We are pleased to present this stunning 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera M491 Coupe finished in special order Granite Green Metallic over a Grey-Green interior. Marking the first year of the desirable G50 5-speed manual gearbox, this 1987 example represents one of the few M491 Turbo-Look Coupes reported to have been delivered to the U.S. in 1987. In addition to its wide Turbo-derived body, suspension, and brakes, this Coupe was factory optioned with Sports Seats and a limited-slip differential. Easily one of the most well-configured M491 examples on the market, this 1987 Carrera is now being offered for auction by its seller in Missouri while showing just over 36k miles on the odometer.
This Coupe is finished in the rare special-order color of Granite Green Metallic, and the paint is noted by the seller to be in excellent condition throughout (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery). The M491 specification adds the wide fenders, front spoiler, and Tea Tray rear decklid of the 911 Turbo model. This particular example retains factory Fuchs wheels dressed in Toyo Proxes tires dated from 2017.
Inside, this 911 showcases a Grey-Green partial leather interior with highly desirable factory leather Sport Seats. Other original specifications include front seat heating and height adjustment, an intensified windscreen washer, headlamp washers, a central locking and alarm system, automatic heating control, automatic speed control, a luggage compartment with velour carpet, and a rear window wiper. An upgraded Porsche Classic Radio has been installed, and the seller describes the cabin to be in fantastic shape.
This Carrera derives 217 HP from an air-cooled 3.2 L flat-six engine paired with a 5-speed G50 manual gearbox featuring a factory optioned limited-slip differential. As an M491 example, this 911 also shares the widened suspension setup and larger brakes of the 911 Turbo. All available service history is provided on CARFAX and the seller reports no mechanical issues at this time.

@Fjamoroso Thanks for your comments, I get the color Granite Green is my favorite, but a lot of people are fond of GPW, my car is concor level got 69.7 points out of 70 at Porsche club event had a bug on a headlight and lint in a door pocket. Not for sale, the M-491 and its garage mate I bought new GT3 I am good for now.

Nothing against GP White, I have a GPW 491 myself, but the market values the more unique colors, like this Granite, over the more common stuff like black, white and red. '87 & '88s are essentially the same (the late '88s getting some updates like three point rear seatbelts). '89s have some other differences like leds in the door locks and the late cars had 964 front windshield seals, etc.
Your car is special and worth more today than ever, bit perhaps not as much as this GG car.

@Fjamoroso Wow I wonder how much my 1988 GPW turbo -look would sell for as an all original car with 50,000 miles. The 1988 model year is the second most rare according to the M491 registry only 37 coupes for US markets, 1989 had only 17 coupes. The interior is burgundy most of the options and records from new .
@Albatross You know that I had originally thought that this car would sell for ~$110k (taking what my '88 cab sold for on BaT a couple weeks ago and adding a 25% coupe premium), but as the final bidders were aware, when are you going to get another opportunity to find a car like this? I might ascribe the majority of the additional hammer price to color and two guys wanting it badly enough.
Perhaps this result will bring some of the other unicorns outta the woodwork.

@Caymanorcarrera Crossing lines with the 930 is an interesting thought. But is the comparable a garden variety 930, or... a 1989 930 in this instance? Instead of apples and oranges it's more along the lines of Fuji apples versus Granny Smith apples.

