-cooled 911 cars, and air-cooled cars are a central focus of their shops.
Would your "shop"be able to arrange an engine rebuild prior to delivery if I chose to have that performed?
@Archer911Carrera no problem! Let me know if there are any other questions/concerns
@EuroFixer I miss the sensor-now I see it's behind the clip on heat shield. Thanks.
@Archer911Carrera I have no records of a rebuild on the engine. When the valve adjustment was done the valvetrain was very clean, but gave me no indication that the heads had recently been done. Given the originality of the car and the fact that most of the cosmoline still remains on the engine case and heads, I would guess that there is no rebuild in the car's history. When Steve Grosskemper of Black Forest had the car he was impressed with the power but did not suggest that it had a rebuild (my thought is that he would have said something. If you know him, he's very detailed) I acquired the car from a family member of the previous owner. It was part of a collection of cars in TX that were basically non-opted for 10 years as the owner had health issues, but would not sell his cars. Once he was moved to a home, the family began to sell them off. In the paperwork I have, there are a bunch of TX registration renewals for non-op. Records before his ownership are scarce.
The O2 sensor is plugged in and cycling as it should. I have the original catalyst and heat shield which will be included in the sale and can be installed before delivery if preferred. Cat and test pipe will go with the car either way. The cat is very healthy and was removed for preservation purposes (did the same on a Ferrari F355 I had years ago).
The only other 'removal' was the buzzer for the ignition as it annoyed me. Still have that as well and it is stored in the glove box of the car. Also easy to install as it is just under the hood of the car.
Hope this helps!
To the seller:
From the receipts posted the engine does not appear to have been rebuilt but do you have any knowledge that it was at some point?
The Cat and heat shield are gone and a bypass pipe in their place. Do you know how the disconnected oxygen sensor was dealt with and do you have the original parts?
Are there any other original parts that have been deleted and are included with the car (Fuchs I know)?
Thanks.
@Sepoca25 not especially. It's a driver's car that is really, really, nice and has been sorted. It has what I would call a lite patina that is consistent throughout the car which is why I bought it. I looked at over 10 cars in person before finding this one. I was only interested in G50 cars (coupe or targa), and there were some that had a paint job, but the interior was bad, or vice versa. I wanted a car that was an honest car and that 'matched' so to speak. Then I wanted it ultra reliable and such which was a decent project. If you want a car that is a complete garage queen, this isn't really it. If you want a damn clean honest original car, that is a driver's car, to take you from San Diego to Maine, this is the car. If you have any other questions on anything not covered in the listing or pictures fire away.
is there anything that a potential buyer would want to know here? The car looks very clean and for this mileage would expect more wear (not complaining). Just making sure I’m seeing this right. Thanks for any input
@gshibayama that ad has been removed. If you have any questions about the car feel free to fire away and I can answer anything not addressed by the photos or the ad as described by the auction. Thanks!
Still listed at Craiglist at $52,500.....

For sale is a great example of a well sorted G50 911 Targa. As far as I know I am the third owner of the car. It started off in the Bay area of CA and then made its way to Houston TX where it had about 1500 miles clocked over 10 years. I acquired the car with a friend about a year ago and we went through the car top to bottom and sorted out anything that needed attention and added a few goodies along the way. Currently the car sits on Fuchs replica wheels, but we have the originals with original center caps and took them off to preserve them. The car is an honest 100k car that has a light, consistent patina throughout the vehicle. It is an absolute dream to drive now and extremely well sorted. A/C blows cold and the car has great heat. The stereo is a modern throwback with great sound. This is a great example of a G50 car that needs nothing; a turn-key 911 in great shape.
Price is somewhat negotiable, but low-ballers will be ignored. We are open to a trade for a 964 or 993 manual coupe in similar condition. Any questions feel free to contact me
