The 1986 model year saw the introduction of the Porsche 944 Turbo (951) which featured a new turbocharged and intercooled engine as well as improved aerodynamics, a stiffer suspension, and larger brakes than the standard 944 model. This launch-year example comes finished in Guards Red over a Black interior and features a host of options including partial leather front seats, an electric sunroof, Sport shock absorbers, cruise control, a rear window wiper, protective side moldings, and a raised steering wheel hub. Showing under 6k miles on the odometer, this 944 Turbo is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Connecticut.

The 944 Turbo is distinguished from a standard 944 by its more rounded aerodynamic nose with an integrated bumper and driving lights as well as a body-colored diffuser below the rear bumper. This example is finished in Guards Red (LM3A) and comes equipped with 16” Phone Dial wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Exalto tires. Optional equipment includes protective side moldings and a rear window wiper. Paint protection film is said to have been applied in May 2021, and the seller believes the front right fender and roof to have been refinished under previous ownership. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin presents black partial leather upholstery and features an optional electric sunroof, raised steering wheel hub, cruise control, and partial leather front seats. An upgraded Porsche Classic Communication Management system has been fitted. Equipment also includes Altec Lansing speakers, power windows & door locks, air conditioning, and 944-embroidered floor mats. The seller adds that the power window relay was replaced in November 2021.

A turbocharged and intercooled 2.5-liter inline-four engine delivers up to 220 HP and 243 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual transaxle. The 944 Turbo features a stiffer suspension than a standard 944 and shares its fixed 4-piston Brembo brakes with the contemporary 911 Carrera. The seller adds that the transaxle O-rings were replaced in November 2021, and a replacement exhaust system has been fitted. More recent service items are said to include the power steering pressure line replaced in September 2022, and the power steering rack, power steering reservoir, and tie rods replaced in August 2023.

This sale will include a clean title, a window sticker, and a host of service records.

The auction is coming to an end in a hour. Thanks for all the questions, I think we all learned somethings for sure. Again, this 944 turbo is in excellent condition. Paint meter reading are overall almost new... I am willing to replace the timing belt for 'completeness' purposes if the reserve is met. Good luck, and be assured that any car from my collection will be a great acquisition...

@porsdrvr95 in regards to the timing belt, I agree with the seller. There is a lot of misconception regarding the timing belt. I have an 88 944s with 23,000 miles I recently took to the regional Porsche dealer for scheduled maintenance and requested the timing belt to also be checked. The mechanic informed me it was in great shape. He stated age is really not a big factor and they are designed to go 60,000 to 90,000 miles.

@estevepj hello, the dash is in great condition, no cracks at all, door panels all in great condition. A/c is working well . not much to be done with this car. Exhaust is new, steering rack replaced. I'll replace the timing belt, if the reserve it meet... take care.

  • estevepj (registered bidder) 11 months, 2 weeksago

@stim4u Beautiful car. Tough to be certain from the pictures, can you confirm if there's any cracking in in the dash, door panels, etc.? Also looks like the AC was redone, is that working currently?

  • tff (registered bidder) 11 months, 2 weeksago

I'm not Nathan, but this came with single stage paint. (I have a 1988 944, and it has single stage as well).

  • stim4u (seller) 11 months, 2 weeksago

@Nashvegas I just activated that second wiper switch to the right and it has no function … the left sided rear wiper switch works well. As a side note, my other 944 turbo/951 has neither switch(missing two switches) and no rear wiper option , it was deleted . So at this time I have no idea why they installed an inactive repeat rear-wiper switch from the factory … quirky in 80s

  • stim4u (seller) 11 months, 2 weeksago

@Nashvegas Is Nathan Metz in the house ? That’s a great paint question for him… in any case the right fender touch up is very minimal and maybe a 8 by 8 inch section of the front fender at best . Car has great pain meter readings overall .

  • stim4u (seller) 11 months, 2 weeksago

@Stingray72454 the original owner put in a custom stereo and subwoofer. A new subwoofer was installed with a Porsche classic radio under my care by F40 Wayne Carini group. The drivers side glove compartment has a cd changer component that was not removed … stereo works great .

