The E24 was BMW’s original 6-Series grand touring car, with the M6 version carrying an S38 inline-six engine derived from the legendary BMW M1 race car. Of the 5,855 examples built in total, only 1,767 were imported to North America. This 1988 example was delivered in Black over a Silver Grey Nappa leather interior and was first registered in Illinois and spent time in Wisconsin, Texas, and New York before being acquired by the seller in 2021. Benefitting from a recent service including a valve adjustment, oil change, and new front brakes, this 1988 BMW M6 is now being offered at auction out of California showing just under 77k miles on the odometer.
The exterior is finished in Black (086) with grey and white pinstriping. Exterior features include a front air dam with integrated fog lamps, projector headlights, chrome-trimmed safety bumpers, polished window surrounds, a rear trunk spoiler, M6 badging, and a dual-tipped center exit exhaust. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. This M6 retains factory BBS 16” cross-spoke metric wheels mounted with an older set of period-correct Michelin TRX tires.
The cabin features Silver Grey Nappa “halfline” leather upholstery which includes hand-stitched Nappa leather on the seats, door panels, center console, glove box door, headliner, sun visors, and door pillars, contrasted by a darker grey dashboard and upper door panel trim. Standard features include power seats with driver’s memory, air conditioning, an onboard computer, a rear center console, a cassette deck, and a power sunroof. The seller reports the original floormats and carpeting remain in excellent condition and notes a small crack where the dashboard meets the instrument cluster. A short shift kit and BMW Business AM/FM/CD radio were installed under previous ownership.
The E24 M6 is powered by an S38 3.5-liter 24-valve inline-six engine producing up to 256 HP at 6,500 RPM. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission, allowing the M6 to accelerate from 0-60 MPH in under 7 seconds while reaching a top speed of nearly 160 MPH. Compared with the standard 6-Series of the time, the M6 received larger brakes and anti-roll bars as part of its BMW Motorsport treatment. The CARFAX report shows a consistent history of maintenance, and the seller reports a recent service was completed in September of 2022 which included a valve adjustment, an oil and filter change, new front lower control arms, and new front brakes.
This sale will include a clean title, a complete factory toolkit, and some service records.
