With its detachable roof panel and distinctive roll-over hoop, the Targa is among the most iconic Porsche 911 models. Powered by its flat-six engine which has been fully rebuilt and upgraded to a 3.4-liter displacement, this 1984 Targa was stripped to bare metal and refinished in Black over custom grey upholstery. Additional modifications include RUF Yellowbird-style bumpers, Euromeister Fuchs-style wheels, LED lighting, power-operated 964 full leather seats, a 917-style wooden shift knob, a custom short shifter, 98mm Mahle pistons and cylinders, 964 cams, a custom 911 SW Chip, and much more. This extensively restored 911 Targa is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Virginia.
Following the seller’s acquisition in 2018, this example has undergone a professional two-stage refinished in Black (A1) after a complete disassembly for repairs along with blasting and coating of frame parts. The Targa top was also completely restored, the Targa bar was stripped to reveal a brushed stainless finish, and all of the door, roof, window, and trunk seals were replaced. Modifications include RUF Yellowbird-style fiberglass bumpers, 993 power-adjustable mirrors, LED headlights with Morimoto inserts, front LED daytime running lights, and staggered-width 17” Euromeister Fuchs-style wheels with 215/45 and 245/40 tires. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin has been completely restored, including 8-way power-adjustable 964 full leather front seats re-dyed from tan to grey. The seller notes the driver’s seat has a small crack, which was repaired before re-dying. Matching, grey-upholstered door panels have been fitted, including a custom diamond-stitched pattern, armrests, and RS-style door pulls. Grey follows the lower dashboard, contrasted with black upper panels and a leather-wrapped MOMO Prototipo steering wheel, which frames upgraded LED instrumentation with brushed aluminum bezels. Other custom appointments include a 917-style wooden shift knob, a short shifter, and the removal of the rear seats revealing a storage area and housing for the speakers. The Targa top headliner was also replaced, new carpets were fitted, the air conditioning system was removed, and the front trunk was upgraded with a custom easily removable trunk liner. Additionally, the seller states a replacement odometer showing 78,730 miles was installed at 108,137 miles.
Power has been upgraded with a fully rebuilt 3.4-liter flat-six engine. The original engine is said to have been removed during prior ownership and left stationary for approximately 10 years, which was later acquired and reinstalled by the seller. The engine features 98mm Mahle pistons and cylinders, 964 cams, and a custom 911 SW Chip. Cylinder heads were rebuilt by Ollies Engineering with new valve guides, valves, springs, and a 3-angle valve job. The rockers were refurbished with new bushings, and the crankshaft was restored to factory specifications by Crankshaft Marine. Additional upgrades include a Supertec head stud kit, Raceware connecting rod bolts, and a stainless steel fan hold-down strap, as well as new timing chains, ramps, bearings, cooling fan, housing, and alternator components. External engine parts were media-blasted, powder-coated, or replated as needed. The engine produces up to 217 HP, delivered to the rear wheels via a fully rebuilt 915 5-speed manual transmission from a 1978 911SC, equipped with new bearings and several replaced components. A SACHS power clutch kit was installed, axle shafts were replaced, and the suspension components were blasted and powder-coated, with all worn parts replaced, including Bilstein sport shocks and strut inserts. The brake system was overhauled with new rotors, rebuilt calipers, and new lines and hoses.
This sale will include a clean title, a toolkit, a spare tire, and an air pump.
The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting my auction. I finished the build of this Targa 4 almost years ago. The engine was completely rebuilt last year in the spring and upgraded to 3.4. When I bought the car, it had 108,137 miles on the odometer, which the previous owner said was the actual miles. Also shown in the title. Since the speedometer was in a rough condition. I replaced it with a new one which had 78,730 miles on the odometer. Now the total miles on the chassis is 110,964. This is a fun car to drive and ready to find a new owner. I will answer all questions as well as I can.”

@CarNutinMiami I have the following components: Front and rear condenser, Evaporator unit which goes in the smugglers box, the front protection screen and bar.
Do you still have the AC components?
@JJensen The car was driven about 2800 miles since it was finished 2020. However, the engine was finished last year in May and installed. The Engine has about 1100 miles since installed. I used another engine during 2020 and last year May. The pictures were done at the time the car was listed.
How many miles has the car been driven since paint and interior and were these pictures taken at the time the car was listed ?

I like to add that the 217HP shown on the Dyno chart is wheel horsepower, which is about 250HP at the flywheel.
@emuelhaupt @emuelhaupt-I am guessing it will, thanks. Nice job on the build
@pma2021 I'm not familiar with the CA smog test. However, the exhaust is complete stock, including heat exchanger, cat, OX sensor and muffler. Take a look at the image with the dyno chart. You can see that the air/fuel ratio is in a very good range. Sorry if this is not helpful.

@emuelhaupt-Do you know if this would pass smog in CA? Thanks

@emuelhaupt It worked. Thank you!
@VertexAuto - I found a short video just after the engine was installed and started up. Not sure if the link works in the comment.

I’m looking for a coupe rather than a Targa, but this beautiful and meticulously prepared example has me rethinking my choice. Seller, great work here IMO, thx for giving this one a new life.

Thanks for the quick response.
@greg7334 Good question about the AC. We used the car during the nice time of the year and enjoyed driving without the Targa top. Also those original AC systems do not really work that good. I was considering to install an electric AC, if I would have kept the car.
@rberg1022 I did the engine build myselft. The heads were done by Ollie's Engineering, and the 964 Cams were done by Dougherty Racing Cams. New set of Mahle 98mm piston and cylinders.
Hi, Great presentation and detail. Very attractive with quality upgrades. I noted the A/C was removed. Could your provide more detail as to why? I live in Florida and car with no AC limits its usability. Thanks, Greg
Which shop did the rebuild on the motor?
Bid in the amount of $19,840
@VertexAuto I will see if I can do a video over the weekend.
Thanks to all for the nice comments.
The seller is an incredibly meticulous and skilled metalworker and builder. I have seen this car numerous times as well as many other cars built by the seller. It is absolutely gorgeous. I can’t imagine a buyer being disappointed.
Amazing build. Love the documentation and presentation. Great job! Can you post a video of just the engine running with the deck lid open? Thank you!
Beautiful 911 with just the right modern touches. You did an awesome job on bringing this 911 back for another 40 years of enjoyment for the next owner! GLWTA
Great looking build. Personally , i like to see the underneath and mechanical of a car as clean as the topside. This car is just that! GLWTA
