Available for auction is this 1982 DeLorean DMC-12. The DeLorean was assembled in Northern Ireland and only built between January 1981 and December 1982 until the company went bankrupt with approximately 9,000 cars produced. The car is best known for its distinctive stainless-steel bodywork, exotic gullwing doors, and its role as the time machine in the Back to the Future movie franchise. This 5-speed 1982 example remains under the care of its second owner and is now being offered for auction out of California showing just over 3k miles on the odometer.
The brushed stainless-steel bodywork was designed by legendary Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. The exterior is laid over a fiberglass underbody affixed to a steel frame chassis derived from the Lotus Esprit. The SS304 austenitic stainless-steel panels resist corrosion and can be reconditioned using nonmetallic abrasives. Exterior details include gull-wing doors, quad headlamps, front driving lights, rear window louvers, black bumper covers, and dual exhaust outlets. The 14”/15” turbine-style cast-alloy wheels are dressed in Hankook Kinergy ST tires. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
The interior is upholstered in grey Bridge of Weir leather featuring two bucket seats, a matching dashboard, center console, door panels and carpets. Amenities include air conditioning, full power accessories, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, intermittent windshield wipers, a rear cargo net, and an electric rear-window defroster. All electronics and gauges are said to be working properly. The seller notes mild surface corrosion on some fastenings and slight signs of wear are present, detailed images are provided in the photo gallery.
The DeLorean is powered by a mid-mounted 2.85-liter Peugeot-Renault-Volvo (PRV) V6 equipped with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. Up to 130 HP and 153 lb.-ft of torque are sent to the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual transmission. The four-wheel independent suspension includes double wishbones up front and a multilink setup in the rear. Stopping power is handled by power-assisted disc brakes at all four corners. Service carried out by DeLorean Motor Company California in December of 2021 includes new valve cover gaskets, a valve adjustment, new engine mounts, fuel system refurbishment, new thermostat, braided stainless clutch line, A/C recharge, and replacement of various interior and exterior components. Detailed records are provided in the gallery along with the CARFAX report.