In 1988 I was Porsche shopping for a daily driver. George Follmer (then a Porsche dealer and a friend from his Penske Racing days), suggested I keep a sharp-eye out for a "turbo-look".
"Best of both worlds", George said. "You get the wide-body, wheels/tires and suspension of the turbo, add the flexibility of a 5-speed, and avoid any drivability issues, maintenance schedule and insurance surcharges of the turbo engine."
George was exactly right. Bought an '86 M491 in Meteor Gray and enjoyed it thoroughly for several years. Great car!
No need for turbo motor at all. Those who are drivers and know the linear power deliver of these motors and how to keep revs up and potent can and will never prefer a turbo. Turbos are cool for those who like the kick and the emblem or can’t deal with not having a turbo mentally. Seriously all personal likes and dislikes. For some, a 356 is a slow boring car. For others it is exhilarating and incredibly joyful to drive. These M491’s look killer and have plenty of power. It’s all your perspective. Love this. GLT All
I owned a 1989 version of this car. I absolutely loved the way the car looked, but to be honest, every time I drove it, I wished it was a Turbo. I just could not shake the feeling that the car was nothing more than a Turbo without the heart of a Turbo. When I found myself looking for a Turbo engine to install, I decided I had to sell the car. I share this not to pull down the car here, but just to bring real-world personal experience that may be helpful to anyone drawn by the stunning beauty of the design but who may have a tiny voice in his or her head.
Also, while I hate when people comment on what a car is worth while an auction is in process, I had to jump in.........I believe this car will go WAY past $100k. It's worth every penny of it as well. No relation to the seller nor do I have any skin in this car. It's a special car that is next to impossible to duplicate. Good luck to seller and to it's next fortunate owner.
Photos do not do this color justice. In person, it's spectacular. This is a very cool car. I just have to say, PCA if you are watching, you have really screwed things up by making it so difficult to obtain a C of A. I understand you wanting the numbers first to confirm if it is or not a matching numbers car but having to take the car into a Porsche Classic Center and having the car inspected is just a mechanism to add revenue to PCA. It's a major hassle and the Porsche Classic Centers can be very far from from where the car is. This is Porsche cars attempt to mimic Ferrari's Classiche certification process and I think it's a TOTAL FAIL!!!! PORSCHE..........Please make the process of getting a C of A easier once again.
When I spoke to my representative for Pcar I was boarding a flight to Mexico and had only had the car for a couple days, (sorry it’s been harder for me to respond to all questions quicker) we hadn’t had time to detail it prior to photos or have a PPI performed, I have since detailed the car and will post a few more pictures and a video today, the car looks amazing.
I also would say it may need the air charged or a strut replaced but I think the car mechanically doesn’t need much.
The car runs and drives extremely good, tracks straight, clutch feels good and the transmission shifts very smooth, overall I rate the car extremely nice and much better than driver quality.
I would also address the question of matching numbers, since the auction is so close and we don’t have time to have the car inspected, I will guarantee it to be correct or no money will change hands, inspection of numbers on transmission and motor as soon as we can.
Please keep in mind this is one of 62 cars as many of the bidders and lookers have noted, if this were a Ferrari it would be in the Millions, what could this car do at Barrett Jackson Scottsdale or RM in Amelia island?
The final bidder today is going to be very happy with the condition of this spectacular example, and will have made a great investment in an appreciating asset.
I am not claiming to be an aficionado on M491 cars or a concourse judge of any kind, however I started in this industry as a detailer and owned a shop that did only work on highline and special interest cars, this was in the late 80’s then I was employed by Motorcars international as an inspector working into sales, I’ve owned this company for 26 years, I have bought, sold and inspected over a 1000 Porsches, long before paint meter were the holy grail.
I asked my paint and body man to come over and inspect the car yesterday, he is a 30 year veteran and a certified PPG painter.
He as I do feel the car is all original pain and here is why, the paint texture is consistent, there is no variant in paint color & there are no paint lines, he also said that a mil of paint was about a thick as cigarette cellophane wrapper.
I understand many of you feel if it reads above 5. It been painted, however when I PM a car that’s had a repainted panel it reads a 12-13 or sometimes higher, that’s obvious paint work.
Either way the cars paint is excellent weather we can agree its all original or the hood has been painted the cars paint and body is in exceptional condition.
Some would say and I agree that the M491 coupe is more desirable and more valuable than a turbo. I prefer naturally aspirated over the turbo but love the wide body. When you add up the color and condition and rarity of this, you have something special.

@Albatross Agreed on lack of CoA. Very unfortunate...I'd want bidders to be reassured that the drivetrain is numbers matching, especially if someone is about to drop close to 100 large, if not, more. Seller seems to have backed down on claim of "all original" paint.
I love it.....Airbrigade says we're kinder and gentler on here as opposed to BaT........hahaha.

@Fjamoroso Thank you for the great analysis...you really nailed it! Aside from the paint not being all original, the transmission issue is a big red flag and extremely expensive to address on a G50 (ask me how I know). Even with these 2 areas of concern, still a nice car...BUT, at this price level, it's getting almost uncomfortably close to...dare I say it...Turbo money! Hard to fathom!

Mileage
Low mileage cars are obviously more desirable and earn a premium as a result. This car's condition in the photos certainly appears to be commensurate with the stated mileage. From that perspective, I'd say this car checks the box. However, some of the problems delineated on the Redmond European invoice, particularly the transmission issues (G50 transmissions are stout and durable, and, FWIW... pricey to repair), the misaligned / damaged rocker shafts, worn shifter bushings and multiple leaking shocks raise questions for me. I'd want answers to those questions to calibrate my bidding appetite. So, I'd say that this car appears to check the mileage box from the pictures, but the story raises questions in my mind.
Options
In general, I feel that, apart from a small handful of sports purpose options (sport seats, LSD, etc.), that thirty-five years on, less is more when it comes to G Bodies. Regardless, the presence of heated(!) sport seats (which is kind of an oxymoron, but rare / cool) and LSD here check the box in my book.
So, while this car doesn't check all of the boxes, it does check some of the more important ones. It certainly looks like a nice car. Were I in the market, I woulda flown out to inspect this car and I'd be bidding. GLWA!

