Designated by equipment code M491, the Turbo-Look option allowed 911 buyers to equip their car with the wide fenders, spoilers, brakes, and suspension of the 930 Turbo model. This 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa is reportedly one of 57 Targas equipped with the rare M491 option in the U.S. for the model year. It comes finished in Meteor Metallic over a Wine Red leather interior, a rare color combination, and was factory-equipped with an optional limited-slip differential, Sport Seats, Grey-Green carpeting, Blaupunkt Monterey Audio, Cruise Control, an alarm system, and a black leather steering wheel. Cared for by one owner before the selling dealer’s acquisition, this 911 underwent extensive recent service and is now being offered for auction out of Virginia with approximately 134k miles on the odometer.
The M491 Turbo-Look option includes the wide front and rear fenders of the 930 Turbo as well as its front air dam and Tea Tray rear spoiler. This Carrera Targa is finished in Meteor Grey Metallic with a black Targa roll bar and a removable, recently refinished targa roof panel. Other equipment includes black rear fender stone guards, a front valance with integrated fog lights, a center tail panel reflector with Porsche lettering, and Turbo-spec 16” Fuchs wheels with color Porsche crest center caps. The car rides on new Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires and the seller describes the paint to be in very good, all original condition. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with paint meter readings and a clean CARFAX report.
Inside, this 911 features a Wine Red leather interior with unique Grey-Green carpets and optional Sport Seats. Accessories include a black leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel, a Porsche-crested gear knob, electric front seat height adjustment, air conditioning, a central locking system, cruise control, power windows and mirrors, a heated rear window, a locking glove box, and a quartz clock. The seller describes the interior to be highly original and in very good condition with all gauges and accessories remaining fully functional.
An air-cooled 3.2-liter flat-six engine provides an output of up to 207 HP and 192 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle and an optional limited-slip differential. In addition to wide bodywork, the M491 option includes the improved brakes and suspension setup of the 930 Turbo. This example underwent a major service in 2015 within the last few hundred miles at Porsche Service Specialist in Chantilly VA, including new brake pads and rotors, a new thermostat, oil lines, timing cover gasket, crankshaft seal, oil cooler hoses, oil pressure sender, valve cover gaskets, a distributor cap/rotor, front struts, and a wheel alignment. The seller performed updated service within the last month, including ALL new tires, an oil and filter change, a brake fluid flush, new hood and deck lid struts, spark plugs, ignition wires, a new battery, new rear shocks, fuel flush, fuel system cleaning, a new fuel filter, and a new fuel pump and sending unit, and newly rebuilt, removal top assembly and headliner replaced, with servicing invoices upwards of over $6,000.00 in December 2023.
This sale will include a toolkit, a spare tire, an air pump, a car cover, a battery charger, some documentation, a clean title, and a Porsche Production Specifications Certificate.
The seller would like you to know: "Thank you for visiting our auction. This is a very special car that has belonged to the original owner since new! He specially ordered it from PORSCHE back in 1985. This car has never been offered for sale before, and we have the original title to prove it. This is an all-original, one-owner M491 911 Targa, only one of 57 made for the US market in 1986 and one of 193 total worldwide! This car is special-optioned in Meteor Metallic, with only 2-3 examples out there featuring this stunning color combination for the US market. The owner preserved and cared for this 911, using it as a daily weekend driving car for over 30+ years. In 2015, when he fell physically ill and was unable to drive this car daily, the client spent over $14k in services with a Porsche Specialist shop here locally in Chantilly, Virginia. The intention was to preserve all aspects of this car for a longer storage period. The owner only drove it about once a month around the neighborhood roads and stored it back in his garage. When we heard about this car, we were very excited to acquire it, but he was very hesitant to sell it to us in the past few years due to its rarity. Now, knowing he was unable to physically drive a manual anymore, this gorgeous, no paintwork, all-original, and extremely well-preserved M491 911 Targa is now being offered for sale for the first time in 37 years! It was just recently serviced in December 2023, with invoices upwards of $6K, which deems this car ready for the road!"

The most beautiful color on a 930 or M491...I special ordered my 1985 M491 coupe in Meteor on Black...drove it for 11 years. Out of all the 911s I have owned it was my favorite....Best Wishes to the winner of this one...

@Buh_buh The car will BE CERTIFIED AND GARANTEED NO PAINT WORK.
I think the analogy IGB911 and Poirier are suggesting is that measuring paint thickness in mm is like measuring a football field in miles with little decimal points to work with. Both difficult to quantify.
@IGB911 As I mentioned before, since you are "local" please come to my office now, I will take the car with you to have it inspected to assure this car HAS NO PAINT, NO PREVOUS BODY REPAIRS, I WILL CERTIFY THIS CAR HAS NO PAINT WORK AND WILL GARANTEE THE CAR! I was hoping you where coming yesterday?
as I previously mentioned, and reiterated by @Poirier, both without suggesting anything, we are all familiar with paint meter readings in microns or mils. Of the hundreds of reading I have looked at I have never seen a one and a two and nothing else. I think it would be in your best interest to clarify but maybe the question has been asked and answered. GLWTA.

