A significant evolution of Porsche’s iconic transaxle sports car, the 944 S was introduced in 1987 featuring a new inline four-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. This 1988 example comes finished in Zermatt Silver Metallic and is said to have been purchased new by the seller’s neighbor for his 30th anniversary. The car is said to have been driven very infrequently over the past two decades while started regularly by its owner for mechanical exercise. The seller eventually acquired this 944 after the original owner’s passing before having it transported to a Porsche specialist for a timing belt and fluid service along with new motor mounts, a wheel alignment, and an A/C update. Accompanied by extensive maintenance records dating back to the original purchase, this 944 S is now being offered for auction out of Texas with just under 50k miles showing on the odometer.

This 944 comes finished in Zermatt Silver Metallic (LY7Y) and is distinguishable as an “S” version by the rear model lettering and “16 Ventiler” script side moldings. The car was protected from road wear by a removable acrylic bra on the nose, and the seller describes the exterior to be well preserved apart from some faded emblems and a few small dimples at the bottom of the driver’s door. The seller also states some areas of the car were refinished under the original ownership, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. Brighter European-spec headlights were fitted by the current owner and a set of new Ohtsu tires were mounted to the factory 16” Phone Dial wheels in June 2021.

Inside, this 944 sports a black partial leather interior with an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, an electric tilt sunroof, power accessories, air-conditioning, a digital clock display, and a newer Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 radio with Bluetooth/USB connectivity. The A/C refrigerant was updated under the seller’s care and the front speakers were replaced along with the hood/hatch struts, glovebox slides, some trim pieces, a window switch, the HVAC control panel, and the A/C compressor. All gauges and accessories are said to be fully functional.

The 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder DOHC engine sends up to 190 HP and 170 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle. Compared to earlier versions, the 944 S was improved with progressive springs, larger anti-roll bars, strengthened wheel bearings, a more powerful brake servo, and refined Bosch DME programming. The timing and balance shaft belts were replaced upon the seller’s acquisition along with all new fluids, motor mounts, and a wheel alignment.

This sale will include extensive records and documentation as well as the original owner’s manuals, toolkit, spare tire, air pump, and a clean title.

    Would have easily surpassed that bid if original paint could have been verified and/or which panels had been refinished and to what degree.

    @petza914 At the time of this posting, it is unclear whether reserve has been met (or whether seller might be asked to lower reserve).

    So no deal yet.

    Was reserve met/car sold?

  • cheath64 (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    I think the buyer is getting a great deal here! Appears to be a nice clean car with good records and it’s not guards red. Was the reserve met? Either way, congrats to both the seller and buyer

    Congrats to the seller here. Super clean and well presented car and currently knocking on the door of S2 & Turbo money. Winner is going to have a great car. Wish that was me, but crossed by threshold before I even bid :(

    @robertbtx We appreciate the response!

  • robertbtx (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    @Qtrfoil Thanks for the clarification. Although I was a mechanic many, many years ago, I'm not an enthusiast like you folks. That's why I'm selling it. I haven't noticed any wind noise and haven't driven it in the rain. If it's something visible, I can't look now because I'm in Phoenix on business. Sorry if that doesn't fully answer your question.

  • Qtrfoil (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    I only ask questions because I'm interested! :) You're presenting this car well.

  • Qtrfoil (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    Robert, "delamination" for a 944 usually means "Is the glass still glued to the metal frame?" Because of the way the struts push against the glass instead of the metal, there's a chance the glass can become unglued and separate across the top seal especially. You would notice wind noise and leaks in rain. The question is not about the black paint.

  • robertbtx (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    @petza914 You can get a pretty good view of the rear glass in the walkaround video. The black coating I'm referring to is only on the very edges. When I clean the glass, if I wipe all the way to the edge, there are small black specs that come off. I'm sure people have figured out what to do with that, but I'm just leaving it.

  • robertbtx (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    @petza914 Reserve is not visible.

    Haven't noticed any issues with the glass itself, but the black coating on the edges is starting to flake off. I imagine you could just take it all off and either leave it or reapply some type of black coasting.

  • petza914 (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    Nice car. I'm new to P-car market. Is there a way to know what the reserve is set at as the auction is progressing or not until it's made?

    How is the rear glass - any delimitation issues?

    Thanks.

  • Patrick3000 (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    @robertbtx Thank you

  • robertbtx (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    @Patrick3000 I had it changed as soon as I bought it in May 2021. Less than 100 miles since then.

  • Patrick3000 (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    When was the timing belt changed? Please post the date of the service. TY

  • robertbtx (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    I want to thank everyone for the comments and questions. I also want to add a little color to the history of this 944s.

    It belonged to an elderly neighbor who was a highly decorated retired Vietnam vet and also a Golden Gloves coach and referee. I met him when we moved to the area in 2003. I would often help him do things around the house and saw the car in the garage, but didn't ask about for a long time. About 10 years ago, his wife passed and that's when he finally told me they had bought it new for their 30th anniversary. He claimed he drove it all the time, but I honestly never saw it move. I do know he started it frequently and kept it inspected and registered, but I don't think he was comfortable driving it any longer and held onto it for emotional reasons. After he passed, his daughter told me that he had asked her to sell me the car if I wanted it. I bought it and immediately had it flat-bedded to a Porsche shop to go through it from end to end. From the paperwork I saw that it had only about 1500 miles since a timing belt, but that was 18 years ago and I didn't want to take a chance. I then had new tires put on, got the AC compressor replaced, and changed out the HVAC control panel, stereo, front speakers, a window switch, hood and hatch struts, and a few other small things.

    This car is a lot of fun to drive, but I'm not a collector and don't need it gathering dust in my garage. I'm selling it so someone can really appreciate it. Thank you for your interest.

  • CScrogham (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    @robertbtx thanks just a few more questions. Do you have access to a paint meter to verify original paint? If possible a few more photos showing windshield markings to see if a factory glass, and is hood VIN decal still in place on the hood (ie hood been replaced)? It’s very important to me to know paint/panel condition and originality.

    @CScrogham Sorry,but I responded yesterday and it looks like it didn't post. Here's what I know:
    Another neighbor told me that many years ago, something fell out of a truck in front of him and it damaged the hood and windshield. There are receipts for body work but they're not very specific and quite faded. When I got it, there was a scuff in front of the right rear wheel well. I believe he had rubbed the side of the garage. I found a great shop to replace the rock guards and paint the quarter panel. It looks great and matches perfectly. Beyond that, I have no other information. I think most of the car is original paint, but not certain. There are a few dimples jere and there if you look close but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a paintless repair. For a 34-year-old, it looks fantastic.

  • robertbtx (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    @p-talk No, I didn't video that. I can add one but not until Monday. There are no issues.

  • p-talk (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    How does the car perform on cold start? Do you have a cold start video showing the gauge cluster on start-up?

  • robertbtx (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    @Spokayman Thanks for the comment. The bra is held in place by the license plate screws and two bungees underneath. It contacts the car with rubber bumpers. Only takes a screwdriver and a minute to remove. When I took it off to clean and wax, I was amazed that there weren't even slight scuffs under the pads. You can see the instructions in the pics as well as photos with it off.

  • Spokayman (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

    The “S” model is what the 944 should have been all along in my opinion.
    It’s wonderful to have the original owner information and the paperwork.
    @robertbtx is it possible to get more information about the acrylic bra? How is it affixed to the car, and how hard is it to remove?

  • CScrogham (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago
