Up for auction is this 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa finished in Guards Red. Debuted with the highly desirable G50 5-speed manual gearbox for the 1987 model year, this Targa has also received many upgrades and styling modifications including an MSDS air intake, early-style Targa band, chrome mirrors, black Fuchs wheels, Sway-A-Way torsion bars, RS door panels, a Wevo shifter, Vintage bucket seats, and more. The engine reportedly received a top-end rebuild in 2007 and the front and rear suspension is said to have been recently rebuilt as well. Currently showing approximately 178k miles on the odometer, this Carrera Targa is being offered for auction by its seller out of Utah.
This 911 is finished in Guards Red and features an early short-wheelbase style silver Targa band along with early Durant-style mirrors, silver door handles, chrome rocker panels, and reversed windshield wipers. Other modifications include TRE R-style taillights, front fog light deletes, slim bumperettes, and H4 headlamps with chrome bezels, early-style rounded lenses, and mesh stone guards. The Targa top has been rebuilt and some cosmetic imperfections are depicted throughout the exterior, additional images are provided in the photo gallery. This Targa rides on 15”x7” and 15”x8” Fuchs-style wheels finished in black with Bridgestone Potenza tires, 66mm studs, and open-end steel lugs. 19mm wheel spacers are also fitted in the rear.
Inside, the cabin has been customized with Vintage bucket seats, a MOMO steering wheel, a Zuffenhaus solid hub, a Wevo shifter, black RS carpeting, RS-style door panels, and custom handmade leather door straps. The sound system has been upgraded with Polk door speakers and a Pioneer stereo. The A/C compressor has been removed and the heating system has been backdated with a blower motor delete. The seller notes that the door locks are partially incomplete and that the driver’s side door must be locked from the passenger side before the passenger door is locked and closed. The doors can be unlocked normally.
The air-cooled 3.2L flat-six engine was factory rated at 217 HP and is said to have undergone a top-end rebuild by John Walker in 2007. The rear wheels are driven through a 5-speed G50 manual transmission. The engine has been upgraded with an MSDS air intake and Magnecore V85 ignition wires. Other performance upgrades include a lightweight Odyssey 680 battery with a Rennline battery mount, a Rennline triangulated strut brace, and Sway-A-Way 23/31 torsion bars. Recent service items are said to include replacement of the CV boots, a new catalytic converter, new exhaust studs, complete rebuilds of the front and rear suspension, and a wheel alignment, corner balance, and Euro ride height adjustment performed at West End Alignment. A collection of service records is provided for reference in the photo gallery.
This sale will include service records and a clean title. With its desirable G50 gearbox and driver-oriented modifications, this Targa offers a fantastic value for any enthusiast looking to get behind the wheel of an air-cooled Porsche 911.

@jnduda - @jnduda - No leaks/drips or water issues with the cab.
The most recent service was completed 3 weeks ago with an oil change. I can provide receipts as needed.
I personally drove the car from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City with zero issues.
Any leaks, drips or water issues getting into the cab? Do you know if/when the last tune up was completed and the general age of the tires. Any reason to believe the car wouldn't be able to make a long (ish) drive?

@Neverenough A few questions
1 Why was frunk painted. I've never known one to be painted unless rotisserie or accident?
Not sure why it was painted. We are a dealer and bought it this way but keep in mind this is a 30 year old + car.
2 Is it lighting or dent on R R quarter?
RR quarter panel has a little dent, smaller then a dime. (Photo will be uploaded)
3 I'm assuming seat backs are not adj. Correct?
Correct, they are not adjustable.
4 Fuchs look to be aftermarket Fuchs Type wheels. True?
Fuchs are OEM.
5 Those rear "bumpers" are not really bumpers are they? They look like plastic.
Bumpers are metal and believed to be OEM with the plastic removed for the outlaw look.
6 Are AC lines still there and do you happen to have compressor brackets?
AC lines and compressor have been removed by a prior owner.
7 Some short shift kits are hard to shift...how is this setup?
Short shift drastically improves the shift. It's very easy to shift and shifts well IMO.
8 Pic #36 looks like dash has bubbling. Just lighting or?
Dash has no bubbling.
9 How is the big side to side rubber seal on front of targa bar?
The seals for the Targa bar are in great shape.

Video content has been added to the listing page
@Bortone - Hello, a cold start video should be up shortly.
@AlexM - The frunk has been painted. I had informed PCar Market about that prior to the auction and it should have been in the listing.
How about a verifiable cold start video and an around-town driving video? Thanks!
frunk looks like another color in 2nd pic. it was replaced or just lighting?
Hey everyone,
We will add a few videos today.
Also, please let me know if any additional info is needed. PPI's are welcomed and encouraged before auction end as well.
Confirmed, the Fuchs are 16".
@Roma - the car is free of any rust, happy to set up a facetime or provide any detailed pics
Would the Seller plz comment on any rust (understanding its a California car)? THX
@yeezus it is not forbidden, however, solicitations to buy the vehicle outside the platform are forbidden. Familiarizing yourself with our terms will be of great help to you. Best of luck.
@yeezus - Great find!
Thanks for the correction on the tail lights, copy/paste error on my part.
Checking on the fuchs to confirm and will update.
@yeezus I tried to link the old pelicanparts classified ad, but apparently this auction site thinks that is "sharing contact information" which is "strictly forbidden"
I almost bought this car a few years ago (2017?) when it was for sale locally to me in Manhattan Beach, CA. Back then, I did some research on it and found the previous owner's for-sale thread on Pelican Parts. I bookmarked it, so it's here if anyone is interested in seeing what the car looked like in 2015, google "pelicanparts 1987 targa hot rod for sale"
I do notice a few inconsistencies between the description and the pictures:
- The ad copy mentions "TRE R-style taillights", which are definitely not on the car in these pictures. They were on the car at some point though, as they can be seen in the old pelican ad
- The lug nuts are definitely not open ended.
- The wheels look like 16" fuchs to me
- There are no rear bumperettes, those black pieces flanking the license plate are some sort of aftermarket license plate light housing.
This looks like a great driver, GLWTA!
Hello PCarMarket Bidders. Welcome to my 1987 Targa with G50 auction. This is the 3rd car i’m listing here on PCar.
This is a tasteful, rust free outlaw style targa.
The ad speaks for itself but feel free to ask any questions or use the ‘Contact Seller’ option to reach out directly. Locals are welcome to come see it in person.
Lastly, I am happy to provide any additional information, pics, or videos! Good luck and happy bidding!
