Offered for auction is this 1980 Porsche 928 finished in Grand Prix White over a black leather interior.  A luxury high-speed grand touring car, this 928 features a 4.5L V8 engine driving the rear wheels by way of a 3-speed automatic transaxle.  It was acquired by the seller in May of 2020 and has since undergone considerable service including timing belt and water pump replacements.  Showing just over 40k miles on the odometer, this Porsche 928 is now being offered for auction out of Arizona.

The exterior comes finished in Grand Prix White with aluminum window trim, a front chin spoiler, pop-up headlights, and an aftermarket dual exhaust outlet. The factory 16” Phone Dial wheels are fitted with colored Porsche crests and Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires from 2019.  An uninstalled rear spoiler will accompany the sale and some minor cosmetic imperfections are depicted in the inner rear hatch. Detailed images can be found in the gallery.

The black leather interior includes matching carpets, headliner, and power-adjustable front seats.  Other equipment includes air-conditioning, power windows, cruise control, and an aftermarket Pioneer head unit.  The heat is currently inoperable and the climate control unit is stuck on the cold setting.  Some signs of wear are also depicted on the front seating surfaces.

The naturally aspirated and fuel-injected 4.5-liter V8 engine produces as much as 231 HP and 265 lb.-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a 3-speed automatic transaxle.  Since acquiring the car in 2020, the seller had a timing belt and water pump replacement carried out along with the installation of new fuel injectors, a fuel pump, fuel filter, distributor cap/rotor, ignition coils, wires, spark plugs, battery, airbox straps, air intake hoses, air filter, and hood insulation pad.  The radiator and coolant expansion tank have been upgraded with aftermarket aluminum pieces and the transaxle is said to have been rebuilt in October 2020 followed by the replacement of the torque converter in February of 2021.

This sale will include a clean title.

@uscarrera Everything on the car works. The fuel level is just very low in the videos,

  • uscarrera (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Does fuel gauge work? It seems on empty in the videos
    Thanks

@Neugie On BaT it usually doesn't start until the last 10 minutes; but yes, would be nice to sell this week.

If it doesn't go here, it will sell eventually elsewhere for a higher price to the right buyer, but maybe someone here will end up getting a good deal if it bids up near the reserve.

Thanks for the quick update. I hope for your sake not mine that the bidding picks up.

@Neugie There is no Carfax available with these old format VINs. It's only 10 digits, not the standard 17. If you know of a way for me to do it, I will. Just let me know. I was only able to check it on NICB, which tells me it was never stolen or totaled.

Anyway, I really doubt this vehicle was ever in an accident. I've gone over every inch of this 928 many times, every body panel matches up perfectly, and the paint is all original everywhere. All of the mechanical parts in front and back are original too, except for the radiator, which was replaced by me to increase thermal performance.

If this 928 was ever in an accident, they did amazing work; but likely it never was. It looks too clean.

Are you aware of your car being involved in any accidents reported to CarFax or unreported damage events?

  • Neugie (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

It’s time for us to start bidding on this car. Please make a CarFax available?

@nowvoyager Thank you for your praise!

Hope you decide to get in on the action.

Wow. Love the videos of the windows. May seem silly, but that really makes a difference when you consider the overall affection for this vehicle. All the videos are great. The minimalism is what makes these cars so desirable to me personally. Good luck on finding the best price and best home for this work of art. Hope I'm a bidder, but if I'm not, I'd like you to know I should have been. Nice - nice car.

@Neugie I would be confident driving it cross country as everything thing in this car has been gone over and checked; replaced or upgraded if necessary. I even replaced all the fuel and ignition components just for good measure. There's even new tires and a battery too. Trailering it may protect the paint though, a lot can happen in 40+ interstate hours with a low car, but that's up to you.

The heater does technically work, it's just the head unit control. I had the whole system gone over by a 928 specialist, it's all clear and works great; but the climate control head unit has a malfunction. If you were to install a new/rebuilt one it would work fine. They are readily available for about $400 from multiple suppliers online; 928 International has it.

There is no rust on the vehicle; Arizona cars typically don't have them. The underside of the vehicle is pictured front and back; it's clean. Engine bay, wheel wells; clean. As for the holes in the hatch, they are there for the installation of an optional spoiler, and there is no rust there either. It would seem that the PO installed/removed the spoiler in an unprofessional way. I just took clearer photos of the area and will have one of the moderators upload them along with invoices; you will be able to see it's just bare metal, and that one of the holes is just a little dirty. Anyway, I think these areas could be filled and touched up with Grand Prix White paint for not a lot of money and one would never know there was ever a spoiler on this vehicle, or the spoiler could be re-attached if that is what the new owner likes.

There are no rips or tears in the upholstery; there is only a less than one inch separation along one of the seams on the driver seat where re-stitching should take place anyway. The rest of the interior -- with the exception of the buckets of the front seats -- is excellent. Look at photos #46 and #52 in the gallery and zoom in; those areas are the only problem areas. There are many upholsters that you could take the bottoms of the front seats to and have them re-stuffed and re-stitched inexpensively. Once that is done I'd recondition the leather on the all of the front seats and you'd be left with full looking seats that have a vintage patina; some people really want that, some don't. You could also have the front seats entirely re-upholstered for a new look, but some people really don't like that. Personally I'd go the re-stuff, re-stitch, re-condition route; I feel like it would look pretty cool and original after that.

Any rips tears or separation in the upholstery? Any other rust on/under the 928?

  • Neugie (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Also when possible, photos of individual work receipts so they are able to be read? Thanks.

  • Neugie (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

If you lived on the other side of the country, would you as a new buyer trailer it home or be confident in driving it to it’s new home? Is the heater malfunction an electrical problem (switch, etc.) or a heater box, fluid flow, etc. problem? What is your guess about the rusted holes and please a photo of the opposing side? Thanks.

Hey guys, let me know if you have any detailed questions I can answer, or if you would like me to take any specific photos or videos of anything that's not already here.

This is a truly special example of an early 928 that is original and minimalist. It's finely tuned and extremely fun to drive, and so enjoyable to just stare at it. I hope whoever ends up with it will enjoy it as much as I have.

Good luck to all the potential bidders!
