Offered as the top-range model in its class from 1980 to 1986, the Porsche 928 S came with additional standard features, front & rear spoilers, uprated brakes, and a more powerful V8 engine. This 1986 example was originally sold from Motorworks of Barrington, a high-end dealership in the Chicago area, and is finished in Garnet Red Metallic over a Burgundy leather interior. It was acquired by the seller from its third owner out of New Mexico and was brought to RAC performance in Texas for a no-expense-spared refurbishment. The car has been completely refinished and benefits from the replacement of the timing belt, water pump, vacuum lines, and fuel lines as well as the installation of an upgraded Porken timing belt tensioner and a straight-piped rear exhaust section. Showing just over 113k miles on the odometer, this 928 S is now being offered for auction by its fourth owner out of California.
This 928 is finished in Garnet Red Metallic and is identifiable as an “S” model by its black polyurethane front and rear spoilers as well as body-colored side moldings. Other equipment includes integrated front fog lamps, pop-up headlights, an electric sunroof, a rear window wiper, and 16” forged aluminum slotted disc wheels. The seller notes the car was repainted in its original color in 2023 along with refinishing the wheels and installation of new Toyo Extensa HP II tires. Some bubbling in the original paint is noted on the passenger door sill and some overspray is present on the gaskets between the nose and front fenders as well as one hazy sport on the nose. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report showing the vehicle to have hit a deer in 2005.
The cabin is appointed with Burgundy leather upholstery and includes power seats, windows, and mirrors as well as automatic climate control, cruise control, optional rear seat air conditioning, a central locking system, a leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel, and an original Blaupunkt radio. The seller notes some signs of wear and cracking are present on the leather seating surfaces as well as some cracks on the instrument cluster cover and wear on the accessory buttons. The remote trunk release and rear window wiper are inoperable, some of the gear selector indicator lights are out, and the sound system crackles when adjusting the volume knob. All other accessories are said to be fully functional.
This 928 S is powered by a 5.0-liter 32-valve DOHC V8 engine which sends 288 HP and 302 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels by way of a 4-speed automatic transaxle. The seller notes an upgraded Porken timing belt tensioner has been installed, the rear exhaust resonator has been replaced with a straight piped section, a battery disconnect is fitted in the cargo compartment, and the secondary air injection pump has been removed. The following list of maintenance was also provided by the seller:
2021 RAC Performance Service:
2022 Service:
2023 Service:
This sale will include some documentation, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “I did an ‘open checkbook’ refurbish at Porsche specialists RAC Performance when I purchased the car. Recently took on two long-distance (>250 mile) drives and the car performed flawlessly. I would not hesitate to drive it cross-country today.”

Hello! As we come to the conclusion of the auction, I’m available to answer questions. This is a ready-to-go 928, and will delight its next owner.
Just to reiterate: I will provide a valid smog cert for a California buyer.
Hello! I've uploaded the service records from the period 2014-2023. This includes the major timing belt / water pump service.
Also, for some reason the description does not make clear that this is a 1986.5 car, with ABS. A picture of the ABS module itself is included in the gallery.
Additional content has been added to the gallery for this listing.
I don’t know how extensive the 2015 accident was. No damage visible to frame rails for sure. Any repairs were very high quality - all the panel gaps around the hood and front fenders are spot on.
Will deliver with a CA smog cert if a CA buyer wins the bids.
Currently registered in Montana. Seats work. V-8 is running excellent. I have not put it on a dyno, but it feels like the rated 288 horsepower.
Front headlights work — please see pictures with light both off/down and on/up.
Currently registered and where? Currently smogged in CA?
What damage did deer accident do?
How is the V-8 running and at what HP.?
Looks great. Do all the adjustments on both front seats work? Front headlights??

Hello, all! I've had several 928s, and this one is the one I've kept the longest and done the most work to bring up to snuff. It's a beautiful car that gets compliments pretty much every time I take it out in public.
Feel free to ask questions and I'll do my best to answer. I can show the car in person anywhere between San Mateo and Sonoma, CA.
