Reimagined by the specialists at ROCS Motorsports, this 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe was commissioned as an extensive custom backdate restoration between 2020 and 2021.  The ROCS “Philadelphia 911” was crafted as a highly individual build including weathered dark blue paint, faded racing graphics, classic long-hood bodywork, and a vintage-style interior with custom bucket seats and hand-distressed red leather upholstery.  The car has also been upgraded with a Steve Wong performance chip, SSI headers, and Dansk muffler, while its engine and gearbox were fully rebuilt prior to the custom restoration.  Showcasing impeccable craftsmanship and attention to detail, this custom one-off ROCS 911 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Pennsylvania.

During the ROCS restoration, the styling of the car was backdated with custom fitted long-hood bodywork finished in distressed blue paint. Other details include handpainted and aged Porsche stripes and racing graphics, vintage leather hood straps, 911R lexan rear quarter windows, 911R-style taillights, a fiberglass RS-style rear bumper, exposed oil cooler lines, a custom twin-grille rear decklid, and modern projector beam headlights.  The 16” Fuchs wheels come finished with gold-painted centers and silver outer lips, dressed in a set of Pirelli P Zero Rosso tires sized 205/55 in front and 245/45 in the rear.

The hand-patinaed interior has been redone with distressed red leather RS-style door panels, grey perlon felt carpeting, a custom black leather dashboard, and custom bucket seats with corduroy centers and ROCS emblems in the backrests.  Other additions include a vintage three-spoke MOMO steering wheel, painted roll bar, race-style floorboards, and an emergency cutoff switch in place of the analog clock.  The power windows have been retained, although there is no air-conditioning or sound system present.

Prior to the custom restoration by ROCS, the air-cooled 3.2L flat-six engine was fully rebuilt along with the 5-speed manual gearbox by Elite Motors of New Jersey in 2015. The engine has been upgraded with new SSI heat exchangers, a Dansk sport muffler, and a Steve Wong performance chip. Corresponding records are provided for reference in the gallery detailing the incredible amount of mechanical work and refurbishment that has gone into this build.

Offered with a clean title and documented restoration history, this one-of-a-kind 911 backdate is ready to be enjoyed by a new owner.

With the price of the original car and the mechanical work this car cost over $200k. You could get ROCS to build you one but you'd be into it for a lot more money and you're looking at waiting a couple years.

@wanna123 as has been discussed earlier in the comments and in the write up. The engine was completely rebuilt, the exhaust is SSI and sports muffler, also a Steve Wong chip was added. The suspension was totally refreshed and then lowered appropriately. Those mods along with all the weight reduction results in a very quick and agile car.

Whats on the dashboard? Is that a dash cover?

  • DontLift80 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

This is a fantastic build. I had the opportunity to drive this special car for Rich to the Greenwich Concours. The car is a vision executed, with attention to minor details putting this build into its own category. There is artistry in the paint and nuance in the distressed interior. Pictures don’t do it justice. It will give endless on-ramp induced smiles, thumbs up from every passing car and is sure to make the next owner looking for excuses to take her out. GLWS!!

  • Vipnyc (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

I’ve seen this build in person and it is stunning. Rich at ROCS really knocked it out of the park on this one. I echo the comment of the others - this car has a real soul and was put together with a proper vision in mind.

I was just wondering where exactly the spreadsheet of costs is, that is referred to in the comments. Apologies if I’ve missed it somewhere. Is it accessible from the ad somehow? Thanks in advance.

  • HowS (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@tds993 the hardest part about adding the front vent windows is going to be finding the parts. I don't ever recall seeing repro parts for that either.

I don't have an official number on the weight loss but you have sunroof delete, ac delete, fiberglass bumpers front, back and hood, rear seat delete, lexan rear side windows. All of that adds up to quite a bit.

Zero rust. Infact no rust repair was even needed during the body mods.

I'll double check on the shifter but having driven it and as you can see in the photos I don't think it's a wevo.

  • tds993 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

There's a lot to love about this build. Clearly much thought was given! I too would do a build like this without radio and ac. In fact, I wonder if anyone knows how difficult adding working vent windows would be? I do have a couple questions. There's mention this has been lightened considerably. How much and how? I see mention of sunroof cables, etc. Did this once have a sunroof? Is gearing stock? Is the shifter stock or any WEVO upgrades? Lastly, I sold an '84 Targa recently and learned the hard way rust can develop at the underside of the rear door jambs from dirt/mud being flung up from the rear wheels. Can you comment?

