Up for auction is this nicely-presented 1985 Porsche Carrera Cabriolet Turbo Look finished in Guards Red over a black leather interior. First offered in 1984, the M491 “Turbo Look” package gave customers the option to add the widened body styling, suspension and brakes of the Turbo model to a standard naturally aspirated Carrera. Originally sold in Florida, this 1985 example was purchased by its current owner in 2006 with only a few thousand miles added since that time. Reported to be in outstanding highly original condition, this factory Turbo Look Carrera is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner with approximately 72k miles showing on the odometer.
The Guard’s Red finish is noted to be in excellent condition and the black cabriolet top is also said to be in great shape. A collection of detailed images has been provided in the photo gallery. The optional M491 Turbo Look package adds widened front and rear fenders, a front spoiler extension and a distinctive tea-tray rear wing. This Carrera features black stone guards and factory Fuchs wheels which have been professionally refinished to as-new standards.
Inside, you will find a black leather interior with an upgraded Alpine radio. The cabin is noted to be in fantastic condition and the seller confirms that the original radio will also be included in-sale. All gauges, electrical components and accessories are reported to be fully functional.
This Carrera is equipped with its original air-cooled 3.2 L flat-six engine which sends 207 HP to the rear wheels by way of a number’s matching 5-speed manual transmission. The M491 package also adds Turbo-spec brakes and suspension providing for improved cornering and stopping power. A straight pipe exhaust system and cat-delete have been installed for enhanced sound, although the original exhaust will be also included in-sale. Routine maintenance has been performed and this 911 is stated to be in excellent running order. The seller indicates that a fresh oil and filter change will be carried out prior to delivery.
The sale of this 911 will include the original books, tools and a set of two keys. Do not miss out on your chance to own this factory Turbo Look Carrera Cabriolet.

@MikeC will 50 get it?
@jsmedra I get you , but I truly believe that mine is one of the nicest out there . Gotta buy the one that you really want . Euro headlight will bolt right in , I like that look too , may do it if car don’t sell . It’s been a pleasure exchanging with you , and thanks to amoroso
@Fjamoroso Colorado is a tough one to pass. I just don’t want to run into an expense getting it to pass
Wish the car had euro headlight rings.
We’ll see where bidding goes.
There’s 2 other 491s for sale right now too.
@Caymanorcarrera I assume you meant "cat" sensitive? For CA emissions purposes, it either needs to be an OE unit or a C.A.R.B. approved replacement unit to pass the visual portion of the test. Again, for CA. @MikeC is including the original cat with this sale though, so that's all good.
These cars do run much better without a cat and get closer to the R.O.W. 930/25 power and torque outputs as a result (especially in conjunction with a matching chip, like the ones that Steve Wong offers at www.911chips.com).
Beautiful car. GLWA
@Fjamoroso......is it really cap sensitive?
Ditto @fjamoroso
And.....for all you Pcarmkt junkies,........Mr. Amoroso knows these cars inside and out, and might love them even more than ME!
@Fjamoroso I feel the pain with just about every other air cooled owner . Heat waves are not kind to that car , I normally drive it before and after summer with a hoodie on . Car performs so much better on seventy degree days
@CurtGT3RS I looked at the car fax , it seems that I put about 9000 miles on it in fourteen years . Tires probably have somewhere around 8000 on them , almost new
@Caymanorcarrera Nice seeing you here. Given the heatwave, that drive sounds PAINFUL!
Functional AC is the ULTIMATE luxury in a G Body. It's possible, but pretty difficult and / or expensive to achieve. I don't know why, but my '87 with a stock system, filled with R134, achieves... 32 degree F vent temps. Again, I don't know why and I dare not question it, lest I anger the P Car gods. The AC on my '88 is another story. It's the last piece before that car is done.
@Fjamoroso I have the original cat , it will go to new owner if reserve is met . Thanks
@jsmedra It appears as if the top is manual, which is a BIG plus in my book. I don't see either the power top operation indicator light on the instrument panel (between oil combo gauge and tachometer) or the power top transmission access holes (for emergency manual operation) in the rear trim pieces (located above the rear speakers).
If you are talking about CA emissions, you will need a factory cat (or a CA certified replacement unit) AND a stock airbox to pass the visual portion of the emissions test. It *may* pass the sniffer portion of the test as configured, but you'll still fail the visual without the right cat and airbox. Either way, plug in the brown wire at the DME ECU for the test (it leans the mixture).
Bid in the amount of $45,000
@MikeC Happy to help. I'm more than a bit obsessed with M491s and can answer most any question. I used to work on these cars back in the day. Loved them then, LOVE them now. I currently have two G50 491 / 470s...

@Fjamoroso Thanks for educating us all , and helping to answer doubters
@CurtGT3RS Sorry as far as I know the engine has never been apart or butchered in any way , at least not while I’ve owned it
@CurtGT3RS I’m almost positive that paint is original because there is no clear coat . No leaks what so ever , I’m proud of that actually . Tires I’m pretty sure date back to 06 , but are close to new . Gotta look at the inspection records on the car fax to know just how many pampered miles are on the tires , very few . Hard to find a nicer one . Make a bid . Thanks
Many early M491s did not show the option code on the underhood / owners manual sticker. Porsche worked in mysterious ways back in the day.
