Marking the final year of the R107 generation SL-Class roadster, the 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL was the most high-powered model available for North America featuring a 5.6-liter V8 engine. This example comes finished in Signal Red (568) over a Palomino leather interior. Reportedly a lifetime Colorado car, this meticulously maintained two-owner R107 is now being offered for auction by its seller with less than 22k miles on the odometer.

This example comes finished in Signal Red (568) with a matching removable hardtop and a retractable fabric soft top in black. Details include chrome trim on the bumpers, windscreen, windshield wipers, mirrors, front grille, door edges, wheel arches, rocker panels, and trunk lid. It rides on 15” Gullideckel wheels dressed in Michelin Destiny tires from 2004. The seller notes some paint imperfections including a small chip on the roof. Additional images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin features Palomino leather upholstery with matching carpets, a contrasting black upper dashboard, and burl wood trim. Accessories include automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel, a center armrest, power windows, and a radio. The seller adds that the power antenna does not go up or down, and the rear brake light needs to be replaced. All other gauges, electronics, and accessories are reported to be working properly.

A naturally aspirated and fuel-injected 5.6-liter V8 SOHC engine delivers up to 227 HP and 287 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels by way of a 4-speed automatic transmission. Stopping power comes from power-assisted disc brakes at each corner. The suspension includes double wishbones in front, a diagonal swing axle in the rear, and stabilizer bars front & rear. The seller adds that service items throughout the past year have included fluids and filters changed, replacements of the accumulator & relay fuse, repair of a loose cable that caused the back roof latch to stay in place, and the replacement of the fuse to the radio. The seller recommends replacing the rubber exhaust hangers.

This sale will include a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting my auction! My name is Tyler and I'm selling this beautiful car for my mother-in-law. This car is her pride & joy. Since coming to the US in her teens, she dreamed of owning a red convertible Mercedes. Once she accomplished that goal as the second owner of this vehicle in 1992, she found that she loved it so much she wanted to keep it in pristine condition and not drive it too much! The car has been lovingly cared for over her 31 years of ownership and it shows. She purchased it on August 17, 1992, and it has been stored mostly in her personal garage. Her daughter remembers as a child one of her chores was to go open the garage door and run the car for at least 30 minutes every month.”

@EZEdChicago there are no issues with the system. The best way to lose a vehicle auction is to wait until there is low time on the clock, if your internet speed isn't quick enough or experiences an interruption this is often the result. We appreciate you participating in the auction.

Hey Everyone! I'll be monitoring this auction closely until we sell. Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions/pic requests or I'm happy to do a FaceTime walk around of the car if anyone is interested.

Also @EZEdChicago - I spoke with the MB of Denver lead tech that worked on the car most recently (he remembered it well!) - he took another look at service records to confirm - his comment was "anything major you would be concerned about for a long road trip is in great condition". He didn't have any maintenance suggestions before jumping in for a cross-country cruise!

  • TwilliamsCO (seller) 11 months, 4 weeksago

Hey Everyone, a friend suggested I add a driving video to the mix. I just sent to the PCar folks, so it should be uploaded shortly. Also, I noticed this morning that the washer fluid light was back on, after I filled it last night. There is probably a loose hose, and leaking windshield fluid. Called MB of Denver and they said worst case its a ~$500 fix, but more than likely it's a simple (cheap) hose.

  • TwilliamsCO (seller) 11 months, 4 weeksago

@EZEdChicago Hey! I just uploaded pics to the gallery to show owner's manuals, purchase receipts, tools, 2 keys, etc. Regarding drivability, since Covid the car has mostly been parked in the garage and certainly hasn't taken any long road trips. Since I moved to CO about a year ago, I've probably driven it ~50 miles (getting it detailed, taking to MB of Denver, back and forth from our house to MIL's house). I can't speak to a long road trip like that specifically, but based on what I know it should be in good condition to do so. I responded to your DM and would be happy to chat on the phone at your convenience!

@TwilliamsCO: Do you have the tool kit, owners manual, and two keys?

Separately, how much have you or the owner driven the vehicle recently? My question is related to whether one should attempt to drive it back to Chicagoland or contemplate having it shipped.

    @TwilliamsCO:

    Beautiful car!

My spidey sense tells me MB99 is just a wet towel (and/or trying to steal a great car by knocking down its value).

I’m not sure whether my wife would like this model, but if so I’ll weigh in tomorrow.

In the meantime, hold fast to your course—wiper fluid and R134 conversions are hardly meaningful issues.

