A luxury high-speed grand touring car, this 1980 Porsche 928 features a 4.5-liter V8 engine driving the rear wheels by way of a desirable 5-speed manual transmission. This 1980 example comes finished in Light Blue Metallic over tan/brown upholstery. Delivered new at Porsche of Carlsbad and reportedly garage-kept since 1981, this lifelong California car is now being offered for auction with approximately 71k miles on the odometer.

This 928 comes finished in Light Blue Metallic and rides on upgraded 16” slotted "manhole cover" alloy wheels with colored Porsche center crests and Hankook tires installed in February of 2017 at approximately 64k miles. Details include pop-up headlights, fog lights, body-colored mirrors, a glass rear hatchback, and a dual-tipped exhaust. The seller reports a minor repair was performed on the rear fender some time ago, the seal is missing on the antenna base, and some slight signs of road wear are present throughout the exterior. Additional images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin presents tan leather upholstery contrasted with a brown dashboard, center console, and door panel inserts. Equipment includes air-conditioning, power windows, cruise control, a center-mounted analog clock, an upgraded Sony head unit, and "928" logo floor mats. The seller notes the driver’s seat has been reupholstered. All gauges, electronics, and accessories are reported to be working properly except for the dashboard lights.

The naturally aspirated and fuel-injected 4.5-liter V8 engine produces as much as 231 HP and 265 lb.-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle. The seller states that the timing belt was replaced and the alternator was rebuilt at 60,872 miles, the cam belt was changed at 60,789 miles, the brakes were serviced at 64,629 miles, the A/C control module was replaced at 69,058 miles, and the shift linkage was rebuilt at 71,012 miles. The latest California state smog inspection was also passed on March 28, 2022, at 69,566 miles.

This sale will include a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: "Thanks for checking out this one owner 928. Kathy bought the car from her brother-in-law in 1981 when he bought a second 928, a 1981. I first saw the car 42 years ago when I went to see my wife at work and Kathy was there. As a 24-year-old car guy, I was so thrilled to check out a "modern" supercar. Kathy was beaming with pride as she bragged about her new car. Always liked the 5-speed and said the blue was Robert Redford eyes blue. Kathy was the only driver since her husband was not a stick driver. She has so many fond memories of the car and is hoping the new owner enjoys the car as much as she has for 4+ decades. I have the original sales contract from Carlsbad Porsche showing the same last name. Additionally, she never modified the car from stock nor abused it. She did tell me she went 90 once. Enjoy the bidding and ask as many questions as you like."

@gdl203 - Kathy had regular routine services done. She didn't have any kind of pre purchase inspection at a dealer or her mechanic done. The time came to sell it and she asked me to help her.

@SoCal928 when was the last time this car was in a shop getting looked through? What was done to it then? Thanks

  • SoCal928 (seller) 11 months, 3 weeksago

I will be online to answer any questions at about 8am PST until the close of the auction. Happy bidding! This is a very nice one owner/driver, unmolested, all original (except redone driver seat), solid driving 928.

  • SoCal928 (seller) 11 months, 3 weeksago

@gdl203 - I do not since i don't have a lift and i really can't get a very good shot on the floor.

  • SoCal928 (seller) 11 months, 3 weeksago

@JohnBlackyoldtimer - thanks for your patience. I just returned home. Yes the speedo is 85 mph. That was right after the 55 speed limit was lifted so i presume the automakers saw it as a stretch....The engine is a fuel-injected 4.5-liter V8.

  • JohnBlackyoldtimer (registered bidder) 11 months, 3 weeksago

Very nice contemporary witness. I saw the speedometer and don't understand the speed information. Why is 85 MPH listed as the maximum speed? Comparable 928 from the 1980s show at least 100 MPH? Is the display correct and what kind of engine is in the vehicle?

  • tompinky (registered bidder) 11 months, 3 weeksago

@GrandNatty My 1979 with same engine was Not an interference engine. My current 1986 Euro S is, as is my 1990 S4.

  • GrandNatty (registered bidder) 11 months, 3 weeksago

@SoCal928 - no worries on wheels, 10+ years on a belt, please don't drive it! For your sake. Interference engine, not good if the belt goes.

@Pcarliebhaber - thanks, a lot of good history. When i was cleaning it out she had a parking permit for the 1984 World Cup soccer that she needed since she lives above the Rose Bowl.

Hi Rebecca, i hope the descriptions and videos answer your questions. The car drives very nice. as for oil leaks, it was sitting in my garage for 8 days and when i backed it out there was one drop about the size of a dime. No funny noises, shifts smooth, AC was working in the summer per Kathy but i have not turned it on since i have had it in my garage. All gauges work perfect and no warning lights/check engine.

  • Pcarliebhaber (registered bidder) 11 months, 3 weeksago

  • GrandNatty (registered bidder) 11 months, 4 weeksago

@socal928 - do you have the phone dial wheels? My recollection was 1980 was still phone dials, not manholes?

  • SoCal928 (seller) 12 monthsago

Update, sorry i just went to the car and that is a small dent on the lower rear panel by the reflector.

  • SoCal928 (seller) 12 monthsago

    @Porshaah - this is a reserve auction
@vivajosue - no dent in the rear panel, must have been the lighting, also i put service info in the ad above (belt, etc), I do have many of the service records and the mechanic will email everything on record to the new owner.
thank you for the questions, Dale

  • tracing 12 monthsago

    No cracks on the dash?

  • SoCal928 (seller) 12 monthsago

I just want to thank PCarmarket for welcoming us the site. I will gladly try to answer any questions that are posted. Happy Bidding and Merry Christmas!

  • SoCal928 (seller) 12 monthsago

@needanothercar . Hello and thanks for asking. Kathy stated the dash lights have not worked properly for a while. I took it to a Porsche specialist to check and he stated that it would require a more in depth disassembly to find the open circuit. They traced power all the way up to the switch, back of the dash panel and dimmer. I told them to only go so far and not do any extensive work since the dash is so solid.

  • needanothercar (registered bidder) 12 monthsago

"except the dashboard lights" have you had the car in for service regarding the light outage?
