Up for auction is this 2-owner 1988 Porsche 928 S4 finished in Guards Red over a Black and Beige leather interior. Denoting the final iteration of the Porsche 928, the S4 was debuted with revised bodywork, a rear spoiler, and an improved V8 engine with a 5.0L displacement and 4 valves per cylinder. Purchased by its seller in Texas from its original owner in 1992, this 5-speed 1988 example is said to have been kept in excellent condition over the years with approximately 75k miles now showing on the odometer. Previously listed on PCARMARKET, this 928 is now being offered once more as the initial transaction could not be completed in an agreed-upon timeframe.
Reported to have always been garage-kept and covered, the Guards Red finish on this 928 is said to be all-original and in very nice condition. A couple of small dings have been indicated on the front hood and rear driver’s side quarter panel (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery). This S4 can be distinguished from previous variants by its aerodynamically improved nose and fixed black polyurethane rear spoiler. This example retains its factory equipped “Manhole Cover” wheels which are dressed in older Kumho tires exhibiting ample tread life.
This luxury grand tourer features an accommodating Beige leather interior which is said to be in great shape aside from some minor wear on the driver’s seat. An aftermarket Sony radio has been installed along with upgraded speakers, although the stock speaker grilles have been kept helping maintain an original appearance. The digital clock and interior rear hatch release are nonfunctional; however, the seller confirms all other gauges and accessories to be working properly. The air conditioning has also been serviced with a new compressor, dryer, and expansion valve.
This S4 is powered by a DOHC 4-valve per cylinder 5.0 L V8 engine which is mated to a desirable 5-speed manual transaxle. 320 HP is sent to the rear wheels providing for a 0-60 time of approximately 5.5 seconds and a top speed north of 160 MPH. Proper routine maintenance has been carried out including the following items over the past 25 years amounting to approximately $20,000 in service.
Items included in this sale are the original books, tools, jack, air compressor and spare tire, 1 master key, and a car cover. This stunning S4 is just waiting to be enjoyed by a new caretaker, do not miss out.

Beautiful car especially the interior. So it's been 12+ years since timing belt and water-pump replacement then? These are more of a time/mileage items and these 928s need to be driven (ask me how I know). When was the last coolant flush done? What is the date code on the tires as "older" doesn't give us much to go on. Am I looking at immediately doing TB/WP and tires plus cooling system cleaning/replacement? These are not inexpensive items and may need to be taken into account. Also has there been a clutch replacement? I'm sorry for the many questions but I bought one without asking these questions and I'm looking for another, lesson learned.
@JNasty - Yes, I will post the servicing since 2008. Please give me until later today as still in the midst of my 'day job'. Thank you.
@dbenke can you post service records please or a summary of items and dates from 2008 onward please?
@JNasty - Yes, there has been other regular service and maintenance completed within the last 12 years. 2008 was the timing belt and water pump service. The car is driven <200 miles per year.
@dbenke - no service in the last 12 years?
@allmack @allmack, Timing belt, tensioner and water pumped replaced 3/12/2008. Also replaced steering, A/C and air-pump belts during this maintenance. Service documentation can be provided.
Please provide records on most recent timing belt, water pump service, which were not provided last time.
@tedvarrick @tedvarrick, to answer your question directly, the funds were available but we did not get to actual PPI and exchange of funds for title.
@tedvarrick , thanks for the compliment on the car! Trying not to be biased, it is stunning and must say a gem. Hence, my hesitation to sell the car in the previous auction due to delays in the process on my side. It has a tremendous nostalgia and history with my family and hated to part with it. Now it's time to let it go. The vehicle treated with care. All paint is original. No accidents. All original. Good luck should you pursue.
Good morning - I was (admittedly lurking) watching this car in its previous auction and saw that it sold, as mentioned in the listing. Can you explain what happened - i.e. did the car fail a PPI, did the buyer fail to come up with funds, or something else?
Also if the previous buyer did have a PPI done, do you have a report you could post?
THANK YOU!
P.S. what a stunning car
@hugh522 @hugh522, yes, I noticed this as well in the video. It pegs on start-up so not an issue with the engine temp, just the gauge. Cooling system/fan is working as should.
Is the engine temp gauge inop? It looks pegged at the top of the scale.
Hello, welcome to the auction for the 928 S4 I have owned since 1994. I am the 2nd owner and kept in garage and covered the entire time. My rule was to never drive it in the rain.
Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
