An M-tuned version of the E24 6-Series grand tourer, the original BMW M6 features aerodynamic spoilers, larger front brakes, lowered sport suspension, a 5-speed manual transmission, a limited-slip differential, and a 3.5-liter inline-six engine. This 1988 example came factory-finished in Cinnabar Red over Lotus White leather upholstery, including optional heated power-adjustable front seats. Purchased new and driven sparingly by the current owner in Washington over the last 37 years, this remarkably well-preserved M6 is now being offered for auction with just over 18k miles showing on the odometer.

Featuring sleek bodywork designed by Paul Bracq, the original M6 is distinguished from other E24 variants by its larger front air dam, trunk lid spoiler, and 16” BBS alloy wheels. This M6 is finished in Cinnabar Red, and the paint is said to remain in excellent original condition apart from some small chips on the lower front chin spoiler. Equipment includes chrome trim pieces, quad handlamps, an M6 grille badge, integrated fog lights, dual power mirrors, a sunroof, and dual center-mounted tailpipes. The seller adds that the rare Michelin TRX GT-B tires were purchased new in 2017 and were kept in climate-controlled storage before being recently mounted. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin is appointed with Lotus White leather upholstery and matching carpets. Accessories include heated and power-adjustable front seats, individual rear seats, a four-spoke leather steering wheel, power windows and door locks, front and rear air conditioning, an onboard computer, M-specific instrumentation, and a factory cassette stereo. The seller notes that all gauges and accessories are fully functional, and some minor stains are present on the carpeting.

Factory-rated at 256 HP, the 3.5-liter S38 inline-six engine features dual overhead camshafts, six individual throttle bodies, and Bosch Motronic fuel injection. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The M6 features larger front brakes than a standard E24 6-Series, along with a lower and stiffer suspension. The seller indicates that the original owner kept all service documentation dating back to the initial purchase and that the car has been run on ethanol-free 92-octane fuel, which was periodically drained and treated with a stabilizer.

This sale will include the original owner’s manuals, a window sticker, a toolkit, a spare tire, a battery trickle charger, sales documents, service records, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This is a special opportunity to own a real time capsule of a BMW owned by an incredibly detail-oriented owner.  Every receipt, every service, every issue documented.  This is as close as you will likely get to being able to turn back time to 1988 and buy a new BMW M6, as I can imagine.  The car is beyond impressive and let the photos and records speak for themselves.”

@95viper thanks for a very intelligent question. To answer your question, if the car runs through my dealership as a consignment, then I do show up as a transitory owner as it goes to the next person. Since my seller has 'title in hand' in his own name, I'm sure we can both be amenable to doing the transaction in a way that is beneficial to the next owner. If you win the car, we can discuss that matter in full. Thanks!

RumbleAuto, Would this be considered a private sale on the title? Meaning would the owner sign as opposed to the dealer?

I ask because there are a few states where the buyer does not pay tax on a private sale but does via a dealer. I wonder how the dmv treats a sale under consignment.

Thank you very much to the individuals who came out to see this magnificent BMW in person today. To paraphrase the independent professional appraiser who came to see it on behalf of a potential bidder "this example definitely shows just as described". I agree wholeheartedly, and hope that it's obvious that this isn't just another above average example of E24 M6. Cars of this caliber and provenence only come around every so often, so don't miss out on your chance to add it to your collection.

@JMarion these are the standard world bunkers for 88 and 89. They were not tucked. The 87 US bunkers were diving boards and the rest of the world had the smaller euro bumpers.

  • mwein5 (registered bidder) 2 days, 2 hoursago

@JMarion 1987 was the last year of the diving board front bumpers. What you see here is the stock bumper for an ‘88 M6.

So how does the inspector get in touch with you to arrange time?

  • DocHoliday (registered bidder) 2 days, 3 hoursago

@RumbleAuto So how does the inspector get in touch with you? I tried sharing cell but I guess that’s a no from Pcar(sorry my first time)?

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 days, 3 hoursago

@DocHoliday - Hello there, the car can be PPI'd on-site at the owner's garage, absolutely. Please use the Contact Seller feature so we can discuss what you'd like to have done.

  • DocHoliday (registered bidder) 2 days, 4 hoursago

    Can’t *

  • DocHoliday (registered bidder) 2 days, 4 hoursago

Hi, beautiful M6 to say the least, if possible to send a PPI person for the car? Apparently we can talk in person so please let me know how to arrange this

  • JMarion (registered bidder) 2 days, 4 hoursago

That interior is stunning. I'd be afraid to sit in it. Looks like someone drilled out the bumper shocks and pushed them in to get rid of the diving birds. Pretty old trick from back in the day.

@Jordan5 - There are now 12 new photos (taken this evening) showcasing the condition of the upper dashboard in the gallery for your viewing pleasure. Thanks!

Attention all bidders, I have painstakingly prepared all the service records and uploaded them to the gallery. There was no feasible way to keep them in order with all the editing and maneuvering required to assemble them, so I apologize to all in advance since the dates are not in order. That being said, you can definitely see that this example is the finest you are likely to find and we have everything to show you.

Thanks for the bids and interest so far, and I'll do my best to get additional content as you request it.

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 3 days, 4 hoursago

@Jordan5 - please tell me exactly what you want to see and I'll do my best to get it. If none of the 300+ photos show you what you want to see, I definitely want to know precisely what you'd like to see. Thanks!

@RumbleAuto Can you please send better pictures of the Dash?
    Thanks

@PCARMARKET_MODERATOR The car has always been located in WA state. It appears that PCAR has already corrected that without my asking.

The listing has been adjusted to reflect that this M6 is offered for auction out of Washington.

  • lee88 (registered bidder) 3 days, 13 hoursago

Beautiful M6. I understand the original owner was in Washington state, but the listing mentions the car being sold from California. Where is it presently located? Thanks.

Hello and welcome to my latest auction on PCARMarket.

This immaculate 1988 BMW M6 has just over 18k miles and is a legitimate ONE OWNER example from new. It is finished in the desirable shade of Cinnabar Red, and has Lotus White leather upholstery. It is an unbelievably well kept example and has enjoyed a quiet life with its only owner. Please look at the service records (once added) to the gallery to see what has happened to it in his care as it is very well documented. There are no accidents ever to this example and I would challenge you to find a better one as it would not be easy to do.

This BMW will be available for viewing this coming week for any locals who want to check it out, but careful planning by appointment is required since it resides away from my dealership. Please feel free to use the Contact Seller button to schedule time to come see it or for any other questions.

One thing that needs to be stated is that if you are the winner of this auction, I do expect that you will both make payment and transport arrangements within 7 days of the auctions conclusion. Although this may seem unnecessary to say, I have found that some buyers need a bit of a reminder about the urgency of buying a vehicle and the expectation of post-auction storage. I am not setup as a storage facility, so please factor this into your bidding and communication strategy.

Happy Bidding to all on this fun and immaculate BMW which I hope finds an enthusiastic and appreciative new owner by auction's end. I literally cannot remember seeing another car from 1988 that is in this type of condition, so please let the photos tell the full story of this amazing automobile.

    Steve @ Rumble Auto
