Available for auction at no reserve is this 1981 Porsche 928 finished in Guards Red over a tan and brown interior. Featuring a 4.5L V8 engine driving the rear wheels by way of a 3-speed automatic the 928 was Porsche's premier grand-touring coupe. This 928 was acquired by the seller in 2016 out of Texas. It was subsequently treated to over $40k in service and updates. Some of the notable work done since 2016 includes a full respray, a new dashboard, carpets, and reupholstered seats, new tires, a timing belt service and much more. Now it is being offered for auction by its seller out of Massachusetts, while showing just under 78k miles on the odometer.

This 928 comes finished in Guards Red and features a front chin spoiler, pop-up headlights, and optional body side moldings. In 2017 the entire car was refinished in its original color and the front and rear bumpers, and all glass were replaced. More recently the window and door seals were all replaced by Herb Chambers Porsche of  Boston.  Minor chips are noted on the front bumper and the alignment of the rear hatch is slightly off. Detailed images can be found in the gallery. It rides on a set of 15” phone dial wheels, which have been dressed in a set of Pirelli P600 tires bearing date codes from 2019.

The cabin is upholstered in tan and brown leather with matching carpets, and features a pair of front Sport Seats. In 2020 the interior was completely refurbished with a new crack-free dashboard, new carpet kit, and reupholstered headliner, interior panels, and seats, courtesy of Dr. Vinyl Boston. In the same year a new rewired stereo system was installed as well. Equipment includes air-conditioning, power mirrors and windows, cruise control, and a power sunroof. The seller notes the rear hatch has a small leak and confirms that all gauges, accessories, and electronics are functional.

The naturally aspirated and fuel-injected 4.5-liter V8 engine produces as much as 231 HP and 265 lb.-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a 3-speed automatic transaxle. In 2019 the car reportedly received a new timing belt, struts, tie-rods, brake rotors, a tune-up, and a wheel alignment from Sports Imports of Cape Cod. In 2020 it received a new front wiring harness and battery, and in 2021 new springs, shocks, and door locks were installed. Most recently a full service was performed by  Herb Chambers Porsche.

This sale will include owner’s manuals,  the original stereo system, various extra parts, and a clean title. This 928 presents a fine opportunity to get into a nicely maintained example of Porsche’s classic grand-tourer.

If I win the auction I would need to get this vehicle shipped to North Carolina at my cost. Will you facilitate shipping by making the vehicle available and holding it until it is picked up? I would pay immediately, but shipping might take a week or two.

  • evank96 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@msa615 I would think so but there are a lot of parts so don’t know how you would do that

do you have receipts for the work? thanks

  • evank96 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@thurm3636 timing belt replaced water pump is rebuilt and I bought the car worth 66,800 miles and it now has 77,505 Miles I do not put many miles on my vehicles

  • thurm3636 (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

You state that the car received a "timing belt service". Does that mean the timing belt and water pump were replaced, or does that mean the shop checked the belt tension and called it good? What was the mileage at that time?

  • evank96 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@ChrisF many parts will accompany the vehicle including original Radio reader , wire harnesses, many body parts that came off of a parts vehicle, A collection of clusters for parts if ever needed, and a few other things

  • evank96 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@ChrisF I have added the Carfax report to the gallery also I do not have any pre-repaint pictures of the vehicle the glass all the way around the vehicle was replaced due to paint the car correctly you need to remove every piece of glass and trim so all the trim and glass are brand new and seals we do have very detailed service records that will accompany the car just to keep in mind that the interior alone ran $15k and the parts were over 20k not including the services to the vehicle. AC works fine and the cluster was never replaced it is the factory cluster that came with the vehicle to my knowledge this is a 920 H that was done between 1981 and 82 in the half year with options. Sports Imports of Cape Cod did a lot of the mechanicals and so did Herb Chambers Porsche. The repaint was done by Herb Chambers collision center and the brake and shocks struts and Springs were done by Swedish motors in Brookline

@evank96 - good morning seller, a few questions on your 928: Do you happen to have any photos of the car prior to its repaint during your ownership? Any copies of receipts to back up the $40k in service/updates? Any documentation of mileage on this car, such as service records, CarFax or AutoCheck report? Does the A/C work? Why was all the glass replaced?

A couple of observations: The rear hatch seal appears to be missing, which is likely why there is a reported leak back there. I thought the 1980 and 1981 cars originally came with a 85 mph speedometer (at least both my 80 and 81 928 did), but it wasn't uncommon to be replaced with one more reflective of the car's true potential at some point......any info as to if/when the speedometer in this car might have been replaced?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

A no reserve ar with issues doesn’t often end well for the seller. I suggest you get some concrete answers before the hammer falls.

@pars22 you can bring the stance down more this is the stance that i picked

  • pars22 (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@evank96 I'm very interested, but that's concerning if that's the best stance your experts could achieve. What chance do I have of getting it right?

  • evank96 (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@thurm3636 might be but the shocks are adjustable based on the desired ride height

  • thurm3636 (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@evank96 I believe that the smaller wheels and tires are at least a part of the "odd stance" appearance.

  • evank96 (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

    @thurm3636 good to know thanks

  • thurm3636 (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@pars22, you know these are 15" wheels, right? 15s were an option in '81. Most sharks ride on 16-17" wheels.

  • evank96 (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@checkmate1996 furthermore or took the advice of 928R us as well as 928 international in California

  • evank96 (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@checkmate1996 we have tried our best with the experts that we use and also part availability for this car for shocks are very difficult to find

  • checkmate1996 (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@evank96 For this year they are not suppose to be and in any case you should have presented the car with correct ride height.

  • evank96 (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@checkmate1996 The ride height can be adjustable it is on adjustable shocks

  • checkmate1996 (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@pars22 Ride height is way off. I am not sure what is going on here...

  • checkmate1996 (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@1991928gt Not necessary for an 81 manual.

  • evank96 (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@1991928gt car has been gone through multiple times this year all the mechanicals seem to test OK

  • 1991928gt (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Has a crank shaft walk test recently been done?

  • evank96 (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

    @pars22 yes

  • pars22 (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Is the ride height adjustable in any way? It appears to be riding awfully high in the front.

  • evank96 (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

    Good luck to all bitters
