Finished in Guards Red over a black interior, this 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa features a desirable G50 5-speed manual gearbox paired with its air-cooled 3.2-liter engine. It was purchased new by an attorney in Fort Worth, Texas, and was acquired by the current owner from a Porsche dealership out of Fresno, California in 1992. Having been kept tucked away in storage over the past 20 years, this classic 911 Targa is now being offered for auction on behalf of its longtime owner out of California.
This 911 comes finished in Guards Red (L80K) with a removable black roof panel, Targa band, and wraparound glass rear window. A Carrera-style rear spoiler is fitted at the rear and the car rides on a set of factory 15” Fuchs wheels dressed in older Pirelli P600 tires. Some small dings, swirls, and chips are depicted throughout the exterior as well as a scratch along the driver’s side door, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
Inside, the cabin remains true to its factory appearance with the original Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46 radio equipped. Accessories include a power-adjustable driver’s seat, electric windows, cruise control, and a heated rear window. The interior is described to be in remarkably good condition with few signs of wear, although the front hood struts and engine lid struts need replacement along with the speedometer transmission sensor which is included in the sale. The odometer previously failed and was repaired by Palo Alto Speedometer and the true mileage remains unknown. The original radio is also inoperable.
Up to 217 HP is sent to the rear wheels by an air-cooled 3.2-liter flat-six engine paired with a 5-speed G50 manual transmission. A full service is recommended as the vehicle recently emerged from storage after two decades and no recent maintenance records are available. A recent driving video is provided below.
This sale will include the original owner’s manuals, maintenance booklet, toolkit, air compressor, and a clean title.

@gkp200 I just uploaded a copy of the smog test done on 2/23/2018 that shows the mileage as 74,465. This should confirm that the CarFax record of 132,849 miles on 2/20/2014 and the entry of 230,132 miles on 7/26/2018 are simply wrong.
Additionally, a quick Google search of CarFax reliability shows a 3 out of 5 star rating for reliability . Not very good in my opinion!

@gmbarclay2022 I don't have access to a lift, so pictures of the undercarriage will be difficult, but I'll do my best to get a video of the frunk uploaded on Monday.
Thank you.

@gmbarclay2022 I responded to the mileage question on the comment just prior to your question. No, there has not been a compression or leak down test. The car is located in Fresno, California and is available for inspection.
Thank you.

can you upload pictures of the under carriage and frunk with carpet removed?
Carfax says 232k miles. Has there been a compression test and leak down test?
@gkp200 @gkp200
Thank you for the question and I don't have a good explanation other than those two mileage reports are simply incorrect.
I'm uploaded 2 photos that show the mileage on the speedometer as 74,465 when it was sent to Palo Alto Speedometer for repairs on 5/13/2022 and when the car was smog tested on 5/12/2022.
Additionally, if you do the math on those mileage reports between 3/13/2012 and 7/26/2018 it shows a total of 156,317 miles during that 6.5 year period, that's an average of 24,048/year! Based on the condition of the car, I just don't believe it and the owner of the car tells me it was in storage and on Non-Op for most of that time.
It's also curious that there is no mileage shown for several of the CarFax entries.
In the end, you will just need to decide for yourself what you believe the actual mileage is based on the photos and videos.

Carfax shows mileage of 130k in 2014 and 230k in 2018. Any explanation for this high mileage?
As mentioned, the mileage is unknown for two reasons.
1st: The odometer gears were broken (very common problem) and the odometer failed to register mileage after reaching the 74,500 miles currently showing.
2nd: The speedometer was repaired by Palo Alto Speedometer on May 15th, 2022. They replaced the broken odometer gears and also the speedometer electronics and the speedometer was placed back in the car.
Unfortunately, the speedometer is now only working after the car has been driven for several miles. Palo Alto speedometer was contacted and they said the problem is now a faulty speedometer sensor (which is located on the side of the transmission) and it will need to be replaced(the speedometer is electronic, not cable driven).
The replacement sensor was purchased and is included in the sale, but I do not know how to replace it.
As I mentioned above, the speedometer and odometer both now work correctly after the car has been driven for several miles, but after sitting overnight the car needs to be driven again before they start working.
I think the best way to estimate the mileage on this car is by looking at the condition of the interior, especially the carpet in the foot wells and the leather seats. My estimate is that it's easily under 100,000, but that is just my estimate and you will need to make your own judgement of the actual mileage.
Thank you for the question.

Do receipts and service records suggest mileage is legitimate?

Welcome to our auction of this beautiful 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa. Some of you may recognize me as the guy who sells replica Speedsters, but in this case I am helping my long time friend sell his original Porsche. We will both be available and happy to answer any questions you may have about the car.