An easy way to confirm a factory M491 is that the rear brake calipers are trailing mounted, like on a 930. Standard Carreras have their brake calipers leading edge mounted. Someone *could* swap 930 rear trailing arms onto a standard Carrera during a conversion, but the chances of that are very *low.*
Lots of information on these special cars available here...
https://www.turbo-look.com/
... including a VIN lookup via the registry. This VIN shows the car to be an authentic 1985 M491.
GLWA
I’m late, so forgive questions that may have been answered. Is it all original paint? What are the date codes on the tires? Has any other engine work, besides routine maintenance been done? Does it leak any oil?
@87930 I’d like to speak to you , but this auction site won’t let me send you my email or phone number . Stupid right ? I want to know if you will mail me that certificate . I’d like to speak with you in person too . If reserve is not met , I’ll probably keep it . Selling it because I rarely use it , I’m very anal about that car , it’s beautiful . I live on Long Island and we pay some of the highest taxes in the nation yet they don’t fix the roads around here anymore . To break a wheel in a pot hole would be devastating . Gonna try to get in personal touch with you through my rep at pcar . Hope to hear from you Mike
@Baggedbug I hope that the certificate of authenticity that was posted answers your question . Original owner stumbled onto my listing and contacted me . A good porsche dealer can look it up also , I kno because I did it with a 491 that I looked at when I was shopping for mine in 2006. One of the nicest ones out there make a bid
Bid in the amount of $40,000
@Caymanorcarrera Yes , I’ve owned two Porsche’s , one a 1984 coupe , a friend of mine has owned three , the air conditioners just can’t keep up , that’s the beauty of a cabrio
Very interesting to see the spoilers and the turbo body called out separately. My 85 shows as one option, the "turbo look". These COAs changed over the years. LSD too! Nice to have.
I have this exact car in a coupe with 20K more miles.
Same deal with my car. The M491 not on the option code, but on the CoT.
Very happy to have this one here. Mine was in Carmel last Friday. So fun......it always draws lots of love!
The drive home to San Mateo that afternoon w-o a/c......not so fun )-:
This is a beautiful example of a M491.
I can’t back up a bid right now or I’d gladly be in the running here. GLWA
@MikeC Original owner saw the listing and sent me that certificate of authenticity yesterday . What are those chances ? Look for part that says 930 body option .
@Baggedbug I hope you hit reserve too
@jsmedra Certificate of authenticity is now posted . Original owner saw the listing and contacted me yesterday and set photo of it . What are those chances ?
@87930 Thankyou , my guy got it
@Baggedbug certificate of authenticity is posted
I’m not trying to insult the car I like it. I’ve been looking at other “ turbo look cars” and they Have the 491 option and this does not. Maybe there is some way to get it made without the factory code and still be factory. Surely someone can school me on this and my little knowledge. All that said I’ve got a number and just hope we can hit the reserve
A photo of the certificate of authenticity has been added to the auction listing page.
I'm looking at a copy of the CA dated 3/19/95. It clearly states "491-930 Performance Body/Chassis". I could send a photo if I knew where to send it.
@87930 Thankyou , people are questioning if it’s a true 491 , I want to get that photo up before end of auction
@jsmedra top manual , will pass inspection in New York , after 25 years they do a visual safety inspection , no emissions . I have the original cat , and intend to give it to buyer , it bolts right back in . Yes a true 491 .
@Baggedbug - good question
@MikeC 1-is the top manual or electric- and
2-if it doesn't have cats on it - it wont pass inspection
correct?
3- is it a true 491? ( not on the tag)
@MikeC I sent my email thru "contact seller". I'll take a picture of it and send it to you.
I’m probably wrong so please correct me if I am but.... all the m491 cars I’ve seen have 491 on
The options sticker. Is this a true m491 car or a look a like. Either way it’s very nice and I’m watching closely. Anyone correct me?
@87930 That’s great , I’d love to have it . How would you get it to me ? Thanks again . Mike
I owned the car in Naples FL about twenty five years ago. Sold it to a dealer in Chicago. I have a copy of the CA if you want it.
@RMC1 No the ac is not operational , they never work anyway so I removed the belt
Checking to see if A/C is operational
@porschemeister I don’t know . The exhaust is straight piped because it runs a lot better that way , but I have the original catalytic converters
@MikeC I do oil changes myself
@JNasty Haven’t replaced any parts other than brake pads , never needed to . I barely ever drive it other than to keep it fresh
@jsmedra Yes by end of auction
any way to get a video up of some running engine shots?
@MikeC - parts receipts? List of what done when?
is it a 49 or 50 state car (CA)?
@JNasty No , always serviced it myself
@seller, any service records on the car?