The art cars that we create at ROCS, whether full builds or Demi-builds, are always the product of a lot of thought in collaboration with the client and laborious execution. For me and for so many folks, this car hits all the visuals but it is also important to note that it is comfortable and very driveable. I love that folks seem to get what we do. GLWS

  • Jimbo1907 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@HowS got it and thank you. It is very well done. I haven't seen one like it, which I guess is part of the point.

  • HowS (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@Jimbo1907 wrosato beat me to the punch. He's spot on. This is a one off complete custom. Its not a "tribute" car. There was an extreme amount of time and thought put into every aspect of the car. The car was designed exceptionally well both a visually and mechanically. Plenty of cars can be a mash of high quality parts just bolted together. This is NOT one of those.

This car is exceptionally well engineered, to make sure it runs and drives above and beyond while still delivering the unique look that was desired.

  • wrosato 2 years, 7 monthsago

@Jimbo1907 This is an original...not a tribute or copy, just an exceptionally designed and detailed backdated 911 done by a true artist, ROCS Motorsports
you can look at the website for other examples of his work

  • Jimbo1907 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Just curious, and pardon my ignorance: is this car a tribute to a previous car, or a copy of a vintage racer? I'm trying to figure out the theme of this build, which seems very carefully done, and haven't been able to understand it. Thank you.

  • Haltung (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@Msweed I need to correct my earlier comment. Just under 4k miles since the full rebuild.

57 years old I need my glasses for anything I read.

  • HowS (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@Msweed its not just the costs, its the time too. ROCS will take your name but you're looking 18 to 24 months minimum.

  • HowS (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@Msweed about 5000 since the motor / trans rebuild.

Of course the new owner will get the original copies with the figures on them too.

  • HowS (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

I just send a spread sheet with all of the costs on the build over to Pcar. I expect they'll post it shortly.

Understand that the costs would be even greater today. Same with the acquisition of the original car. Additionally, if you wanted to commission a car from ROCS, you're looking at something like a 2 year wait at this point.

  • HowS (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Here is a link to a cold start and idle. Sorry it was windy so the sound is not as good as usual

I will have the cost totals up today too.

Thanks for taking a look at my auction for this amazing and unique ROCS “Philadelphia” 1984 911 Carrera build.

As you can tell from the description pretty much everything on this car is either rebuilt, restored, or reimagined. Its even more impressive in person and behind the wheel. The car is much more responsive than stock as the result of shedding quite a bit of weight. The addition of the Steve Wong Chip and performance free flowing exhaust makes the car much quicker than any standard 84-89 Carrera. Regarding the suspension… all aspects of the suspension have been refreshed or rebuilt to stock other than the ride height. The T bars are stock but the 7 & 9 in Fuchs with beefy rubber, lower center of gravity and lighter weight really transform the handing. We went for a romp around upper Bucks Country and this car could easily out accelerate, brake and handle my mostly stock 88 coupe.

The thing that really attracts me to this car is the attention to detail that ROCS put into this car. Unlike so many builds you see, which are essentially a lot of parts and styles bolted together. This car had a clear-cut vision with extreme attention to detail. The theme of the car is evident throughout. Every switch, gauge, piece of leather, nut, bolt and body part was crafted with a mission, and they all work extremely well with each other both cosmetically and performance wise. The car is visually striking but without the “look at me” factor of some wild green color or a car like a Lamborghini. When people see it, those who “know” really “know”.

When you see it move and hear it, the sound matches the striking visual statement the car makes. The car has a very visceral feel. I am 6’3” and I have owned dozens of G series cars. The ingress / egress in this car is simple, even for a big guy like me. The steering wheel, peddles and shift lever fall exactly where you’ll want them, as you sit low in the car. The seat support is excellent when you toss the car through the twisties. The cockpit has the true feel and touch of a vintage race car.

With regards to the AC. I have the Griffiths system in my 88 coupe. It works very very well, and it could easily be added to this car. I have not yet used any of the new all electric systems offered these days. I have read quite a bit about them in the last year or so and they also get rave reviews. My sense is either way would work easily.

I monitor all of my auctions closely. If you have any questions post them up, or hit the contact seller button and I will address them as quickly as I can.

    Thanks!

@TangerineT could probably add a classic retrofit AC system still…they work great.

    This car is sexy!

    Very cool build!!
Any suspension modifications made on the car?
If so, what size are the torsion bars and does the car have front and rear sway bars?

    Thanks

@aaltoura It would serve its purpose just fine, the idea being to provide enough cooling air to make the cabin slightly more comfortable when hot and humid.

Beautiful. A brand new car with patina! If it only had AC to make it useable year-round in my part of the country.
