This European-market 1988 Mercedes-Benz 420SL is finished in Diamond Blue Metallic over Royal Blue leather. Produced from 1971 to 1989, the R107 was the first V8-powered SL-Class, with the 420SL debuting at the 1985 Frankfurt Auto Show as a replacement for the 380SL in Europe. It features a larger 4.2L M116 V8, with just over 2,000 examples built during its four-year production run. Originally ordered through Mercedes-Benz’s Mönchengladbach branch in Germany, this SL was equipped with full power accessories, heated seats, an automatic transmission, and a matching removable hardtop. Having remained under single ownership in Texas, this rare 420SL is now being offered for auction once again on PCARMARKET with less than 24k miles showing on the odometer.
This SL comes finished in Diamond Blue Metallic (355) with a matching removable hardtop and a retractable Dark Blue soft top. Additional equipment includes European-market bumpers and headlights, fog lamps, a third brake light, and factory 15″ Gullideckel alloy wheels dressed in a set of Uniroyal tires. The convertible top was replaced, and the seller notes the hood and driver's side front fender were refinished due to fading of the original paint. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is trimmed in Royal Blue (272) leather with matching carpets and burl wood inlays throughout the dashboard and center console. Factory equipment includes power windows, door locks, and mirrors, a cassette stereo, air conditioning, cruise control, and heated seats. The seller confirms that all gauges, lights, and accessories remain fully functional.
Power comes from a 4.2L M116 V8 engine which produces up to 215 HP and 239 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 4G-Tronic automatic transmission. The R107 was factory-equipped with power steering, a fully independent suspension, and power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes. The car is accompanied by service records from new and is said to remain unmodified.
This sale will include original German license plates, service records, owner's manuals, a full-size spare, and a clean title. One of the least common R107 models and an incredibly rare sight on U.S. roads, this sparingly driven 420SL awaits its next caretaker.
The seller would like you to know: "Very few 420sl ever made compared to 560sl or 450sl. This car only has 23,000 miles, is in excellent condition, runs, and drives like a new convertible top looks brand new."
