Among the first of its generation delivered in the United States, this inaugural year 1989 Porsche 964 Carrera 4 Coupe came factory finished in Slate Grey Metallic over a Black and Silk Grey leather interior.  It had been acquired by the current owner in January of 2020 with the goal of adding to the custom restoration undertaken by the previous caretaker.  The flat-six motor was rebuilt to 3.8L RS specifications along with the 5-speed G50 gearbox by Reno Rennsport of Nevada in 2018, and the current owner has overseen the installation of a new Accuair air suspension system, upgraded air-conditioning, custom BBS wheels, and a customized interior featuring a Porsche Classic Radio and heated Recaro Sportster CS seats in Nappa leather.  Having been driven approximately 6k miles over the last two years, this Carrera 4 is now being offered for auction by its owner out of Florida.

This 964 is presented in its factory specified color of Slate Grey Metallic and features later-style aero mirrors, a dual-outlet RS-style rear bumper, Flat6Illumination LED headlights, black trim rings, and a front bumper with RS-style air ducts and deleted license plate recess.  The brake calipers have been refinished in metallic grey and the 18” E88 3-piece wheels were custom built by BBS America and dressed in Hankook Ventus V12 tires.  Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report showing minor damage to have occurred in Ontario in 2015.

The Black and Silk Grey interior has been outfitted with a set of new Recaro Sportster CS heated seats trimmed in Napa leather along with a new Momo Mod 07 deep concave Alcantara steering wheel. Other equipment includes an upgraded Function First black anodized shift knob, Nappa leather shift boot, black anodized Rennline trim pieces, and a Rennline H3R Black Fire Extinguisher.  The sound system has been upgraded with a new Porsche Classic Communication Radio including Apple CarPlay.  In September of 2020, the current owner also commissioned the installation of an entirely new A/C system with upgraded Griffiths components. The odometer currently shows approximately 64k miles, although it is said to have been replaced in 2010 when CARFAX notes a potential odometer rollback.

In 2018, the air-cooled flat-six engine was entirely rebuilt by Reno Rennsport of Nevada to 3.8L RS specifications including new JE pistons, bearings, billet valve covers, fuel lines, ignition wires, and much more.  The 5-speed G50 manual gearbox was also refreshed during this time.  The current owner more recently installed an upgraded Fabspeed RSR performance exhaust as well as an air suspension including an Accuair Elevel+ management system with Performance Airlift struts. The heater blower motor has been deleted with a block-off plate, although the heater blower motor will be included with the sale should the next caretaker choose to reinstall it.  A comprehensive list of refurbishments and upgrades performed during the restoration is provided below:

  • 3.8L RS-spec Fully Rebuilt Motor & Transmission

  • FVD Cat Bypass Pipe with new Gasket
  • FVD 964 G-Pipe Muffler Bypass Pipe

@modificaclassica in summary, if you were doing a performance oriented build = coilovers and for practical reasons = air system? But I agree, easy to bolt in a new system if the air isn't to one's particular tastes. Thank you for the detailed answer and if I don't buy it GLWTS.

  • modificaclassica (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@jcbfff The air ride is entirely bolt on, and can of course be swapped for a more traditional coilover setup by the next caretaker in a day’s work. I had a 2017 991.2 previously with front axle lift, and enjoyed being able to make Home Depot runs, etc and not worrying about every speed bump in the way by easily lifting the front end. I’ve always otherwise typically had coilover setups on other 911s and bmws I have owned in the past, but the airlift performance struts have come such a long way, and the accuair elevel+ management is really reliable with how it manages each corner and keeps the car level and planted. I wanted to be able to lift the car instantaneously in any situation to avoid damaging the undercarriage, or scraping an exhaust, etc on steep approaches. There are 3 programmed ride heights, and essentially infinitely other custom settings. Hopefully that helps answer your question.

to @modificaclassica or anyone: why go with the air suspension rather than a coil over set up? just for looks or is there some tech in there which enhances handling as well as keeping up with my neighbors Impala low rider? LOL.

  • jtrac (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Such a great car with an even better owner. I have driven along side this 964 since possession and enjoyed each meticulous detail and upgrade along the way. The next driver is in for an unforgettable time. GLWA!

  • modificaclassica (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@drola coming from you Pedro that means a hell of a lot, literally one of the most knowledgeable P car fanatics I have ever met.

  • amissair (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

You can’t build this car in today’s market for under $100K. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts when you find a quality completed build. It may not be a garage queen, but it’s the king of the asphalt, and that’s where it belongs. Good luck, Ellie!

  • drola (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Truly a nice car and always a crowd pleaser. Buyer will get a great car for sure.