  • stim4u (seller) 11 months, 2 weeksago

@Nashvegas Wayne didn’t recommend the timing belt, neither did ffld motor sport nor porsche ffld , interesting right?… in any case if the car hits the reserve I would be happy to have the timing belt replaced for the owner . Not a major service cost . I will get back to you on the paint and switch questions…

  • Nashvegas 11 months, 2 weeksago

@stim4u Thanks and I've seen that video - however that car, and this car differ... in Doug's video there is a blank on the right, the car here in Pic 73 shows another rear wiper switch on the right... so there is an extra rear wiper switch just to left of fader on pic 73.

Pretty cool to see Wayne Carini's name and the F40 Motorsport receipt in the service records btw.

My perspective is that anyone who changes the water pump on these cars would change the 30+ year old timing belt. I'd say you got terrible counsel on that... there is no controversy about whether or not to change. Porsche Classic require it and that's the gold standard. The newest belts (say last 8-10 years) are different rubber composition and those are the ones you can leave go longer. This belt... well it's early 90's and the old style rubber. I wouldn't drive this car without changing the belt at this age, risk is too great.. please new owner change it. Same goes with underhood fuel lines btw.

Question on paint - Is this single stage Guards Red or Basecoat / Clearcoat? I believe 86 944 (and 928 and 911) were still single stage Guards Red in 1986, it starts to become a bit "grey" in the late 80's and by 90 or so all were basecoat/clearcoat. And the repainted portions - were they done in single stage or basecoat/clearcoat? (PS can't do the "rub test" for single stage with the PPF on it, which is why I ask)

  • stim4u (seller) 11 months, 2 weeksago

@Stingray72454 these are the original wheels/rims. They were powder coated by Porsche ffld in 2019. They can be easily reversed (powder coat removed) if desired …

  • stim4u (seller) 11 months, 2 weeksago

@carluvr the 951 has PPF throughout the car which increases the meter reading values. You can see the car is essentially uniform in reading (if you subtract 10 mil) . That being said the prior owner disclosed that he painted just the front driver side fender after nicking a side pole driving the manual … obviously no major damage occurred.

  • Stingray72454 (registered bidder) 11 months, 2 weeksago

I see in 2019 the wheels were a stock finish, when were the wheel repainted or is there factory original set of wheels that comes with the car ? Also are there any custom cut holes for the stereo

  • carluvr (registered bidder) 11 months, 2 weeksago

    @stim4u
Was this car repainted? The paint meter seems high for a 6K mile car.

@kkristofek car comes with a NJ title copy, and CT state registration . CT does not issue new titles for cars over 20years old. Your DMV would accept the NJ title and CT registration via the national DMV data base and issue a new title in your home state (if you don’t have the same CT 20 year title rule) . I have sold several cars with PCM market where the buyer has been issued a new title in their home state . Thanks

@porsdrvr95 belts were inspected with water pump repair more recently . Belts were replaced in 1992 per records . Don’t disagree with you .. 30k miles is mentioned in the manual. No clear reason to replace at this, but can be done prophylactically …

  • porsdrvr95 (registered bidder) 11 months, 2 weeksago

The belt is 38 years old. I would think age alone calls for a change.

  • stim4u (seller) 11 months, 2 weeksago

@porsdrvr95 The water pump has been replaced. The timing belt has not, and was not recommended by the local specialist at this time. I know there is controversy as to when to change the timing belt with a low mileage vehicle, and age of the car... hope that helps.

  • porsdrvr95 (registered bidder) 11 months, 2 weeksago

My apology if I missed it. Has the water pump and timing belt been replaced?

@Nashvegas on the center console , the far left switch to right are: sunroof, rear wiper, side mirror adjust, open-close switches. The car has some 80’s quirks for sure …

Nice 944 Turbo. Excellent documentation as well (I have a low mileage 944 Turbo as well... but not *this* low). I notice two switches for the rear wiper on the center console... do you know what the 2nd one is for?