  • TwilliamsCO (seller) 11 months, 4 weeksago

@MB99 - I can understand that assumption, definitely didn’t realize the leap some folks would make. Based on the last assessment by MB of Denver, there are no electrical issues. I chose not to replace the brake light, nor windshield wiper fluid prior to listing for expediency (overlooked as inconsequential). Based on your comment I just ran out and refilled the washer fluid, the light is now off (pic added to gallery). I also just took a picture of the taillights with and without brakes – the light on the trunk is out (pic in gallery). Regarding refrigerant, I don't believe there was a conversion done, but I will circle back on that after I speak with the owner.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I assume you would have filled the windshield washer reservoir and replaced the tail light bulb if that was all it took. Does this mean the problem with the warning lights is electrical in nature? Also, I’m a little confused about the status of the air conditioning. Has the refrigerant been converted to R134? Thanks.

@JohnBlackyoldtimer Great callout on the soft top pin not being properly engaged on the original photos - user error. See the most recent uploads into the gallery. The pin is now shown to be properly engaged. Thanks!

Pictures 59 to 61 show that the pin for locking the soft top is not properly engaged. The top must be firmly in place. To do this, you have to press the hood down with a little force at this point so that the hood rests on it. Then the rear window should also be taut. Please take a picture and post it. Thank you

  • TwilliamsCO (seller) 12 monthsago

@JohnBlackyoldtimer thanks for the questions! I’m not entirely sure what you mean. The back latch is locked and everything appears to have good tension to me. We had MB of Denver recently fix that back latching mechanism (tighten up screws, as the engaging handle cable was loose). Would you like to reach out to me directly via email and I’ll give you my phone number - happy to do a FaceTime walk around of the car and/or diagnose your concerns with the soft top latching in place.

In the new pictures the rear window is not taut. Picture 131 suggests that the top has not been locked at the back, or has it perhaps already contracted and can no longer be closed? The rear window should be well tensioned! Can you please upload a photo with the top completely closed. Thanks.

@JoeyBenz I'm adding a few additional pics to the gallery - you're right the plastic soft top windows were a bit dirty in the original photos. I cleaned them and took pics in sunlight and in the garage to better show their clear condition. I'm not able to add videos, I'll call the PCM folks to upload the cold start video (that shows warning lights are working and not on) asap. In the meantime - I took a picture of the gauge cluster in ACC mode to show all lights are working and another picture once started to show only 2 warning lights are on. The two warning lights that are on are windshield washer fluid being low and one showing the rear brake light needs a new bulb. Hope that helps answer your questions :) Thanks again for your interest & happy bidding!

  • TwilliamsCO (seller) 12 monthsago

@JoeyBenz thanks for the questions. I don’t believe any of the lights are on except for the tail light being out. I don’t think my cold start video from last week (showing dash lights all come on and go off) made it onto the gallery - let me address that. I’ll get new pictures loaded this afternoon showing condition of the soft top windows.

  • JoeyBenz (registered bidder) 12 monthsago

It’s hard to tell but the soft top rear window looks discolored/faded? The car was recently at a repair shop but I see multiple lights on the dash including the abs are they going to be addressed? Thanks Joe

  • TwilliamsCO (seller) 1 yearago

Thanks for your bid @JohnBlackyoldtimer! I had MB of Denver forward me their latest multipoint inspection checklist this morning. We had a recently replaced accumulator go bad (under warranty) and MB of Denver replaced it on ~9/27/23. I just uploaded the email to the gallery. Confirming a few other questions - AC and heat are both working great. The paint is original. Speaking with the owner it sounds like one of the panels under the front bumper was replaced through insurance ~20 years ago. She couldn't recall if it was left/right. It's not showing up in the carfax for whatever reason, but adding that info for full disclosure :)

  • TwilliamsCO (seller) 1 yearago

@JohnBlackyoldtimer Hello! Thanks for the questions. Brake fluid, Engine oil, transmission oil, antifreeze/coolant, battery, air filter and fuel filter all changed in ~August of last year. AC is working perfect, I'll check the heat this afternoon. Let me double check on the other questions and I'll circle back with you shortly. One quick question - what do you mean by exchange of climate resources?

  • JohnBlackyoldtimer (registered bidder) 1 yearago

Hello, is this still the first coat of paint and was there any damage to the sheet metal? Are the air conditioning and heating working perfectly? Are there any records of the inspections? Have the brake fluid, engine oil and transmission oil been changed? Was there an exchange of climate resources? Otherwise it's a very nice car.