@Speedj1 YES, sorry we are we working the upload, for some reason it went into reverse upload, sorry, I hope that mishap doesn’t confuse you anymore. There is like 200 pictures of it. Stand by for the new drive video. Sounded good thought!
@Poirier it’s doesn’t need to prove any more about the paint work question I have multiple experience professionals inspect this car, no paint work.
@celotola car was in stored away and rarely driven, it’s been extremely well preserved. What’s odd about that? Is this something new to you.
Thanks for the video, although a bit confusing as right hand drive.
also curious about paint meter readings. And lack of any service records since 2015 is a bit odd. I see engine was resealed but no valve work done; would that explain compression being around 125psi - ideally would it be around 180psi?
Bid in the amount of $57,000
@IGB911 @IGB911; @aBD20152 HI, i'm also curious about the paint reading. Do you have any reading in microns or mils? Almost hard to believe this is the orgininal paint. The paint looks really nice and good looking :)
Would love to see a driving video. Any plans to post?

Bid in the amount of $48,000
@IGB911 Car is still at our local Porsche Specialty shop in line for a compressions test, but I was able to go get some paint meter readings by the stone guards. All reading .1 mm.

Just uploaded photos of the PPI completed today at our local PCA affiliate shop. GT Peace Automotive. Will upload compression test once completed.

@SocalRS We are expecting the compression test results by today. If you are wanting more testing results I will be happy to direct you to the Porsche PCA affiliated facility, GT Peace in Chantilly VA. and you can request the leakdown test at your expense. Let me know if you want to proceed with that, we can facilitate that for you. Best Regards,
@IGB911 its more beautiful than unusual. Since your "local", please come down and see the car for yourself, once you put your eyes on her it will build your confidences on this car to be true and true all the way through. If that not enough I can walk it over to body shop across the street and have them meter it right Infront of you. Let me know if your coming by we will be here til 6pm today. Best Regards,
Are you planning to do leakdown test? My understanding is it's a more accurate picture of cylinder health and typically done same time with compression test. Thanks, beautiful and rare example, GLWA!
a beautiful and unusual example. I am local and would consider coming to see the car in person. I am concerned about the paint and the paint meter readings. The readings are inconsistent with anything I that I have ever seen both in terms of the lack of variation and the shockingly low numbers of either a one or a two. Do you have access to another paint meter? Can you take a reading from the door jams? Many thanks in advance.
Bid in the amount of $46,000
@Birtch SURE. We can order new one from the dealer and replace it. It’s just a stone guard decals. Thank you for your concern
Bid in the amount of $45,194
@tff - beautiful car and color but I agreed - stone guards are not in correct location - 1.) should start under the bottom rubber strip not above it and 2.) it shouldn’t overlap the flat arch area of the wheel well- should be applied to the curved forward facing section of the panel only
Bid in the amount of $44,944
@Speedj1 Yes sir. Shifts very smooth. Will upload once car is back from compression test.
@Carrerachas don’t have service records for when the clutch was done. Will upload driving video when car is back from compression test. A/C functions as well as when made in the 80s.
Any chance for a ride along video, going through the gears?
Very nice 911. Do you have history for a clutch replacement and rebuild of the gearbox? Will you be able to provide a driving video preferably with the top installed? How "well" does the ac cool? Thank you.

@Buh_buh We are currently in the process of completing a compression test. Please stand by.
Had a compression test been done on the car recently and can the results be shared?
@The_emyrean_._ Also, just uploaded the most recent service records on the car done this month. Recent services include; New Bridgestone tires, Brake fluid flush, New spark plugs and coils, New ignition wires, New battery and terminal connectors, Oil and filter, New rear shocks, Full fuel service (fuel pump, sending unit, filter, etc.), and more. @The_emyrean_._ Yes, The car had an engine reseal less than 200 miles ago. Including all the major gaskets/seals such as Crankshaft Seal, Valve Cover gaskets, Thermostat gasket, Timing Cover gasket, Breather plate gasket, Chain tensioner O-ring, and more. Service Record included in listing pictures. Pictures of undercarriage also included in listing. Bone dry!
Bid in the amount of $35,911
Forgive me if it's listed in the add but I didn't see any work for an engine rebuild/reseal? Has one been done to this car in the past?
Bid in the amount of $35,491
@The_emyrean_._ thank you! Yes sir. This one has the 5 speed G915 Transmission.
Gorgeous gorgeous offering. This car comes with the 915 trans, correct?
@darashiro absolutely! Just sent them in. Will be uploaded shortly.
Rare bird. It will fly high.
Do you have any videos of a cold start, idle, and driving?
@Ranger3 Absolutely. We had a very hard time finding comparable examples of this car for market research. A lot more M491 Cabs and coupes. A lot in Guards Red. The color, body, and Targa top make this one a really nice find!
@jctsc Thank you! Definitely in stellar condition given their age. We did our best to take a lot of pictures to show off these seats. Handled with care and never left out in the sun. Basic, slight wear to be expected but no crazy rips, sun fading, or holes. Truly a proud point on the car!
Seats seem to perfect for 134k miles!
My want for this one is off the scale!

Hello good morning and great question! Previous Paint work......We are uploading our metering of the body panels for paint inspection, this morning. This car is stunning in Meteor Grey and im happy to say this car has no paint work on any of the major panels of the car. As for the 'aftermarket rock guards' question.....not sure let me measure that for you to see if its authentic sticker or not.
The rear fender stone guards' shape doesn't look typical. Are those 'aftermarket'? And it begs the question therefore whether the car has had any paintwork? Beautiful car. I have a Meteor Grey Boxster... so would make a nice pair of meteors.
Bid in the amount of $35,000
Hello Everyone. Very excited to present this gorgeous One Owner 1986 M491 Porsche 911 Targa. I have kept an eye on this market for years, and can truly say this car is one of a kind with this history and color combo. I will be available for any questions you may have, and happy bidding!
