The MK1 Volkswagen Golf arrived in the North American market as the Rabbit in 1975, and in 1983 the high-performance GTI version would follow. This 1984 MK1 GTI comes finished in black over a red cloth interior and features a 1.8L inline-four cylinder engine paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle, a sunroof, 14″ “snowflake” wheels, air conditioning, and more. Under previous ownership, the car was upgraded with KW V1 Coilovers, a catback exhaust system, and European specification bumpers. It is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New Jersey while showing just over 75k miles on its odometer.
Styled by famed designer Giorgetto Giugario, the original Golf was intended to replace the Volkswagen Beetle. This example comes finished in black with a red pinstripe and features a red-accented grille and black wheel arch extensions unique to GTI models. According to the seller, the car was refinished under previous ownership and shows very well aside from a few spots of surface rust around the rear quarter windows and a few rock chips. Euro specification bumpers were fitted by the previous owner and a set of 14” “snowflake” wheels have been installed.
The cabin features front sports seats and a rear bench upholstered in red cloth with multi-color stripe inserts. Amenities include a rear window defroster, a golf ball-style shift knob, and a sunroof. The seller reports that the front seats show a few small tears and that the previous owner installed an auxiliary water temperature gauge. All gauges, electronics, and accessories are said to remain functional. An uninstalled air conditioning retrofit is said to accompany the car.
Power comes from a naturally aspirated 1.8L inline-four engine, which drives the front wheels by way of a 5-speed manual transaxle. Under previous ownership, the car was upgraded with KW coilover suspension and a Techtonics Tuning cat-back exhaust system. Service under previous ownership is said to have included a new timing belt and fuel pump, while service under the care of the seller has included a new alternator.
This sale will include the original steering wheel and a clean title. A mileage discrepancy is shown on the CARFAX report under previous ownership.

Back in the day, I owned two GTIs, and '83 and an '84. Possibly the most fun cars I ever owned, and my wife and I have owned nine Porsches and four or five Audis. They were one of few cars I could just drive around with my right foot planted, and just shift and steer as needed.

I have an 83 Rabbit Pickup Diesel. These cars will run forever as long you take care of basics (oil change, not skipping gears, coolants, away from snow, salt for any rust).
I am replacing my brake master cylinder, bleeding all brakes. Mine has been sitting for 2 years.. so yeah this needs to be driven just like any other German car.
It is a fun car and definitely reliable, not like todays VW car.

The only MK1 I never got to own, and will never forget the red on blue that I nearly bought as my first car in the early 90s.

I added a video and picture. I received a couple messages asking about rot. The floors are solid, just have been pushed up in jack points and there I cracking from the poor undercoating job done before my ownership. Hope this helps with anyone who had those questions
