This 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet was acquired by the seller in 2000 from its original owner who is said to have custom-ordered the car before taking delivery at the Porsche factory in Stuttgart, Germany. It comes finished in Midnight Blue over a white leather interior. It was daily driven by the current owner for several years while being maintained by a specialist at RennSport of Springfield Virginia. The car was placed in long-term garage and outdoor storage in 2011 and has not been driven since. A perfect candidate for refurbishment, this 911 Carrera Cabriolet is now being offered for auction as a project car by its longtime owner out of Washington D.C while showing approximately 144k miles on the odometer.

This Carrera is finished in Midnight Blue with a blue cabriolet top and factory 16” Fuchs forged alloy wheels with white-painted centers. The seller notes the top was replaced in the early 2000s and the driver’s door was struck by a bicyclist and is now misaligned and shows a dent.  Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

Inside, this Carrera features a white leather interior. The seller notes the cabin suffered some water damage as a seal for the replacement convertible top was improperly installed and allowed some moisture in. Corrosion is present on the door sills and instrument dial rings as well as some mold on the upholstery.

This 911 is equipped with an air-cooled 3.2-liter flat-six engine rated at 217 HP. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed G50 manual gearbox. The seller notes the clutch was previously replaced and the car was routinely serviced at RennSport of Virginia up until 2011, although it has not been started since.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, extensive service records, igintion key along with key for the glove box, original first aid kit, original spare tire, touch up paint, and a clean title.

@82turboruf Hi 82turboruf. For most of the time that I’ve owned the car (23 years) it’s been parked in the same indoor garage (that I own) in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C. And that is where the car currently sits. When I moved in 2015 until 2019 the car moved with me and was parked outside in the driveway. The car returned to the garage in 2019.

Good morning! Thank you, all, for your interest in this beautiful 1987 911 Cabrio. I’ll be monitoring the site all day and will answer any additional questions as quickly as possible. If there is anyone in the Washington, D.C. area who wants to see the car today I would be happy to show it around 11 am or noon. Just let me know. Josh

@Jbass327 I don't see that the car had 137k miles in 2015. Photos 112 and 115 clearly show that 137k was the mileage on July 21st, 2009, and by 2015 the mileage was recorded as 144k which is the same as the odometer reads now. That would appear to support the seller's assertion that he drove it very little if at all after 2012. Am I missing something?

@joshkern my apologies for the typo. between noon and 2 pm.

  • joshkern (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@Jbass327 Hi Jbass327. You can absolutely see the car. I could do today between noon at 2 pm or tomorrow, Friday, around 11 am. send me your email address and i’ll reply with address.

To the best of my recollection I stopped driving the car around 2011/12 after my daughter was born. It’s possible that I drove it a little after that, but I truly don’t recall. I wasn’t getting a lot of sleep in 2012 and 2013, between the time that my daughter and son were born, so it’s possible my dates are off a bit. I definitely was not driving the car in 2015 and it has not been driven, started, or serviced since then.

  • Jbass327 (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@seller the car had 137k miles in 2015 and now has 144k. Was it serviced since 2015, and when did it stop running? Also, I’m local to you, are you able to show the car before auction end? Thank you!

  • joshkern (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@fillup91x good morning @fillup91x. in 2014/15 i moved to a new home and the porsche moved with me by way of AAA flatbed. when i moved the car i considered either getting the car serviced and back on the road or selling it. so i towed it to a nearby shell station that happened to employ a foreign car mechanic. i ended up deciding to just hold on to the car, but not drive it, and so had it towed back to my new home.

  • fillup91x (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@seller in 2015 the car was serviced, how was this possible if the car hadn't moved since 2011?

@Myothercarisa911 Hi. There are no cracks or defects in the front glass windshield (I don't recall whether or not it's the original glass windshield). The rear plastic window is a replacement. The rear plastic window needs to be restitched to the canvas top. The canvas top is in excellent condition.

  • Myothercarisa911 (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Are there any cracks/defects in the windshield/other glass? Is it all original genuine Porsche glass or has any of it been replaced with non-genuine parts?

  • joshkern (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@John930 Thank you. I hadn't even noticed them so glad you pointed it out.

All the requested pics are now up. Thank you PCARMARKET for uploading.

For all prospective bidders, if there are any other questions or requests for pics please try to make them by tonight so that I can address tomorrow and still give folks time to bid.

Thank you, all, for your interest.

    Josh

  • John930 (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@joshkern Thanks, Josh, for being responsive and uploading the pictures. The cracks aren't too bad, but would likely need to be addressed at some point after the door sill/B-pillar rust is addressed.

  • joshkern (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@AZCollector I was able to remove the battery and took pics. They should be uploaded very soon.

