Representing one of only 500 examples built for the U.S. market, this Special Edition 1988 Porsche 924 S (option code 756) was Porsche’s version of a “sports-coupe-for the-masses”, featuring a performance-oriented lightweight design, factory equipped Sport Suspension and a desirable factory sunroof delete.  Having undergone major service items in recent years, this 924 S is now being offered for auction in excellent running condition showing approximately 146k well-documented miles on the odometer.

This 924 S has started life as a Black/A1-varient as the only available color for the US market when new.  It has since been refinished in the traditional Porsche color of Guards Red.  The paint is said to remain in good condition with some typical signs of wear which are outlined in the photo gallery.  The seller notes that an aftermarket passenger side mirror had been previously installed and that stickers have been put in place to cover the area that was left behind.  This 924 S showcases iconic pop-up headlights as well as added 17” chrome Cup wheels in two variants, (driver's side is fitted with 964 Cup 1 wheels and the passenger side is fitted with 993 Cup 2 wheels) which come wrapped in healthy Ohtsu tires dated from 2018.

This Special Edition features a unique black leatherette interior with lightweight burgundy carpeting and the signature grey corduroy pin-striped seating.  In the name of weight savings, this 924 S also features a desirable factory sunroof delete which also helps to improve structural rigidity.  A 5-speaker sound system is currently installed with an additional aftermarket Bazooka bass speaker.  All gauges and electronics are stated to be fully functional and the cabin is said to be in excellent shape with only a small tear present on the driver’s seat.

This 924 S is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5 L inline 4-cylinder engine, also found in the 944.  This power plant sends approximately 160 HP to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission.  The factory equipped M030 Sport Suspension package received an adjustable coil overs suspension in the front along with larger antiroll bars in the front and rear, a lower ride height, and factory Koni Sport shocks in the rear which have been replaced with upgraded KYB gas adjust Exel shocks.  In 2017, a major service was carried out which included the following items:

  • 944 Turbo Water Pump Upgrade
  • New Seals
  • Timing Belt
  • Balance Shaft Belt
  • Spark Plugs
  • Ignition Rotor
  • Starter
  • Power Steering Reservoir
  • New Hoses
  • Powerflex Front Sway Bar Bushings
  • Fluids and Filters
  • Rear KYB Adjustable Shocks

In 2018 the camshaft was also serviced with new seals, o-rings and gaskets.  The seller notes that Zimmerman front rotors have been recently installed along with Pagid brake pads all around.  With a new battery and recent service, this 924 S is said to be in excellent running order.  Detailed images of the vehicle's engine and undercarriage are available in the photo gallery.

The sale of this Special Edition 924 S will include a set of two keys, original books and a collection of service records.  Please note that the coins and brochure are not included with the sale.  A true driver’s car, this rare 924 S SE represents an incredible opportunity to own one of the best sleeper Porsches sold in the U.S. in the 1980s.

@maybeillbuyit @maybeillbuyit. The 1988 924S-SE came with 15" phone dial wheels. These wheels were on the car when I bought it, receipts of wheels are posted, and although heavier with the 17" the car is much faster than the 87 924S I had which was pristine at 87k miles and I also sold here last month.

Amazing car really. I agree with the plan to focus on the mechanical rather than wheels. Out of interest what wheels did these SEs come with?

    Wow! That car sounds tight.
Someone definitely took their time taking care of this rare beauty, these are hard to come by.
Too bad there's no room in my garage.
Yes, the car is the wrong color, and the wheels are different, but the car seems to run beautifully, which is the most important thing. The car can always be repainted and those wheels are heavy, so changing them out would be high on the list, so it doesn't much matter that they are different.
    Good luck to the seller!
Someone is going to get a really great and rare Special Edition 924 S.

@Porsche911 These cars only came with a light weight manual plastic driver's side mirror. Porsche saved 7lbs by not using the usual electric flag mirrors. When I purchased the car the previous owner told me he installed an after market side mirror and his wife kept breaking it off backing out of the garage. All that was on there was the base, so I removed it.

  • Porsche911 (registered bidder) 4 years, 6 monthsago

Why was the right side mirror removed?

  • JBoxerGT2 (seller) 4 years, 6 monthsago

@Inline4 Also, I will have the staff upload pictures of every receipt , especially the three that I do have of the wheels . I do have the coin but it's not part of the sale. I hunted for years to find one and at this time I plan on keeping it. The pamphlets and factory Special Edition brochures are pics I obtained a long time ago, they are being used on this sale to add info about the car, as many people don't even know these cars even exist. The 924S-SE you could say, it is the 1st Club Sport transaxle made by Porsche before the lighter weight Porsche 968 Club Sport.

  • JBoxerGT2 (seller) 4 years, 6 monthsago

@Inline4 Service manual did not come with the car when I bought it. There are 2 receipts for the cup wheels. You are correct, Cup 1s and Cup 2 wheels came just like that with the car. To me the wheels were not important, and I invested time and money on the immediate mechanical restoration. I purchased brand new tires as you can see on the week and year of production, from Discount Tires. The story as to why they are different I just don't know. They are all 17x7 with new OHTSU. FP0612 A/S 205-50-17 Tires purchased 11/5/2018 All I have is the owner's manual and the Porsche vinyl cover that comes from factory. Hope this information helps. Thank you for looking!

Why does the car have two different sets of wheels fitted? Left side has Cup1 and the right side Cup2 alloys ?.
Is the service manual still with the car? And what about the coin?

  • JBoxerGT2 (seller) 4 years, 6 monthsago

Also more engine detailed pics to come. Thx!