  • Fury996 2 years, 7 monthsago

@modificaclassica thank you for the quick response! Appreciate your candor and helping all of us buyers have a better understanding of the car on offer. Truly a beautiful example with some great outlaw details.

  • modificaclassica (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

I never thought to have the car looked at for paint meter read outs, as this is by no means a collectors show car. At the request of a couple folks, I borrowed a paint meter today at Foreign Affairs Motorsport in Pompano, the good news is the paint is in great condition with meter readouts varying 17-20. I am told if the paint was all original they would read between 6-8, so meter readouts are consistent with a full respray. I have no documentation on the paint job, but I was told it looks fairly good. I am sure with a paint correction it would look even better, but I drive the car and always thought it looked great after a wash at home. Again, I can’t reiterate enough this is not a collector’s car, it’s an absolute fun driver’s 911 that has some, well quite a bit ;) of extra get up and go power with the 3.8L build done to the motor.

  • modificaclassica (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@aaacooled911 just a heads up the invoice for 3.8L build and transmission were added.

  • modificaclassica (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@Fury996 1. Admins had a typo, engine is on OEM mounts. They've uploaded the 3.8L invoice rebuild that was roughly $32k.
    2. You asked regarding more info on odometer rollback from previous owner and carpet condition, the car is 33 years old. I don't have more information regarding the odometer issue from decades ago before my ownership. If you're looking for a concours car, I'll be completely honest, this is definitely not the car for you.
    3. I don't have further details on the accident from prior owner other than that the cost was minor, I am going to pick up a paint meter today and take some pics.
    4. 964 OEM seats will be included in the auction, they are in my air conditioned storage unit, there is a scratch on one of the OEM seats as indicated in photos. The seats again are 33 year old seats, so they're not impeccable but they are decent.
    5. I don't have compression leak down numbers, and don't plan on doing them. This is an absolute driver's car, the motor was just rebuilt less than 10k miles ago by an incredibly reputable outfit that does many 3.8Ls. The car just rippppppps.....this is by no means a garage queen, it's for weekend runs for coffee with friends, Home Depot runs for a bag of screws, and sheer driving pleasure.

I appreciate the comments regarding my 64 being a beautiful car, and I understand everybody has their own requirements and levels of scrutiny. With that said, happy bidding to everybody!!

  • Fury996 2 years, 7 monthsago

Nice car, but have some questions:
    1. Photos show oem standard engine mounts, but listing claims RS mounts.
    2. Any details regarding the odometer rollback in the Carfax? Carpet condition and stains on original interior surfaces near door and footwell suggest higher mileage.
    3. Any details regarding the reported front accident reported on Carfax totalling over $5K in 2015 USD? Or nearly $8K in today’s money? Do you have paint meter readings around that area?
    4. Original seats are not oem sport seats per the photos. They are regular 964 seats. Mods should correct that part of listing unless pics are wrong.
    5. Any chance you have compression and leakdown numbers from recently?

Sorry for the long list, but a six figure 964 warrants a different level of scrutiny. Beautiful car. Hoping it stays in my budget.

@flat6rebel Robert thanks for the kind words!!! As the clock continues running down I am feeling more and more anxious about even considering letting it go.

Elie I’m saddened you’re letting this 964 go but life has seasons. For the future owner, you’re getting one hell of a build. Meticulous work on every aspect. Been a pleasure seeing you put this together and drive along side. I’ll have my ? ready for this auction!

@EQM currently set up in the cockpit is a Momo Mod 07 wheel in black alcantara with black leather Porsche crest embossed horn button. The 12’ o clock stripe as well as the Momo lettering are both blacked out. This is undoubtedly the cleaner look of the 2 steering wheels. I also have included the Nardi Deep Corn mahogany steering wheel with matte black center that will go with the car. Both steering wheels are deep concave.

@aaacooled911 just a heads up, admins posted screen shots by line item for the build. The overall cost of the 3.8L rebuild and transmission refresh done by Reno Rennsport in Nevada was over $32,000. The previous owner and his wife were both active PCA members. Of course, I have all the supporting invoices from Reno Rennsport for the full motor and tranny build for the next caretaker, and had some great conversations with the shop before I purchased the car in 2020. I also have every single invoice for all service, maintenance, and upgrades since I became this amazing vehicle's caretaker.

  • modificaclassica (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@modificaclassica humbly honored for the admiration. So much time and love has gone into this build, it really is very near and dear and special to me. Beyond the satisfaction of seeing the build come to fruition, I have made some great friends along the way on our air-cooled drives to key largo for breakfast. It's honestly very difficult to not completely smile ear to ear every single time I get behind the wheel.

Very nice build...congrats. With the air suspension at max lift, how much clearance is there at the lowest point of the car (assuming the front end) from the ground? it looks really low for where I live. Thank you.
