Up for auction is an extremely well-preserved 52k-mile 1987 Porsche 928 S4 finished in gorgeous Marine Blue Metallic over a Linen interior. This 928 was originally sold new from Paul Miller Porsche in New Jersey and remained with the original owner until 2010. The second and third owners of the car had it under their care until late 2018, at which point it was acquired by the selling dealer.
The seller states that the Marine Blue factory paint is all original with the exception of a professional respray of the front bumper. As shown in the gallery photos, the car shows minor wear, well-below normal for its age and mileage. The seller notated a small ding just above the drivers-side door lock as well as a few minor chips. Detailed photos of these imperfections are provided.
The original Linen leather seats are contrasted beautifully by the blue dash and factory floor mats. Condition mimics the exterior with only minor (typical) wear on the drivers-side bolster as well as some minor hairline cracks on the upper portion of the dash. With the exception of a Kenwood cassette head unit, the car remains unmodified from new. This 928 was delivered with the following factory options:
- Seat heating left/right
- Monterey Reno radio
- Type designated on rear end
- Platinum anodized wheels
- Protective side moldings
- Hi-Fi sound system
- Amplifier system
- Driver's seat lumbar support
- Left seat with positron and lumbar
- Passenger seat lumbar support

A rear spoiler and rear windscreen wiper were also factory installed.
Powering this autobahn cruiser is its original 5.0L V8 and power is delivered to the rear wheels via an automatic transmission. Retaining its original 5.0L V8 and automatic transmission, this autobahn cruiser is stated to be in excellent running condition. A timing belt service was performed several years ago at 51k miles under the care of the second owner. The seller stated that he has scheduled an inspection to verify the current condition of the timing belt, results of which will be uploaded to this listing as soon as possible. In addition, the DME (engine control computer) as well as the climate control unit have recently been professionally rebuilt. The seller added the following notes as per a recent PPI:
- There is minor seepage from the oil pan gasket and valve cover gasket
- The undercarriage covers are missing
- Hood shocks function but are nearing end of life
- Minor heater valve leak
The stock 16″ wheels were professionally refinished and are mounted to a pair of 225/50 Yokohama AVID tires in front and 245/45 Fuzion ZRI tires in the rear, all of which have a healthy amount of tread remaining.
Accompanying the sale are service records since 2010, factory books, original toolkit, spare tire assembly, and a clean/accident-free Carfax report.

want this in a bad way. just bought a 911 but this is def on my list (928).
As mentioned in the PCARMarket write up, I had a local German marque specialist inspect and document the current condition of the timing belt. I've forwarded a scanned copy of that invoice to PCARMarket to upload to the auction page, but here's the mechanic's quote from the report:
"Customer requests inspection of timing belt and advise its condition. Remove air intake ducting, ignition wires, distributor cap and rotor and driver side timing cover. No visible cracks forming, belt surface is smooth with no chunks missing and no broken teeth on the belt. Age cannot be determined, but see no clear evidence timing belt should be replaced."

@Stingray72454 - The door ding may be a candidate for paintless dent repair, but the local repair guy I trust is currently on vacation and, as photo 26 shows, it's relatively minor.
While I try to disclose everything I know about a car as best I can, I understand that trusting a seller without comprehensive documentation is the toughest part of the online marketplace world we live in. Unfortunately when you're dealing with 30+ year old cars, more often than not that documentation isn't as thorough as we'd all prefer. It's my hope that the inspection being done as we speak can help assuage some of your concerns. Also, what I like about the PCARMarket format is that if the car doesn't sell at auction, it goes into the Deal Tank, which in all likelihood will give potential buyers the ability to have a third party PPI performed before they make an offer.
I suppose one could make the argument that I should have done a timing belt/water pump service as soon as I got the car, and I do that type of preemptive work on a number of cars I sell, but when that happens the price also goes up, and the reserve on this one is fair-market appropriate for exactly how it's presented, without an unrealistic dealer mark-up. A good portion of buyers would prefer to pay a little bit less and dial in a car to their specifications themselves or have a shop that they know and trust perform the work, rather than see an invoice from a shop they don't know on the other side of the country.

