The genesis of Audi’s legendary all-wheel-drive system and the platform for its championship-winning Group B rally car, the original “Ur” Quattro was produced from 1980 until 1991, with only 664 examples sold in the United States during a four-year period. This 1985 example is one of 73 cars produced for the U.S. during the model year and comes finished in Alpine White over a black leather interior. It features rare factory Ronal wheels, optional heated seats, and a sunroof. The car was purchased by a close friend of the seller’s approximately 30 years ago when it was stored with his car collection. In early 2020, it changed hands with another friend who carried out a full repaint. Acquired by the seller in November 2001, this rare Ur Quattro is now being offered for auction out of New Jersey with approximately 71k miles showing on the odometer.

Partially hand-built on a dedicated assembly line, the Ur Quattro was largely based on the Audi 80 Coupe and features distinctive bodywork with flared wheel arches designed by Martin Smith. Other characteristic details include a raised black rear spoiler, side skirts, an integrated front chin spoiler, horizontal vents below C-pillar vents, and gradient Audi ring decals on the doors. This example is finished in Alpine White and features revisions for the 1985 model year facelift including a sloping front grille and different headlights, trim, and badging. It comes equipped with an optional sunroof and factory body-colored 15”x8” Ronal wheels mounted with new BF Goodrich G Force Rival tires in 2021. The seller notes the car was completely disassembled and refinished in its original color between 2020 and 2021. The exterior is said to remain in excellent overall condition and images from the painting process are included in the gallery.

Inside, this Audi features black leather upholstery with manually adjustable front bucket seats and matching “COUPE” logo floor mats. Accessories include optional heated seats, a four-spoke steering wheel, a black leather shift knob, power windows, air conditioning, a differential switch, digital oil temperature and voltage meters, an aftermarket Alpine stereo, and analog VDO instrumentation with an inset clock and turbo boost gauge. The seller indicates the driver’s seat bolster is weak and the interior lights do not turn on when opening the doors as the door jamb button buttons are missing. Some signs of wear are also noted on the driver’s seatback and rear seat carpet.

This Audi is equipped with a turbocharged and intercooled 2.1-liter inline 5-cylinder engine rated at 160 HP. All four wheels are driven through a 5-speed manual transaxle with locking center and rear differentials. Standard equipment includes fully independent suspension, power-assisted steering, and four-wheel disc brakes. The seller indicates the timing belt and water pump were replaced in 2019 and an oil service was recently completed.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “The Audi Ur (Original) Quattro was state of the art and the first car to have a true all-wheel-drive system that was developed for Group B Rally Racing where these cars dominated.  They are a thrill to drive and rare.  With only 73 U.S. production cars, this makes this a very collectible and rare find.”

@marcar The car was always Alpine White, so no color change. There are photos of the car being painted towards the end of the gallery and you can see its original color as they were sanding and prepping prior to the grey primer. I don't have other photos prior to that. My pleasure.

  • marcar (registered bidder) 7 months, 3 weeksago

What was the original color of the car? Do you have any pics of the car prior to restoration? I appreciate your timely replies.

@marcar Thanks for the question and as answered in a comment below. "Yes, we believe that it is. The car was in storage for 30 years, before being brought out and refinished. Being on the road for only the first 9 years of the car's life, would support that belief."

  • Ambassador-Auto (seller) 7 months, 3 weeksago

To all bidders/lookers that have asked about the title or the CarFax. the reason I have asked people to reach directly to me is because there is a personal health issue with the owner who had it in storage originally and we are not able to get any more info from him or ask him to help clear up the title or Carfax issue. There is nothing more to share except the details of his illness, which I prefer to discuss privately. I hope all understand. There is no other information that I am not sharing with the audience.

You ad states that the odometer has "approximately 71k miles showing on the odometer." are these the only original miles on the engine and car?

    @Ambassador-Auto Seller,
There are several people interested in this car. Your response to Mark suggests that you have more information regarding the Carfax salvage title issue. This information should be shared with all in this comment thread.

  • Ambassador-Auto (seller) 7 months, 3 weeksago

@mark1gti Mark, thanks for the questions. I think the easiest way to discuss is for you to private message me so we can actually get on a phone call. Please reach out through private message with your number and I will be happy to spend some time. Thanks

Hello, It states that your friend bought it 30 years ago, but the salvage title was issued in CT only 24 years ago. It was inspected in CT 2x only a couple years prior to that, which would put it in your friends ownership time during all that time. It was then registered in VT 10 days after that salvage title was issued in CT. Either your friend owned it for 20 years 2000-2020 (since it looks like you took title in 2021) or they must know a back story to the CT title issue. Serious buyer looking for real clarification. Thank you!

@Bdubs thanks for the question, yes, the sunroof comes off with the slide of two pins and slides on two brackets on the underside of the rear shelf in the trunk.

  • Bdubs (registered bidder) 7 months, 3 weeksago

Had one of these back in college - the memories, no one understand when I said 5 cylinder. Does the sunroof still come off and slide into the trunk holders?

Have there been any engine, ECU, or performance modifications done or is everything stock? Thanks!

  • Ambassador-Auto (seller) 7 months, 4 weeksago

@Tartan43 Thanks for the question. We dd not reach out to Carfax, as it is very hard to get a correction when it was not done under your ownership. The previous clean title that I have from the prior owner was a NJ title. I know he first registered at his house in Vermont, but then put the house on the market and reregistered it at his NJ home. I have copies of his NJ title as well as the title in our dealership name. If you would like to see them, please private message me. Thanks

  • Tartan43 (registered bidder) 7 months, 4 weeksago

@Ambassador-Auto have you tried a correction request from CARFAX? What was their response? Was the previous clean title a Connecticut Title?

  • Joevant (registered bidder) 7 months, 4 weeksago

What a great looking car shame about the title issues! Hopefully the reserve is priced accordingly this would make a great driver for someone

@HelpMeHelpU Yes, we believe that it is. The car was in storage for 30 years, before being brought out and refinished. Being on the road for only the first 9 years of the car's life, would support that belief.

  • Ambassador-Auto (seller) 7 months, 4 weeksago

@justinstephen Saying clean title is not a misrepresentation. The title that we have is a clean NJ title, which is accurate, and the title that I received from the prior owner before flipping it to us was also a clean title. If you private message me, I am happy to provide you with copies of both. Regarding the salvage on the Carfax, we do not know why Connecticut marked it as a salvage title since the car was complete without any bad history for the past 30 years.

  • HelpMeHelpU (registered bidder) 7 months, 4 weeksago

@Ambassador-Auto Do you have any reason to believe the odometer is inaccurate? It shows ~71k miles.

  • justinstephen (registered bidder) 8 monthsago

Saying “Clean title” when the CarFax shows a salvage title is a misrepresentation. Please update the listing description.

  • Ambassador-Auto (seller) 8 monthsago

@maladent I am not sure why it was marked as a salvage title. It was that way when my friend purchased it 30 years ago. It currently has a clean NJ title in my Dealership Name. All gauges, power windows work as they should. The motor had a timing belt done in 2019 but I was never told it was rebuilt. The trans shifts nicely. Stops straight and well. The suspension feels fine, but a little soft. There are no apparent leaks, and it is as dry as the undercarriage photos show in the gallery. The car sat on the high rack of one of our stacker lifts for quite a while and never dripped a drop during that time. I hope that helps.

@maladent The A/C was blowing cold during out test drive. I will run it again on Monday when we are back in the shop.
