Originally purchased by a U.S. Air Force serviceman in Germany, this 1980 Porsche 911SC Targa was imported to Colorado in 1985. It was later relocated to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, where it remained until the fourth and current owner acquired it in 2019 and brought it to California. Finished in Silver Metallic over black leather upholstery, it is powered by a 3.0-liter flat-six engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. Boasting a removable roof panel for open-air driving, this 911SC is now being offered for auction out of California with approximately 172k miles on the odometer.

Finished in Silver Metallic with a removable black roof panel, this 911SC features an overhead Targa bar and a heated wraparound rear glass window. Equipment includes rectangular fog lights, dual side mirrors, a rear window wiper, rear bumperettes, and 16” Fuchs wheels wrapped in Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus tires. The seller notes minor rock chips on the front bumper and side mirrors, with areas of paint touch-up throughout. The hood has been stripped to bare metal and refinished to address rock chips, and the rear valance was previously modified to accommodate a larger exhaust tip. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin is trimmed in black leather upholstery, complete with a color-coordinated dashboard, center console, door panels, rear seats, and carpeting. The driver is supplied with a black leather-wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel, VDO instrumentation, climate controls, power windows, and a Clarion CD stereo. All gauges and accessories are confirmed to be in proper working order.

Powered is derived from an air-cooled 3.0-liter flat-six engine upgraded with BitzRacing electronic fuel injection, 9.5:1 high-compression pistons, 964-grind camshafts. As much as 180 HP and 175 lb.-ft of torque stock to the rear wheels through a 5-speed 915 manual gearbox. The seller states the engine was rebuilt in 2017, and the transmission was rebuilt in 2019. Additional upgrades include Dansk SSI heat exchangers and an upgraded muffler.

This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, and service records.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for taking a look at this 1980 911sc Targa. I've loved this car from the moment I saw it, and I know the next owner will as well. Since purchasing in 2019, the car has remained garaged and all service is up to date. This car has 9.5:1 high compression pistons, 964 grind cams, a Bitz racing EFI, and Dansk heat exchangers and muffler. Definitely a strong pulling example of the 911sc with lots of pep.”

I have no skin in the game here, I just want to add my experience working with BaT.
I sold a vintage BMW on BaT in the past and there was an interesting gap in the process between acceptance of the reserve and write-up and go-live. The lead-up process took a very long time and the last communication I had with BaT they provided a window for go-live & it seemed like there would be another heads-up a few days before or at least the day of on actual go-live. Suddenly my listing was live and I was not fully-prepared and it seemed to come out of nowhere. That said, I was ok with the reserve and had I not been, I would have assumed any sort of communication with BaT about a discrepancy in the reserve would be handled appropriately.

I have no idea what happened here and I am sure judging by the images of this 80 911, it's a great car... The moral of my story is to illustrate I can see a potential miscommunication happening if a Seller sets up a listing many weeks or months in advance and then if something changes during that time, the listing go-live could have old information which was agreed upon but is now out-dated. I don't know if that's the case here but I can see it's a possibility and I would hope all parties would try to do the right thing.

Good luck to the seller, potential buyers and here's to everyone being kind to one another!

When BaT bans someone from their site, the also don't allow them to post. So when BaT continues to litigate the issue on their listing without the ability of the aggrieved party to participate, it's not a fair process. I can ALSO say from experience that they're not truthful in their summaries of events when they ban users. Quite frankly, nothing in BaT's reply on the 28th conflicts with the seller's account, but the seller has no access to participate in the discussion there. It's honestly going to catch up to BaT at some point.

Jumping back in here in the BaT topic. I only met the seller when I went to see the car, so I have no "relationship" other than he was certainly a stand-up, knowledgeable guy and through our conversation after the auction's end, I got the story below. As an active BaT member (@JimmoVette), it's my opinion that it was an unfortunate misunderstanding and if I were in the seller's shoes I'd maintain the same position since they did not set the appropriate reserve.

Bidders here should bid with confidence and not let the BaT snafu ruin an otherwise great opportunity to own a well-sorted car with a couple of nice upgrades, a solid provenance, and great performance.

  • Kevinmr (registered bidder) 1 monthago

@seller I apologized below for calling you that. As you probably know, you can't edit a post on BaT after a few minutes or so, or after someone posts after you. Sorry to derail this - but BaT sure defamed you if below is correct. Anyway, GLWA here.

  • bhaydel3 (seller) 1 monthago

@Kevinmr you called me a scumbag, so I doubt you are a bidder. In any event, the facts are as follows: Feb 2024, I submitted the car to BaT and they presented a reserve which I said was fine. January 2025, a full year later, I was ready to sell and told them the reserve price it needed to be in order to move forward. They didn’t place the reserve as I asked for and went live anyway.