Ok, I have had a chance to take a closer look at the pictures. Obviously, she's a beautiful example. But for the budget and the space, I'd love to have her parked in my garage next to my other two M491s. There isn't a lot of detail to obsess over in the photos, save for throwing a coat of Vaseline on those wheel centers and replacing the ignition switch rosette. That alone is saying something.
What I'd like to do is run through the list of boxes that this thing checks and does not check...
History and Documentation
While we have some summary service & repair history via the Carfax report, we really only have one detailed service and repair record (and what a record it is!). We certainly don't have an unbroken chain of documentation throughout the vehicle's lifetime. Re: the recent detailed invoice from Redmond European, let me just say... KUDOS to Redmond European for the highly detailed report on the condition of the valves pre-adjustment! I have never seen such valve adjustment detail from a shop. Then there's the aforementioned rocker arm shenanigans. Reread the paragraph starting "Valve Adjust & Rocker Shaft Realignment.." Also, window sticker MIA and no COA. This car does not check the History and Documentation box.
Original Paint
First off, nine paint meter readings is not enough paint meter readings to determine how much of this car still wears its original paint. Thanks to the readings of 7.5 and 8.5 mils, all we know is that the car isn't 100% original paint. So, purely from a pass / fail standpoint, that's a fail. However, the question of value, vis-a-vis original paint isn't all or nothing. As far as the market is concerned, 75% original paint is better than 25% original paint. What is this car? We don't know. Based on the readings provided, maybe 75%? 80%? All we do know is that this car does not check the "100% original paint" box, but it does seem to check the mostly original paint box. IMO, this is not a bad thing. I've had original paint 911s that I didn't drive for fear of something happening to that (oh so important to the "market") vaunted original paint. I've also had repainted 911s that were easier to live with / enjoy as a result.
Color
While there's no accounting for taste, Granite Green definitely seems to check the box. Not PTS, but definitely a rare, period correct, color that you can argue is desirable in today's market. It definitely checks the color box and color is important when it comes to ascribing value. The entire time I've owned my Gemini Blue Metallic M491 it has been lavished with attention, invited to unrelated photoshoots, etc. At the same time, my black M491 was ignored. This Granite car checks the color box for sure.

I've been on a 3,000 mile road trip this past week and unable to get these pics up on my 75" screen to really scrutinize them. I will do so this evening and share my complete rundown.
Those of you that know me from Pelican / Rennlist / my recent M491 sale on BaT / the November 2020 issue of Panorama / etc., know that I'm "All In M491s" and that I have a fair amount of experience with these cars.
This car checks some boxes for sure, but there are a number of lingering questions. One thing that isn't a question in my mind is the one of original paint. The paint meter does not lie. There has been some paint work on this car. Personally, I prefer a car that you don't have to obsess over. The much bigger question on this car is what's going on with the rocker arm FUBAR? Why would a car with such low mileage need those touched? Next, why were they reinstalled incorrectly? I'd want to understand this (as much as possible) prior to bidding serious dollars.
Again, this is a very nice car and I believe the hammer price will reflect that. However, it's not a "no stories" car and the hammer price *could* reflect that.
If I didn't have a pristine '87 M491/M470 unicorn sitting in my garage, I'd be bidding on this car, a lot. So, have at it boys.
Personally, I suggest the winner hang the tail / decklid on their garage wall after replacing it with a non-tail lid. "Free" garage art and a 26+ pound weight savings to boot.

I have an ‘86 M491 Targa with 38k original miles and the car is 100% original except the tires, brake pads and wipers. I’ve owned the car for 20 years or so. The interior, including the seats, the paint, the engine bay, and the underside of my car are identical to this car in terms of cleanliness and wear. I strongly believe this is a 36k mile, largely original car.
I haven’t reviewed the paint meter readings, but keep in mind, stone chips on the hood/front fenders were present on these cars very often before 5k miles. Owners and dealers usually repaired that damage, not thinking about whether someone would bust out the paint meter and make judgements decades later. Same is true for the engine lid and areas adjacent as the edges of these areas were too often chipped by mechanics and repaired. And of course, there’s that span of the rockers before the rear wheels, where stone chips were unavoidable.
Add to all of this, that BMW, Porsche, and Mercedes Benz (I can’t speak to others), all had “Golden Hammer” shops at their manufacturing plants to repair small assembly line imperfections and damage. Then, they all had (and likely still have) paint and repair shops at their VPCs (Vehicle Preparation Center) at the ports of entry to repair transport damage, which was quite common.
Before a major lawsuit against BMW in the early 1990s, there was no limit on the amount of damage that could be repaired at the port without disclosure. Since then, any damage above a certain percentage must be disclosed to the dealer, then it is up to them whether they disclose to the consumer (the percentage had been 3% of MSRP but may be different now). None of this is within the scope of Carfax, of course.
Point is, judge the paint by it’s quality and the quality of the preparation. Factory repairs will not have any tape lines, no filler and parts will all be OEM with their stickers. If any thicker paint passes these tests, your paint meter readings don’t tell you much.

