Up for auction is this 1987 BMW E28 535is presented in Salmon Silver Metallic over a black leather interior. The second generation of BMW's 5-Series executive sedan, the E28 introduced a new computer-designed chassis, revised multi-point suspension, anti-lock brakes, an onboard computer, and power accessories as standard equipment. This 1987 535is features a 5-speed manual transmission, limited-slip differential, aerodynamic upgrades, and full-power Recaro seats. Acquired from the original owner out of upstate New York in 2017, this E28 has since received a new braking system, ignition system, a differential rebuild, a valve adjustment, and recent replacement of fluids, belts, and filters. Showing just over 143k miles on the odometer, this classic 5-Series is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York.
This E28 is finished in Salmon Silver Metallic (Lachssilber Metallic, 203) and features an electric sunroof, a front air dam with integrated foglights, a rear spoiler, and center-mounted dual exhaust tips. The car has reportedly been garage-kept and the seller notes some deterioration of the clearcoat due to age as well as some scratches and other small imperfections as depicted in the photo gallery. This 535is rides on aftermarket 16” BBS wheels mounted with older Michelin Primacy MX4 tires. A clean CARFAX report is provided.
The interior is trimmed in black leather with power-adjustable bolstered Recaro seats. Driver’s amenities include full power accessories, a thirteen-button onboard trip computer, air conditioning, and a leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel. The seller describes the cabin to have been kept in great shape with no cracks present on the dashboard. The aftermarket radio works intermittently and the original BMW head unit is said to accompany the sale.
This 535is is powered by a 3.5L M30B34 inline-six engine, which was factory rated at 182 HP and 215 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed manual transmission and a 25% locking limited-slip differential. The 535is model came equipped with a sports suspension including stiffer springs, shocks, and anti-roll bars. In the last 5 years, this E28 has received a new ignition system, a valve adjustment, a new clutch fan, and new differential bearings and seals. In the last 2 months, the master and slave cylinder for the clutch has been replaced as well as a new brake master cylinder, new engine belts, a new fuel filter, an oil service, and a brake system flush. The seller reports the car has a small exhaust leak.
This sale will include a clean title and factory toolkit. Hailing from the golden era of BMW quality and craftsmanship, this 5-speed E28 offers excellent value as a classic European sports sedan.
