This 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe was sold new in Madrid, Spain, and came factory-optioned with the M491 Turbo-look package, adding the wide fenders, spoilers, brakes, and suspension of the 930 Turbo. It comes finished in Guards Red over a black interior with optional Sport Seats and features an air-cooled 3.2-liter flat-six engine paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle and an optional limited-slip differential. It was imported to the U.S. in 1986 and recently purchased by the seller from its original owner. Fortified with a rebuilt engine, this rare RoW Carrera M491 is now being offered for auction out of Florida.

Equipped with the M491 option, this Carrera features Turbo-style bodywork including wide fenders, a front chin spoiler, and a tea tray rear spoiler. It comes finished in Guards Red and equipped with headlamp washers, yellow-tinted fog lights, Euro-spec side marker lights, black rear fender stone guards, an electric sunroof, and 16”x7” and 16”x8” Fuchs forged alloy wheels. New Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires were installed about two months ago. The seller states the exterior was completely refinished several years ago under the original ownership following a minor incident on the left front corner. Some small dings and scratches are also noted in the paint. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The black interior features optional leather Sport Seats, a four-spoke leather steering wheel, air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, a quartz clock, and a stereo system. The seller indicates the air conditioning system has been updated and the shifter bushings were replaced. The stereo and speakers are recommended for replacement due to age and the radio antenna is inoperable. The seller states the odometer previously failed and was repaired, and the car’s actual mileage is unknown.

Rated at 217 HP, the air-cooled 3.2-liter flat-six engine delivers power to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential. The M491 Turbo-look package equips the car with the uprated cross-drilled brakes and suspension components of the 930 Turbo. The seller notes the engine has been rebuilt and some minor oil leaks are present.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “A great driver quality, one owner, ROW, original M491 turbo look car that looks and runs great.”

@cavallino87 When I originally made the listing, I had said I wanted a reserve. Which is why it says that. But a few days ago I spoke to @pcarmarket and told them I wanted to lift the reserve and let the car sell to the highest bidder. Maybe they didn’t change it but rest assured highest bid buys the car.

  • cavallino87 (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@drola - Are you sure about the No Reserve status? The Auction Type shows Reserve under the title photograph. Or are you just saying that you will accept the high bid to close the sale regardless of whether it hits the PCM reserve?

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@PM27 The import was done in 1986 and has been fully titled, registered and insured ever since. And yes, I do have a Florida title in hand ready to transfer to the new owner.

  • PM27 (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

Can you clarify the title/import is complete and is fully US titled and transferrable with no issues. do you have Florida title in hand?

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@sixt7L36 As the listing clearly states, the odometer was broken for a number of years and true mileage is unknown. Surely has more than what the odometer shows. I had it repaired. Please read the description thoroughly.
    Cheers

Why was the engine rebuilt with such few miles?

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@tonycamodeca That’s the original 4 spoke wheel that comes standard in all the 3.2 Carreras. Funny looking would be a matter of personal perception.
The leather shows patina which I kind of like. Gives it character.
To each his/her own I guess.

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@PM27 I don’t have anything showing work done to the suspension so i would assume it to be all original.
Didn’t have a leak down done. No way to have it done before auction ends. Motor pull strong and blows no smoke so never really thought it necessary.

  • tonycamodeca (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

That is a funny looking 4 spoke wheel! I like the 3 spoke better anyways!!

This car looks and runs great! Saw it at our last Aircooled breakfast!

  • PM27 (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

Have any enhancements been done like Turbo Tie rods? or does M491 come with them?
Has suspension been serviced? replacement shocks or rubber/wear parts?
Do you have a leak down test on the engine?

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

One thing I forgot to mention. There is NO RESERVE on this sale. The highest bidder takes the car home. Hopefully it will brighten up someone’s holiday season !!!

M491 wide for the win, beautiful in Guards Red. In the South Florida community, this seller is easily one of our most wise, and humble. GLWS!!!

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

Another thing worthy of mentioning. The air conditioning in this car is excellent. It has an upgraded condenser on the rear decklid with two big fans pulling air through it at all times. You can see them in the pictures of the engine in the gallery.
Stays nice and cool even on a hot South Florida day.

I just uploaded a short video of the car up in the air showing how well the LSD is working. I just recently changed the fluid in the transmission with Penn Grade Limited Slip 80w90 GL5. I had never used it before but it seems to work pretty well. Another good thing about this transmission, being an ROW, is that it has the external oil cooler as you can see in the pics.

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@Gefiltefunk Back to your question, looking over the invoice I don't see that they changed any of the specs on the motor. I do see they used ARP head studs and ARP rod bolts and nuts which is a good thing. I uploaded pics of the invoice into the gallery so feel free to take a look.

@drola Thanks, I've seen lots of ECUs swapped when federalizing cars from back in the day. Dummy ( not connected O2 sensors etc. Hence the ask.

@Gefiltefunk i will have to look at the invoices for the rebuild to see what spec. I don’t see any reason why they would have built it to anything other than what it originally was, but I will double check.
As far as the ecu, i will post a pic of the sticker in the gallery. I’m trying to add the part numbers here, but the format thinks I’m trying to share contact information and will not let me add it. From what I could find online it is the original ROW ecu. Unless some shop swapped it out without the owner knowing, I see no reason why it would ever have been changed.
I will report back this evening with the specs on the rebuild.

  • Gefiltefunk (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@drola Rebuilt engine? Was it done to Euro Specs? Top end only or full rebuild? Your pelican ad mentions you have a receipt for the engine work. Is the ECU, US or Euro spec? Thanks

  • Coldbru (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

    Thank you for the clarity

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@Coldbru In my first comment I asked @pcarmarket to correct this. I've also sent an email. The car is indeed a 1984 and not a 1986.

  • Coldbru (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

Seller, this car is listed on pelican for sale as a 1984, here it is listed as a 1986. What is the deal? Any title issues?

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

A little bit of background on the car. I bought it from the original owner locally here in Miami. He bought it brand new in Madrid, Spain and imported it into the states in 1986. I have most if not all the paperwork from this. The car was in his wife's name since new but she passed away in 2018 and the title was transferred to him, which is why the Carfax report shows a new owner in 2018. Again, I have all the paperwork showing the history of ownership. I also have all the service records since new including an engine rebuild some 20 years ago by a very reputable shop in Miami.
The car sat in his garage mostly unused since then. When I picked it up, the tires had like new tread on them but were completely square from sitting so long. The a/c was not working. I have since fixed it and it really does blow cold, even in the south Florida heat !!
The odometer was non-operational for many years so the exact and true mileage is unknown. Like I mentioned, most of this time the just car sat and sat in his garage so it's unlikely that too many more miles than the 48k showing on the odometer, which is also what the invoice says at the time of rebuild.
The car is beautiful from any angle. It does show some minor scratches and such from normal use. The car did have a repaint many years ago because of a minor incident on the left front corner. There is a pic in the gallery that shows this.
I rate this car as a good condition driver. It's a car you can drive and not be overly concerned, which to me is the best kind of car !!
Again, feel free to ask any questions.

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

Hello and welcome !! I am here to answer any questions you may have, shoot any pics and videos to show anything you may want to see. Feel free to ask any questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability.
@pcarmarket - please correct the model year to 1984 and also the ROW 3.2l puts out 231 hp and not the 217 stated.