@Stingray72454 also the receipt that does list the timing belt goes to 2010 which mean it’s almost aged out anyways as it’s my understanding it’s 10 years or 50k

Just posted PPI from an independent source it would help people with the clean cars get more money and be less nerve racking for everyone bidding cause this auction is over shorty and it’s hard to spend money on a PPI every time you bid on a car you don’t even know if you’ll win ? So is there a clear receipt for the full timing belt service cause without a properly documented service I have to assume it has not been done it is just too dangerous to just take someone’s work like that and end up with a blown engine
@Stingray72454 - It wasn't a buyer's PPI, it was my own. I had a friend's mechanic inspect the car before I acquired it and he reported back to me over the phone. He did it as a favor, so there was no written report. His findings were that there wasn't much to complain about (I did buy the car, after all) and that it clearly hadn't been neglected. In addition to what the PCARMarket listing writer included, he found the window buttons were intermittently/briefly a little sticky (have yet to have had a 928 where this wasn't the case), the smog pump and check valve were a little noisy but operating correctly, and the front and rear brakes had 6-7mm remaining. Not a comprehensive PPI, but potentially helpful information. Be happy to schedule a more comprehensive third party PPI for any interested buyers.
You said someone had a pre-purchase inspection and didn’t but the car can you upload the full copy of that inspection?
@Stingray72454 - Per the wording on the invoice and the prior owner's recollection, it wasn't the odometer that needed repair, it was the speedometer. I realize components for both are housed in the same unit, but this issue was apparently related to a circuit board that needed repair for the speedo, not the odometer failing.
@TomFuelery @RideQuality yes there is no way that was a full timing belt service for $272 I’ll hold my bid till we get some clarity. Also I see that this car had an odometer repair how long was the odometer broken ?
@Stingray72454 - The PCARMarket auction description is somewhat incorrect - it wasn't a timing belt service, it was installing a new timing belt and water pump (among other things) at 51,207 miles, and the belt was then re-tensioned 9 months later. We can't confirm this, but in looking at the original invoice that includes the new timing belt and water pump, it seems clear that the commissioning owner either did something in trade or had a significant credit with the shop performing the work, as almost nothing on the invoice seemed to cost him anything ($272.19).
@TomFuelery @RideQuality I am sorry but I just see a receipt for tensioning not for a timing belt service what was the total cost for the repair you are referring too ?

I don’t see a copy of the timing belt service is this hearsay that the timing belt was done or do Do you have a copy of the timing belt service you can upload ?
@trimalc - I'm not sure I'm seeing the bonnet fit issues you are, but I can say without question that the car has never been in any accidents. The front bumper was resprayed by the previous owner solely to address a scrape on the lower portion of the valence caused by going through a deep dip in an intersection too fast. We couldn't get an inspection scheduled at any of the reputable local shops until tomorrow (Monday) AM PST, but we'll make sure to get the results uploaded to the auction page as soon as possible or emailed to those that have inquired, probably by early PM tomorrow PST.
@Stingray72454 - The dash cracks can definitely be fixed by a good leather/vinyl repair guy. I've found that if you really want it done correctly, it's worth paying to have the windshield taken out to give the repair guy plenty of room to address the issues from multiple angles. Adds to the cost, but it makes a huge difference and is obviously still a lot cheaper than replacing the dash.
The bonnet doesn't look as though it fits quite right. Is this as a result of the front end accident that required the bumper respray? Also is the result of the inspection ready yet?
Will the crack on the dash be able to be fixed by a leather / vinyl repair guy or does this entire dash’s need to be replaced ?

this is the first Porsche I ever wanted to buy. I had my mother pull over the car when seeing one for sale on the side of the road when I was 10. for people that have porsche in their blood, they should have a 928.