@ArticFox The only reading that shows a bit high is the hood, questionable I agree, but in my experience if a panel is repainted it jumps to a 12-13.
I believe the car is accident free and all original condition, paint has consistent texture and color match on every panel, and there are no tape lines.
I haven't been with the car for the last 34 years but the car is exceptional in every way and someone is going to get an amazing car.
I have an very experienced paint and body man and I will ask him to come on Monday to go over the car with me again and post his opinion.
Some areas of the car have been repainted, so this car doesn't have all original paint. This car may (or may not) have been in an accident. The seats show wear. My take...I don't mind areas of repaint, as long as it's done well. I don't mind if a car has been in an accident (things happen), as long as the repair was done to a high standard, and there's no frame damage. All seats will show wear to some degree. It's liberating when you don't have to worry about these things. This car just needs to be driven and enjoyed!

If you could identify the picture by number the areas of concern then that would be helpful.
Also, it is a rather encompassing statement to say "the paint is not original" when a review of the readings it appears as though both doors, both rear fenders, and rear deck are original while the roof, both front fenders, and hood show higher than normal readings. So yes, it appears some paint work has been done, but not all. Consider that roofs on these cars tend to go thin from waxing / car cover wear, and front hood and fenders tend to get some road rash that some owners just can't live with. Not saying that is the case here but certainly possible even on a low mile car. Some owners are just that picky. What I liked was that both front fenders matched and showed 6.0 and I'd take that! Also consider quality of paint matching front fenders to doors in the side on pics, if that is in fact what actually happened.
I believe the seller has been up front with the entire auction and has been responsive to questions asked. Selling a car on a forum is a lot of work and loose comments rather late in the game can be difficult to address. No affiliation here just an M491 lover rooting for the seller and this fantastic car! Can you provide a picture of the right side lower dash trim that was referenced as missing and pictures of the floor carpets without the black mats?
Have you repaired or replaced any of the items left un-repaired in the first paragraph of the general inspection done by Redmond European. I understand the a/c was not repaired, how about front and rear leaking struts, heater control cable, etc. Did the replacement of the shift bushing fix the trans noise in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear? Also what appears to be a worn rocker and shaft in #6 was left in place. Thank you i am just trying to figure out what it would take to get the car sorted correctly.

The rear badge came and went. My '85 never had one but, for other years, the default was the Carrera badge. As opposed to the old SC badges, they're just glued on and I'd be surprised if they're not easily removed or added.

@Jfreeman regarding production numbers and build orders. There are two keepers of that data that manually scraped Porsche's PET database, vin by vin, in search of all M491 & M491 + M470 optioned 3.2 Carreras.
If you register your M491 on www.turbo-look.com (and kick them a couple bucks for the Herculean effort mentioned above), Norbert, the site's proprietor, will provide production information, including option codes. He could also tell you where this '87 falls in the order.
As it's an 87, bigger vents, AC works better than my 85 M491. Thought all M491s were rear badge delete?

And to answer an earlier question.......this is a big vent car. Hopefully it's still on R12, with the AC working decent (not great) as originally manufactured. Fjamoroso was kind enough to tip me off about this listing. He and I share a serious personality disorder when it comes to old 911s and, particularly, Turbo-Looks. HE has very serious knowledge and experience re: these cars.
For years now, these cars have been increasingly appreciated. I've long thought that they will eventually surpass comparable 930s. For MY '87, it's a more difficult comparison due to the G50...........but I think this car has the potential to get there!

Gorgeous car! I have the same year, same car in paint to sample slate blue. A pleasure to drive! I have been unable to find the number of them that came in to the US in 1987. What is your source?

@MSQ We just received the car and have not done a leak down or compression test. We welcome a pre purchase inspection at either the Porsche dealership or an independent shop that has been in business for over 20 years here in Springfield.
