Now available for auction is this 1987 Porsche 924 S finished in Guards Red.  Reintroduced in 1986 as the "924 S", Porsche’s original transaxle sports car was significantly revamped with an improved engine, braking system, and suspension borrowed from the 944 model.  This 1987 example came optioned with a 5-speed manual transmission, air conditioning, electric mirrors, power windows, a sunroof, power steering, and a Light Grey leatherette interior with Porsche script cloth inlays.  A three-owner vehicle, this 924 S has reportedly spent its life in private collections and was on display in the last owner’s climate-controlled private museum since 2016.  Impeccably well preserved and with just under 4,500 miles showing on the odometer, this collector-grade 924 S is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New Jersey accompanied by the original manuals, tools, sales literature, and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

Carrying over the bodywork from the original Porsche 924, this 924 S comes finished in the traditional shade of Guards Red and rides on factory 15” “Phone Dial” wheels mounted with Pirelli P6000 tires dated from 2015.  The finish is described to be all-original and in excellent show-quality condition, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with paint meter readings and a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin is trimmed in Light Grey leatherette upholstery with matching carpets and Porsche script cloth inlays on the front and rear seat centers.  Accessories include black carpet floormats with red Porsche lettering, an optional air conditioning system, power windows, electrically operated mirrors, an electric sliding sunroof, a windshield with green graduated tint, a cassette container, and a coin storage box.  The cabin remains beautifully presented with all gauges and accessories working properly including the original Blaupunkt radio.

The 924 S was offered with the same 2.5L inline-four engine from the Porsche 944, which was slightly detuned with a lower compression ratio to accommodate regular-grade fuel.  This engine delivers up to 150 HP and 142 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle.  The suspension and braking systems were borrowed from the 944, including ventilated discs with floating calipers at all corners.  This example was also optioned with power steering.  Under the last owner’s care, this 924 S was treated to a full service in 2016 at 3,793 miles including a new battery, cam belt, A/C system recharge, and replacements of the oil, coolant, brake, and transmission fluid.

This sale will include a set of keys, the original owner's manuals and sales literature, a toolkit, spare tire, air compressor, some service records, a clean title, and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. Easily one of the best-preserved, lowest mileage 924s available, this outstanding 1987 example makes a perfect complement to any Porsche collection or automotive museum.

    This car sold at Amelia or major auction will bring out top dollar. Remember the Minerva Blue 1980 924 that sold for $53,760 at RM Sotheby's in 2018 ? Collectors are out there looking to have their complete Porsche collection.

    I was the 2nd owner of this car and it was part of my private collection here in Austin until I sold it in 2016 with just under 3,800 recorded miles . Interested parties should bid with confidence. This car is among the best, of not THE best, 924's in the country and I have no doubt it will exceed the expectations of even the most discerning buyer.

    Guess like all the ultra low mileage cars a museum or collection is the right place for them driving them just spends the extra money paid to own.them in the first place. This one looks like a great Preservation Concourse candidate, good luck to the seller. I think the real early 924s in unusual colors will be the 924 to have in future days.

  • finallygonedark (registered bidder) 3 years, 2 monthsago

    $30k would be a MASSIVE stretch on this car (even $25k would be a stretch). I like the car, but they just aren’t there yet on the valuation scale.

  • JBoxerGT2 (registered bidder) 3 years, 2 monthsago

    @Ringmeister
    This car is concourse, and should get $30k it deserves it. You look at Autotempest searching every add Nationwide for a 924S of any kind or shape and find maybe 6 or less cars for sale. This at Amelia Island at RM & Sotheby's would be an epic sale. This a museum peace. About 5 years ago a white one sold for $19,000 at Amelia island and it had 40k miles or so. Imagine today in today's prices?

    I know this car personally and can vouch for how amazing the condition is. It's an absolute time-warp example. Anyone wanting to add one of these to their collection would be hard-pressed to find a better one. Recently a low mile 89 RX-7 sold on another auction site for $66,000. Not saying it's gonna reach that number but to me this is a more desirable car and in even better condition than that one.

    Very very nice! Gonna keep my eye on this one. Brings back memories. These cars like to be be driven often. Know these cars very well . Interesting where the reserve will be on this one. Had a collection of three including a 88 924S-SE all non sunroof, preferred cars. I can see this get in today's market and the super low miles $20k to $30k
