BMW's original M3, the E30, was intended as a homologation car to satisfy Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) production requirements and would go on to become one of the most iconic sports cars of all time. This 1988 BMW M3 was ordered in Alpine White over a black interior with M-Tech tricolor fabric and was acquired by the seller in April 2019. Under previous ownership, the four-cylinder S14 engine was fitted with a Sport Evo 2.5-liter crankshaft, Schrick camshafts, JE pistons, Pauter rods, a machined and ported head, and a new timing chain. The car was also repainted, reupholstered, and fitted with a DTM-style carbon airbox an Alpha-N ECU, a DME chip, new fuel injectors, ST sway bars, and a Z3 steering rack. Recently receiving a full fluid service and ceramic coating of the exterior, this 1988 BMW E30 M3 is now being offered at auction by the seller out of Florida showing around 150k miles on the odometer.
The exterior is finished in Alpine White (300), and was stripped down to bare metal before being repainted in its factory color in 2018. The seller notes all original VIN tags remain in place. Details specific to the E30 M3 include widened boxed fenders, model-specific bumpers and rocker panels, and a fixed rear wing. All aerodynamic components were constructed from plastic to save weight, and all body panels are unique to the M3 with the exception of the hood and roof panels. This example has been fitted with Euro-spec Hella “smiley” ellipsoid headlights, Euro-spec clear side markers, clear turn signals, and brake cooling ducts which replace the factory fog lamps. The seller notes this M3 has been professionally ceramic coated, and detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. The 15” basketweave wheels were refinished under previous ownership and are mounted with a set of newer Michelin tires.
The interior has been reupholstered in black with M-Technic striped fabric inserts on the seats and door panels, along with new black carpeting. Modifications include an Alcantara-wrapped M-Tech II steering wheel, red safety belts, an Alcantara parking brake handle, and an aftermarket Pioneer stereo. Amenities consist of an onboard computer, an M-branded VDO instrument cluster, an M dead pedal, a power-operated sunroof, and a power-adjustable driver’s side mirror.
This E30 is equipped with a 2.3.-liter S14 inline four-cylinder engine which has been rebuilt with a Sport Evo 2.5-liter crankshaft, JE pistons, Pauter rods, and Schrick camshafts. The head was machined and ported with larger valves, and a new timing chain, guides, and valve springs. Additionally, the vehicle was fitted with a DTM-style carbon fiber airbox and Alpha-N ECU, a DME chip, new fuel injectors, aftermarket exhaust headers, a catted mid-pipe, and an aluminum radiator. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission and a factory limited-slip differential. Further modifications include Bilstein shocks, new springs, front and rear ST sway bars, replacement rear shock mounts, new subframe bushings, and rear sway bar mounting tabs, all completed under previous ownership. The seller reports that regular maintenance is up-to-date, and a full fluid service was performed in anticipation of the sale.
This sale will include a clean title, a service manual, a factory toolkit, and over 100 documents related to the restoration and service.