Again, I’m happy to post the texts with the high bidder, but my goal isn’t to shame people on the internet.

Call www.dcat.com to ship when sold

  • Kevinmr (registered bidder) 1 monthago

@seller any comment about BaT's comment (yesterday - Feb 28) in the BaT listing?

You are banned from BaT? I guess just a misunderstanding for 7 days about the reserve?

  • bhaydel3 (seller) 1 monthago

@CARS458 I’ll ask the PCAR admin to make that adjustment.

  • CARS458 (registered bidder) 1 monthago

@bhaydel3 Sorry. But sure If already been asked but the second video on YouTube is tagged as private can you change that so the link works

  • bhaydel3 (seller) 1 monthago

@Colwyn555 Apologies for the delay, yes, that is correct.

  • Colwyn555 (registered bidder) 1 monthago

@Bruce914 . I'm asking the seller to confirm it will pas CA smog once the appropriate emissions parts are installed once again.

  • Colwyn555 (registered bidder) 1 monthago

to be clear, once the CAT and exhaust systems are replaced, this Targa will pass California emissions...?

    Please confirm

  • bhaydel3 (seller) 1 monthago

@Bruce914 In its current configuration, it will not pass smog as it has no cat installed. It can be delivered with a Cat and factory exhaust in lieu of the Dansk system.

  • Bruce914 (registered bidder) 1 monthago

Nice looking. Had an 80 SC targa - fun cars. I see it has out of state plates, will it pass California smog?

  • bhaydel3 (seller) 1 monthago

@Bverhoef I can't speak to what you were told, but the $429 is back in my account.

  • Bverhoef (registered bidder) 1 monthago

@bhaydel3 the only truthful part of your comment is that the buyer’s (ie me) fee was refunded. BaT was clear your seller’s fee would not be refunded and you would be banned from the site.

  • bhaydel3 (seller) 1 monthago

@Kevinmr Didn't make sense to me either, but PM me and I'd be more than happy to provide you all the receipts. Still time to edit that post btw.

  • JimmoCar (registered bidder) 1 monthago

I had the chance to meet @bhaydel and drive the car when it was on BaT. I’m a 911 newbie, but I do have a couple of classic cars including a recently acquired 914.

I did bring a friend who lives nearby and is a complete gearhead — worked on race teams, has rebuilt several classic cars — and she also owned an ’83 SC targa so she has a better frame of reference. The car idles great, pulls extremely strong and steers and brakes straight and true. Clutch took a little getting used to, but every car is different. Paint is a solid 8 out of 10 and the interior is in great shape (minus an apparently faulty reclining handle on the passenger seat).

My friend noted that it definitely performed better than her ’83. After the drive we learned that the top-end rebuild included the switch from MFI to EFI, the high-compression pistons and the upgraded cam and she said “Well, that explains it!”

Equally important, Brian the owner is a great guy, knowledgeable about Porsches (inspired by his dad’s ownership), and he shared the huge library of maintenance receipts that comes with the car. When you’re buying a classic car (especially sight-unseen) you’re also buying into the seller and I could tell that Brian is a straight-shooter and struck me as a trustworthy individual who has taken good care of this car and is representing it accurately. The mixup on the reserve was unfortunate, but the fact that BaT refunded both parties tells the story. Great car here with excellent upgrades and I hope it finds a new home.

  • Kevinmr (registered bidder) 1 monthago

OK, sorry I regret my post. But still, to run an auction the full term at BaT with the wrong reserve seems off. But good luck here.

  • bhaydel3 (seller) 1 monthago

@robdsaunders I've seen them, but I prefer to stay out of the name-calling (looking at you @Kevinmr). Also, any post detailing that BaT made a mistake is taken down.

  • robdsaunders (registered bidder) 1 monthago

@bhaydel3 Might want to post something to that effect on BAT as there's a couple of negative comments about it...

  • bhaydel3 (seller) 1 monthago

@robdsaunders That wasn't an option unfortunately. BaT refunded my listing fee as well as the high bidders buyers fee.

  • robdsaunders (registered bidder) 1 monthago

Why not just pull the car before the auction ended?

  • bhaydel3 (seller) 1 monthago

@Kevinmr Hi Kevin, I’m glad you asked. BaT set the reserve incorrectly. I spent 2 weeks trying to work it out with them and the high bidder to no avail.

  • Kevinmr (registered bidder) 1 monthago

You didn't follow through on the sale at BaT and now hoping to sell it here? Bad karma.
