Now up for auction is this 1987 Porsche 928 S4 finished in Silver Metallic over a Burgundy leather interior.  The 1987 model year saw one of the greatest evolutions for Porsche’s iconic 928 grand tourer with the introduction of the S4, updated with an aerodynamically improved body and new 5.0L V8 engine with four valves per cylinder.  This launch year example was first registered in Illinois and had been under the care of its last owner since 1994. Showcasing a rare and highly desirable 5-speed manual transmission along with an optional limited-slip differential, this 928 S4 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Iowa showing just over 123k miles on the odometer.

This 928 comes finished in Silver Metallic (L980), one of the earliest and most traditional Porsche colors first offered on the 356 in 1954.  Compared to its predecessor, the 928 S4 featured newly revised bodywork with an aerodynamically improved nose, sill moldings, larger taillight units, and a raised black polyurethane rear spoiler.  This example rides on a set of chrome 17” Cup-style wheels dressed in Bridgestone Potenza tires from 2014, and the original set of 16” alloy wheels is said to accompany the sale as well. The seller reports minor road-going imperfections on the nose as well as holes drilled into the front bumper for license plate mounting.  The rear bumper has also been replaced. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin is trimmed in Burgundy full leather upholstery with matching carpets and optional heated seats. Other features include full power accessories, a sunroof, a rear window wiper, a digital clock, and vintage Alpine radio.  Some cracks are depicted on the dashboard above the instrument cluster as well as some discoloration of the driver seat, indentation on the center armrest, and faded markings on some of the buttons. All gauges and accessories are said to be working properly including the A/C which has been recently serviced.

The 5.0L 32-valve V8 engine delivers as much as 320 HP and 317 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission and factory optioned limited-slip differential. The seller reports a binder of receipts was kept by its prior caretaker of nearly 30 years, and the car has been recently serviced with a new brake master cylinder. Some invoices are provided for reference in the gallery.

This sale will include a set of keys, owner's manuals, service records, and a clean title.

@Dundertaker Indeed it is! If you’re 86.5 is a five speed with only 38,000 miles, you may want to consider selling it now. I just sold my 86.5 five speed with 44,000 miles on it a few months ago on Bringatrailer for $77,000. I would assume yours is worth at least that.

@Concours It's looking good for 120+K on the ODO, but logic would dictate that the car was painted at some point. If you've owned 50 you'd know better than me at 3...but everyone I've owned (S3's both were repainted one Single Stage Black and one 2 stage Garnet Red and an 83 2 stage that has a "Patina" that is so excessive it shows metal through it) I'd be thrilled to have one that's this presentable, 5 speed, interesting color our and inside...etc....new owner has some work to do, but a good looking car and looks well taken care of. My 86.5 with 38K on the ODO didn't look this good. Appears RNM...too bad. The market is crazy right now.

@Dundertaker Hi Dundertaker. Oh yes I’m very aware of everything about these cars as I’ve owned well over 50 of them since the mid-80’s. That’s why I was inquiring about the option codes which the seller was unable to provide off of the car due to the Dynamat being installed in the cargo area. What I was basing my assumption on about the adhesive was that the picture he posted in the photo gallery of all this cars options did not list option 418 as one of them. Of course I know exactly how these side moldings are applied out of the factory, but since I did not see 418 listed in his photo gallery I was simply hopeful that someone over the years had perhaps taken a factory set of side moldings and applied them with adhesive. Nothing more than wishful thinking on my part but thank you for verifying that 418 is indeed a factory option on this car ?

  • Dundertaker 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Concours Vin Check on 928oc.com confirms it had M418 side moldings (most cars did) and they are not "stuck on" just with adhesive, there are holes/attachment points in the panels along with the adhesive. Look it up on Rennlist if you want to see how they're attached and how you appropriately fill them in should you repaint the car and wish to delete them. It's a highly optioned car and has everything described and more. It would have had a RENO SQR when new (someone asked about original radio)

@Concourse ... Todd, able to get in touch with the previous owner. the original radio is not available. the body side moldings are presumed to be adhesive attached. they were present on the car when he purchased it in 1993. no answer regarding the option tag .. dyna mat would have to be cut out, not willing to do that . Good Luck today!

  • Concours (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@khart I’ll look forward to hearing back from you on both of those inquiries. Thanks again for your expedited responses. Todd

  • khart (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@concours ... i believe the moldings are on with adhesive tape. the option tag you are asking for a photo of is covered. in the cars history it was insulated with "dynamat" in the rear compartment. in the morning i will have one of my staff try to carefully pull up the mat to see if the tag is there. will do it first thing! still waiting to hear from the previous owner regarding the radio

Can you please take a picture of the option code sticker located underneath the right hand side of the rear hatch carpet. I would like to verify if option code 418 is on there. That's the option code for the "protective side moldings". It doesn't show 418 listed on the paperwork you have a photo of showing the cars options. If it's not on there then I suspect those side moldings are simply put on with double sided tape. This would also provide an explanation as to why the moldings were repainted as you stated. I would much prefer a car without side moldings as I'm sure 90% of other buyers would as well. Lastly, do you have the original Blaupunkt Reno 2 stereo? Thanks. Todd

Yes .. the first belly pan. Regarding the moldings, you would not know they were refinished if I hadn't told you. Not sure what the issue is with the photo of the wheels ... have sent them 3 times, in the process of contacting pcarmarket staff to get them posted.

  • Concours (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@khart Thank you for the expedited response. Is there any give in the clutch whatsoever? Does it still pull strong and catch immediately? So to confirm, you have the first belly pan (the black one), but not the secondary belly pan (the silver one)? What is the quality of the respray of the body side moldings? Is this something you were just told was done and you would have never known otherwise, or is the quality subpar? Not trying to be nitpicky, but I'm looking for an example that can be turned into my username with not too much effort lol. I see the additional uploaded pics of everything except the 16 inch wheels. I would really like to see those. Thanks.

  • khart (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Concours ... Lets see if I can get all the answers handled. Photos have been uploaded showing the 16" wheel, spare tire, & tool kit. The kit is not complete. The original compressor is not with the car. The front under tray is in our possession . Timing belt / water pump were done at 78k, receipts included. Clutch disc has not been replaced by the previous owner ( it was purchased by them in 1993 w/ 67k miles ). No records of worked performed prior to that. A new clutch master cylinder & slave have been replaced. The original window sticker is not available. The paint is original with the exception of the rear bumper & the body side moldings have been refinished. The spot on the left front wheel opening is black tape, removed it shows a chip that we photographed and posted. The only only cracks shown regarding the dash, is with the instrument pod cover. The remainder of the dash is good. I'm unable to answer the question about the radio. The original is not in my possession. I'm reaching out to the previous owner to see if it might been with him. Will update you once I know ... Hope that covers your questions

Good morning. Beautiful example you have here. A few questions. Have you taken paint meter readings of every panel on the car and if so, is the entire car original paint with the exception of the front and rear bumper covers? Is there some sort of paint chip on the driver side lower portion of the front bumper cover directly in front of the front tire? Do you have the original stereo? Do you have the spare tire, spare tire compressor and all of the factory tools? Do you have the front and rear belly pans? They’re missing in the pictures but curious to know if you have them in your possession? When was the last timing belt and water pump change, what mileage and what year and do you have documentation for that? When was the last clutch replacement and do you have documentation for that? Can you please post pictures of the original 16 inch slotted disc wheels? Do you have the original window sticker in your possession? Are there any cracks on the main dashboard other than those between the defroster vents? Sorry for all the questions but I am legitimately interested in the car and need to know these things prior to bidding. Thank you so much. Todd
