Available for auction is this 1981 Leyland Mini Moke finished in Matte Space Grey over a black vinyl interior. Originally conceived of as a lightweight military vehicle by the British Motor Company, the Moke would eventually go on to be sold globally as a low-cost, easily maintained light recreational vehicle under the Austin, Morris, Moke, and Leyland brands. This 1981 right-hand drive example was imported from Australia and acquired by the seller in 2006. In 2010, it underwent a comprehensive restoration which included new paint and upholstery, a new top, a custom dashboard, and a custom-built 1,380cc inline-four engine AVONBAR of the U.K. This Moke is now being offered for auction having covered just over 1k miles since its restoration.

The Moke was originally designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, the man behind the design of the original Mini. This Moke was refinished in the current shade of Matte Space Grey during its restoration in 2010 and features a grey canvas Bimini-style soft top with zippered roll-up side windows, black tubular bumpers, twin side mirrors, a rear-mounted spare wheel and tire, and front-mounted Hella rally lights. It rides on a set of grey-finished 10” GB Mini wheels which come dressed in Yokohama A-008 radial tires.

The right-hand-drive four-place cabin is upholstered in black vinyl. All seats are equipped with black safety belts and the footwells are lined with black rubber mats. During its restoration, a custom-made black anodized dashboard was fitted which houses a suite of VDO instrumentation and toggle switches that operate various features. Complementing the dashboard is a black anodized detachable three-spoke steering wheel.

Power comes from a 1,380cc inline four-cylinder engine which was custom built by AVONBAR in the U.K., and is said to produce approximately 120 HP. The front wheels are driven a 4-speed manual transaxle. Stopping power is provided by boosted front discs and rear drums. The seller notes that since the engine was built, oil and filter changes have been performed accordingly.

This sale will include a clean title.

@Vtrap The transmission is in perfect conditions, and yes to engage into reverse you have to pull up and right back, I use both hands.
Sorry I can't send you photos of the underside since I am out of town in a trip.

    Great moke!
Pulling into your garage at the end of the video seemed to require a little muscle to get into reverse; how is the transmission? Lastly, any restoration or underside photos; seems very clean but would be helpful to see. Thank you and good luck with the sale.

@MiniMe Sorry, I do not have pictures with top off. Yes it has good HP for that light weight toy, I never drove it full speed.
I am out of traveling right now so I can't send you photos of the VIN plate.
    Good luck with the bidding!!!

Very interesting restoration! Had a couple questions. Was wondering if you had any pictures without the top on it? New engine looks great - at 120HP seems like it would do pretty well. Any thoughts on top speeds or what it can drive comfortably at? I know its been modified quite a bit so the info may not be too relevant but could you share a picture of the VIN plate? Thanks!

  • ponyup (registered bidder) 1 year, 12 monthsago

Can you explain the Low and High Lights on the Dash?

  • Greggory 1 year, 12 monthsago

Does anyone know how / if this could be registered in California? I can't imagine there are any actual emissions control bits fitted or if there's any EPA sticker on it at all. Maybe it could be registered like a golf cart for city streets only? I wish I knew.