Also, the pics I took yesterday were not of the suspension mounts. I didn’t realize they were visible from the boot under the carpet. Those pics will be uploaded soon as well.

  • joshkern (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@John930 Hi John930. I took pictures of the dash and they should be uploaded very soon. You are correct. There are two cracks in the dash. I hadn’t noticed these before. They weren’t there when I was driving the car. Please let me know if the pictures are sufficient or if you need a more detailed description. Thank you. Josh

Hi. Does the dash have any cracks? If so, where and how big. (It appears as though there is a 2" crack above the center vent). Is the dash faded/discolored and/or warped?

@alfetta Hi Alfetta. I removed the sills and will upload pics later today.

  • joshkern (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Hi AZCollector. You were right. The sills are rubber and very easy to remove. Will upload pics when I get back to my computer. I think I got the suspension mounts and will upload those pics as well. Removing the battery proved more difficult. Seems like either a two person job or one person who really knows what they are doing. I took a lot of close up pics all around the battery. Please let me know if the pictures are sufficient. Thank you.

  • AZCollector (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

The sill plates look to be rubber which are easily pulled up for pictures. I would also like to get pictures of the front suspension mounts. They are just behind the valance. and lastly a picture of the battery tray with the battery removed.

@Myothercarisa911 Hi. This car has never been smoked in. This 911 has had only 2 owners--me and the original owner--and neither one of us were smokers. I will upload a picture of the inside of the ashtray. Thank you for your interest. Josh

  • alfetta (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

It would be helpful to remove the stainless steel sill plates to see the extent of the rust in the sills.

  • Myothercarisa911 (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Has the car ever been smoked in? Can you take a picture of the inside of the ashtray?

  • joshkern (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@racecarrobbie Hi @racecarrobbie. When I pushed the clutch pedal down last week as part of the picture-taking process it did not pop back on its own. I tried to capture that in the pictures as best i could.

  • racecarrobbie (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

What is going on with the clutch pedal? Looks like it is stuck to the floor?

  • joshkern (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@BigWheels Good Morning, BigWheels. Thank you for your interest. The car has not been started for the last 12 years. I never intended for it to sit dormant for so long--just happened that way. As a result, before starting the car the new owner will need to replace the oil, gas, and battery.

I am attempting to present this car in the most authentic way possible--as a car that has not been driven in a long time. (I did not have it professionally detailed before photographing.) It will need some TLC before getting it back on the road.

    Yours,
    Josh

Hello All. Welcome to the auction of my 1987 911 Cabriolet. I am new to PCARMARKET and feel very fortunate to have found this community that will hopefully provide this wonderful car with the home it deserves.

A little background about this 911.

In 2000 I purchased this 1987 Porsche 911 Cabriolet from its original owner in Potomac, MD. He and his wife travelled to Germany to pick up the 911, which they had custom ordered from the Porsche factory in Stuttgart. After driving it in Germany for a few days, they shipped the car back to their home in Maryland. This 911 has remained in the Washington, DC Metro area ever since.

When I purchased this 911 in 2000 it was in near perfect condition and it was my daily driver for several years. I had it regularly serviced with a mechanic named Carl Cordell. Carl had a shop called RennSport in Springfield, VA. There may not have been a better Porsche mechanic in the country and he regularly serviced this car as if it was his own. (Included with the purchase of this car are extensive and significant service records over many years--much of them with Carl/Rennsport. There is even the original Certificate of Transport from Germany.)

Three things happened at the end of the 2000 decade, all of which resulted in the car sitting for 12 years. I got married, Carl got sick and died, and I purchased a newer Porsche 911 Cabriolet. As a result of all three events, this 1987 911 Cabriolet laid dormant. By 2011 I had my first child and after that I never drove (or even started) the car again.

When in good condition, this 911 Cabriolet is among the most stunning Porsches I have ever seen. The midnight blue (I think it is called Marine Blue Metallic) is, in my opinion, the perfect color for this generation/body style. The partial leather white interior and matching painted white fuch wheels sets this car apart. Importantly, this car is in original condition with 100 percent original paint and no modifications except for a replacement radio and speakers and a replacement canvas top (and of course the replacement parts that were installed over the years). I will take extensive paint meter readings. The paint is 100 percent all original.

On one of the last times that I drove this car I opened the driver’s side door to get out and a bicyclist hit the door. As a result the driver’s side door has a “wrinkle” in it and the door does not close properly. That is the only accident this car has ever had.

When I replaced the canvas top (sometime in the 2000s) I stupidly did not also replace a piece that helps to seal the top with the door windows. As a result water began to sit in door sills resulting in some rust. I will take pics of this rust so it can be easily seen.

I will answer any and all questions fully and to the best of my ability. I hope the new owner will return this car to its former glory.
